Tomb Raider on PS3

But not for a while.

Lara Croft will make her way to PlayStation 3 eventually, but you shouldn't expect to wrap your thumbs around her until July 2007 at the earliest.

Tucked away in Eidos' financial results for the year ended June 2006 was a note that it's planning "new versions of Tomb Raider (including a PS3 version)" for release in as part of its 2008 financial year line-up.

That's because the company's hedging its next-gen bets, and hasn't planned any PS3 releases between now and June 2007.

"This is consistent with our policy to launch titles on a new platform when the platform reaches a commercially viable installed base," it said.

Eidos has been a fairly strong supporter of the rival Xbox 360, with Hitman: Blood Money, Tomb Raider: Legend and Just Cause most recently.

I liked the new one until I got stuck due to a bug and it went to eBay next day.

I wish they would get rid of stupid boss fights and focus on platforming and puzzles.

I LOVED the new Tomb Raider. Seriously, LOVED. Everything about it. The unique storyline (in gaming terms), the art style, the fluidity of Lara's movements, everything. If it had only been double in size, it would have gone down as one of my favourite Xbox games ever. They better have a sequel on the Xbox 360!
  • Mr_Whacker #3 5 years ago

I also loved it while it lasted but the size really left a bitter taste after finishing it.

I thought the whole family thing was great. And the legend of King Arthur. how many other games can you say have employed such premises? It's always sci-far wars, WWII, cyborgs, gangsters, etc. I played TRL before finishing Jade Empire, and say what you like about both, I found them to be unique in their styling, and something different from the norm.

TRL was great - could've done with 2 more levels would've made it perfect in length I'd say..
Next instalment should be good :)

TRL was alot better than the last ..dunno five games. It was alittle short and easy. I also think the story was alittle shallow. But overall a good game.

I can't say I loved the shooting sections, or the bike-riding, or the boss fights. The rest was decent while it lasted.

Nice as Tomb Raider Legend undoubtedly was on the 360, it was still a little disappointing in terms of size and those vehicle levels were utterly, utterly awful. More exploring tombs and less of the James Bond stuff in the next game please.
  • MasterThief #9 5 years ago

The tomb bits were my favoruite, yeah. But am I the only one that enjoyed those bike sections? I thought they were exhilirating, myself. The shooting bits were definitely naff though. Although, with better mechanics, I would have enjoyed them as well. Overall, I thought Tomb Raider legend was better than all the three PoP games.By far.

played it on PC. The bike sections reminded me of some tacked on crap from the old cinemaware games (mini games disguised). The sky scraper gameplay was fairly edgy/tense and decent. The boss battles were a chore, annoying and very old-hat (the one guy who kept repeating the same phrase over and over with seemingly no mind of his own finally put the nail in the coffin). The gfx were nice enough (the manor house especially) but it was all "By the numbers" Tomb Raider to me.

Nothing can beat that feeling I had playing the original on the PS1 way back. They need to basically return to that completely and put proper exploring, puzzles and relevent locations back in. Basically like TR1 but done properly with modern GFX and controls.

Im still waiting on the promised cube version :-)

What happened to the 10th Anniversary TR1 remake?
  • tenma #13 5 years ago

I wish they'd just let the series die already and invest some of those resources spent constantly trying to rehash / reinvent the formula on something truly unique and noteworthy.

I'm surprised Tomb Raider is still relevant these days. The entire theme and presentation seems antiquated as fuck.
  • Machetazo #14 5 years ago

@Bassassin: It's still on, afaik...Just not much has been said about it since the whole Core/Crystal Dynamics as developer thing.

""new versions of Tomb Raider (including a PS3 version)" for release in as part of its 2008 financial year line-up."

I wondered when the story would continue, but was almost afraid to inquire, as I felt it best that the team have all the time they need, sans hype, to put out a first class follow-up to the new Tomb Raider, that's shown when it's ready.

Legend was great fun, with some great design choices evident.
Certain things, like the Bike chases - awkward - and boss sequences, though, didn't work as well, but I'm happy to put these misteps down to the devs being new to TR, and trying new elements out.
Overall though, a good game. :)

The bottom line is that TR Legend sold very well, it was by far the best-selling game from Eidos, it sold twice as much as the next best-selling, Hitman. It also got much better reviews than TR AOD and many reviewers including EG said it had brought the series back from the brink.

With success like that, what are they meant to do, abandon the series just because it's been around for 10 years?

Do you think publishers should abandon the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy series because they've been around for 20 years?

New TR was good in some sections and not so good in other section. But it's one of the few games I've actually completed, but I have a feeling that's because of the lack of length, and challenge even.

But it felt more like Prince of Persia than Tomb Raider to me. They need to bring back the atmosphere and slow pace of the first games. In the new game, you just jumped from level to level, and never had the chance to really soak in the atmosphere, unless you just stopped and looked. It didn't feel like and adventure game anymore.

Loved TR:Legend more than any game since the first, I think. Agreed that they should ditch the bike riding and especially the "interactive cinema" parts though, and focus more on exploring big, beautiful environments and solving physical puzzles.
  • BartonFink #18 5 years ago

Yea would agree with the general sentiment here TR:L was a good game but the bike bits could have been left out and some of the boss battles could have too in favour of more puzzle solving. Good game though.
  • Bates #19 5 years ago

Tomb Raider has been bollocks since the third game. Everything since has been progressively worse.

A series that sorely needs to die if I ever saw one.
  • BartonFink #20 5 years ago

Did you actually play the last one?
The first one was great and everything up to TR:L has been pretty meh!!

Yeah, I did as it happens Dink, it was half finished, with awful controls and some of the worst combat around in a game. Games like Prince of Persia have long since but outdated rubbish like this out to pasture.
  • Ihya #22 5 years ago

I have sworn at many games for having shitty controls, but Legend 'aint one of them...

"Do you think publishers should abandon the Metal Gear and Final Fantasy series because they've been around for 20 years?"

At least with the MGS series, Kojima finds ways to innovate each and every time and make each new experience feel like a unique one. And at least with FF, each new sequel has a completely different world, different characters, and somewhat different goal. From what I played of the last TR, the only reason it seemed awesome was because it was the first *decent* one in how many years?
