Consolevania gets movie rights News

Doom, BloodRayne, Silent Hill... Big screen game adaptations are big news these days, even if they are almost all completely rubbish.

Now it seems that the people behind Consolevania, the online games show which spawned BBC series videoGaiden, have acquired some movie rights of their very own.

Yes, next month, pre-production will begin on Hover Bovver: The Movie. Hover Bovver, for those of you who don't even know what cassettes are, was the work of loveable old hippy Jeff Minter (he's also the man behind Neon, the Xbox 360's crazy light synth thing).

The game, which was released in 1983 on Commodore 64, saw you playing as a bloke called Gordon Bennet who nicked a lawnmower off his neighbour. Your mission was to mow 16 lawns before the neighbour caught up with you, or before the screen went all blue and yellow and you had to rewind the tape and start again.

"We're delighted to have finally secured the rights to this property," said Consolevania's Robert Florence.

"It has always been a dream of mine to bring that loveable lawnmower-stealing rogue Gordon Bennet to the big screen, and I relish the challenge ahead."

Can't wait. In the meantime, why not check out the new "adults only" episode of Consolevania over at Consolevania.com. No, not as funny as the Batman review, but then what is.

Bloody Neon. Xbox 360 needs its own version of nVidia's blobby dancer (free 20MB tech demo download from nZone site!) and maybe they could relegate the Neon pants to being the funky background.

Hover Bovver! I bloody loved Hover Bovver! Me and my mate played it all the time! A mowing game?! Genius! That and 'Bozzos Night Out', a game about walking home from the pub blind drunk, and 'Paradroid', a game about... who knows, but it had a great minigame for taking over robots! C64, a classic machine!

It's the first review in episode 2.1 IIRC and is, indeed, hilarious.

How do you pronounce Hover Bovver? When I played it as a kid I used to say "Hower Bower" but now in my later years I have realized that was all wrong. Help me

Hover Bovver is pronounced as it looks: Hov-er Bov-er, phonetically (the second word's first syllable being the same as that in "Bovril"). I suspect Jeff living in an area with plenty of Estuary English speakers probably helped coin that particular title.

As for this article, if it's not an April Fool then that's a very bizarre thing indeed.

Laughing my arse off at the pronunciation controversy! :D

Hover as in hover mower? Flymo? *rolls eyes*

Bovver as in bother? Remember, in the 80s? We said it all the time?

Or was that just in South Bucks? o_O

Still can't believe this story though.
