New 3D PGR3 screenshot

Insert 360 pun here.

A 3D screenshot from forthcoming Xbox 360 title Project Gotham Racing 3 is now available for download.

It depicts a nice orange McLaren F1 LM, parked outside the Tokyo Metropolitan Government No 1 Building. "Pay particular attention to the reflection of the building on the car body," reads Bizarre Creations' latest online update, "And also the beautiful shimmer of the sun hitting the roof at certain angles." All right then.

PGR3 is down as an Xbox 360 launch title, but recent rumours have suggested we might be in for a bit of a wait.

Not if Bizarre has anything to do with it, though - apparently they're all working stupid amounts of overtime in a bid to get the game finished. Fingers crossed...

It's a bit blurry around the back, has it been photoshopped?
  • phAge #2 7 years ago

Nope - its an ingame effect.

"Motion blur" means that things in the distance are blurred, whilst the stationary car is kept in focus. Also, we make use of a technique called "depth of field". If you pause the animation and rotate to certain angles, you'll see parts of the car are blurred if they are nearer or further away from the camera. This is because the lens is actually focused at the middle of the image, and other things become "out of focus", just like in real-life. These are two really nice effects which we haven't been able to use before, but due to the awesome power of the next generation of hardware we can now implement them in our games.

Presumably only in replays though? you dont want depth of field or motion blur on a background in-game...
  • phAge #5 7 years ago

    Err... Yes...

EDIT: Also, you're wrong: the Koenigsegg CCR 2005 is faster than the creaking McLaren.

    is this 640x480?

    doesn't look good to me??
  • tonynibbles #8 7 years ago

Is anyone here severely unimpressed with this?

Not sure whether Im more unimpressed by the fact that its in Flash and not Quicktime VR.
  • phAge #9 7 years ago

I think it looks pretty damn nice.

Uh I dont mean to sound insulting but you people that say it doesnt look impressive need glasses, this shot is amazing! The shadows and lighting on the body of the car are really spectacular....if (and its a big IF) this can be pulled off with more than one car on the road , enviroments as big as they are showing in EDGE magazine, online play and (hopefully) damage models then this will be the best looking racer ever.....

The detail might be impressive, but the lighting still looks artificial to me, and the car looks like a toy car, not a real one. I don't know where that effect comes from, but I've seen this on most xbox games as well. On the other hand, some PS2 games, most of which were much less detailed than this or their xbox counterparts in all other respects, looked kinda more realistic to me, just because the lighting looked like the real thing. Yes, I know it can't possibly be a hardware feature, I was wondering myself what they were doing wrong on xbox (supposedly more powerful) that some people got right on PS2.
Oh, and isn't what they explain as motion blur actually also a part of depth of field effect? I mean, the background isn't really blurred because it is moving so fast, is it?
  • jellyhead #12 7 years ago

I understand motion blur guys! :)
Didn't attribute it to a depth-of-field effect though, cheers.

    >EDIT: Also, you're wrong: the Koenigsegg CCR 2005 is faster than the creaking McLaren.

Actually - you're both wrong. The Bugatti Veyron is the fastest production car in the world.

    And Gotham looks awesome.

The Veyron isn't in production, so ner. It does go faster than the Koenigsegg, but it isn't a "production car".
  • Nige #15 7 years ago

The Veyron is in production now... so err, it is. That's how it claims the production car record. It goes on sale next year.

    So nerrr back.

"It goes on sale next year".

By which time it will become fastest production car. If it doesn't tear itself to pieces like it did last time. Production car means a car you can buy. That is not the case with the Veyron - yet.
  • The-Bodybuilder #17 7 years ago

    Who didn't see this coming?

Every other websites and forum have found this pic amazing. But in typical of certain EG members, they always find everything unimpressive.
  • Nige #18 7 years ago

Well, the launch is this Saturday at the factory in France - and I'm told as a record it stands, because the car that set the speed is allegedly the first production model.

According to Guiness its still the Koenigsegg - but I'll admit that the Veyron is farther along than I expected. So, maybe by next week, eh? :)
  • moggsy #20 7 years ago

I agree with TILT - it looks like a toy car in a toy world. Yep it's high res and nice n shiny but it doesn't yet have that x-factor which makes you believe you're looking at photographs of a real car in a real environment. It's certainly a step forward though.
  • freedumb #21 7 years ago

Gran Turismo 4's car models look more realistic than this, much sharper and better lighting than this toy car. Then again Gotham's never been about realism, its probably supposed to look more like a game, with just a touch of semi realism.
  • phAge #22 7 years ago

So you're saying that Gran Tourismo 4 looks sharper than this 480x300 pixel VR image? Why I never...
