Rainbow Six: Lockdown demo

Fight for/against terrorism today!

Ubisoft's released a PC demo of Rainbow Six Lockdown, allowing you to fight some terrorism before it all gets out of hand and in the shops. The PC version is out in early February, and this 497MB demo lets you play a South African single-player mission.

Also, for those of you who want to fight as some terrorism, presumably, there's a multiplayer Prison map, which can be played in brilliantly named "Team Adversarial" mode. As for the single-player, that's a campaign mission available in two difficulty settings.

Ubisoft also sent over some other stats about the demo. It's got 17 out of the game's 42 weapons (though, er, quite what they are...) and all the equipment and grenades, plus, on the multiplayer side, you can use the Custom Character Creation majig.

It also sounds like it'll work on PCs that you've had from a while, since the minimum specs are a P4 1.5GHz (or AMD equivalent), 512MB RAM and a 64MB DirectX 9-compatible graphics card.

So that's nice. It's on Eurofiles now, and you can read what we made of the Xbox version, which is already out, somewhere else in the world of links.

Seriously, anyone want to leave some constructive feedback on it? I'll be trying it out when I get back this evening.

Real shame, Raven Shield Multiplayer was absolutely fantastic and to date remains for me one of my lifetime gaming highlights

+1, though Rogue Spear singleplayer was excellent for its time.

I probably spent over 1000hours playing rvs co-op over 8months, it was addictive, fun and fulfilling in a way CS/etc never was.

How good were the Hijack map and the one in Yugoslavia in the rain on Rogue Spear?

Probably my fave ever FPS levels.

I can't find half-decent download speed anywhere. Eurofiles is only going at something like 10k/s max :/
  • bunglebonce #13 6 years ago

Yeah, I absolutely *loved* that Kosovo level. I kept on being taken down by the sniper in the tower before I knew where it was. I don't think I've seen a level in the genre where counter-sniping works as well as in that.

Try www.clubic.fr ... it's a french website but their servers are pretty good. I was getting around 70 - 80 kb/s although you have to register I'm afraid.

It's not an awful game, but it has removed most of the interesting things about the rainbow 6 franchise.

In this incarnation it's simply a bland first-person shooter.

I get the impression that the PC developers are caught between publisher expectations ( a mainstream, simplistic action title ) and expectations of the people who might like to play this game ( a fun, involved, tactical shooter ).

I have yet to hear much in the way of praise for this game, which is a shame. I wonder if it will get published regardless, or whether the advice of those who have played the demo will be taken to heart and a game more true to the ethos of Ravenshield may eventuate?

Can only hope Bitkari, but posters on the official forum have been complaining since the first details came out over a year ago - that it was being turned into CS with slight changes.

    XB R63: Ace
    PC R63: Ace
    XB R64: Shit

Any improvements over the rubbish AI, graphics and gameplay at all in the PC game?
  • bunglebonce #18 6 years ago

So I played it, and it wasn't good...

    Nice engine, animation etc.

Shocking gameplay. First time round the team AI made an attempt to use close quarter tactics, but made a formation in the most awkward and inconvient positions. So second time round I just shot the other three and played it as Chavez. It plays just like a (mediocre) generic FPS; there is no scope for tactics anymore.

In some respects, there are imrovements from RvS. But they've changed the fundamentals of the game in such an obtuse manner that it's nearly unrecognisable to previous Rainbow Six games.

Needless to say a prompt uninstallation followed.
  • Furbs #19 6 years ago

We wont say we told you so. :p

But yeah, that sniper was a bitch, and the guys in the church at the end of the level if your flashbang throw wasnt good enough.

    Not fundamentally, no.

The engine's probably better, it's definately more optimised for mid-low range PCs than RvS was. You can shoot through car windows, but ironically you can't blow open a fire extinguisher anymore.

The AI isn't improved. If anything it's worse. And to top it off, Red Storm have completely lifted the terrorist soundbites, Alaaarm! etc in the awful Russian accents. Which in one sense improves the game because it's the funniest dialogue I've heard since the first Tenchu, but in another sense shows some cheap decision-making by the developer.
