Relic talks up Dark Crusade

Dawn of War expands again.

Relic Entertainment's waking up the Necrons for a new Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War expansion called Dark Crusade - and throwing in the Tau Empire race too.

That brings the total number of playable races across Dawn of War and its expansions Winter Assault and Dark Crusade to seven. Winter Assault added The Imperial Guard to the Orks, Space Marines, Eldar and Chaos of the original DoW.

Dark Crusade promises a new single-player campaign centring on conquest of the "meta-map", which sounds very Kieron, along with a "greatly expanded" multiplayer component and a "completely unique" economy model for the Necrons, who've apparently been in stasis for 60 million years. Which is a long lie-in by anyone's standards.

Dark Crusade is due out this autumn, and will be on display during E3 next week.

Tyranids! Add the Tyranids you fools!

Nids were the obvious (and popular) choice, I'm really surprised they didn't use them. My suspicion is that they wanted to bring out the Tau now to coincide with the new range of models, and thought nids were too good to not have a seperate pack of their own. So they used lame-ass knackered old robots. ;)

Relic have said somewhere on their forums they won’t be doing a Tyranid expansion. Something to do with the game engine not doing the race justice or summet. I’ll see if I can find the post.

There is a fans mod in the works though which is looking quite good. Haven’t tried it myself.

The developers have stated that they didnt feel they could do the Tyranids justice using the DOW engine. Expect them in the COH-engine powered sequel.

Why the heck not? The engine copes well with chaos and everything else they've thrown at it!

Yeah, I don't really get that. Surely the close combat animations are a large part of what makes this game what it is? Tyranids would be gruesome!

I don’t really see what their problem is either. Anyway, this is a quote from the developers,

“The issue has nothing to do with money. This was a mutual decision on all fronts. The Dawn of War engine would not do the Tyranids the justice that they deserve. It certainly could be done, but not to the level of our own expectations.”
