New Terminator game coming

To coincide with next film.

It's been announced that a videogame tie-in for PC, consoles and mobiles is set to launch alongside the next Terminator film in 2009.

Like the movie it will be titled Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. The Halcyon Corporation, which owns the rights to the Terminator franchise, is forming a new division to develop the game.

"When you own the intellectual property and have the creative control, you can make sure you're publishing a top-tier videogame that will satisfy the needs of the marketplace," said acting CEO Peter Levin.

Apparently work started on the game several months ago and a member of the development team has been working alongside the production crew in Budapest, where the movie is being shot, since the start.

"We don't want the game to be the stepchild to the film," said Halcyon exec Derek Anderson. "They're of equal importance, and we want both to be of the same quality and be the same compelling experience."

And Terminator isn't the only tie-in they've got planned. Halcyon also has first-look rights to the works of Philip K. Dick, him what did Blade Runner, and plans to release games based on his books, beginning in 2010.

    Is Arnie in this one?

    'Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins'

    Worst name ever!

Plus the game is being developed for mobiles? Who cares!!!

I predict this game = shit
  • Fyzzu #3 4 years ago

I'm pretty sure they don't need to worry about the game and the film being of different qualities. I mean, it's not like Terminator 3 was any good, so I'm not going to be hugely surprised if these turn out to be dreadful.
  • Redeye #4 4 years ago

    "Is Arnie in this one?"

Doubt it, unless Skynet thinks that using killer cyborgs that look like musclebound granddads is a top idea. ;)

And as for either the game or the movie eventually being much cop, excuse me if I don't hold my breath. :p

Surely it can't get any worse than the Terminator 3 game

Like the world needs another Terminator film. I mean, how many bloody times to do need to go back in time to change the future?
  • bauhaus #9 4 years ago

Anyone remember Bethesda's Terminator game?? It was amazing, well ahead of its time
  • AcidSnake #10 4 years ago

Are they at least going to keep the same actors or are they shuffling them around again?

Apparently this one is the start of a new trilogy set in the future war against Skynet, so there won't be any time travel shenanigans. At one point Vin Diesel was being hotly tipped to star.

Feel free to make up your own punchline about Vin Diesel being hotly tipped.

Any movie license games actually any good? Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Terminator 2 the arcade game...that's about it I think...Spider man was ok.

From the director that made you sit through Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

    And some other pap.

  • Fyzzu #14 4 years ago

Which one, bauhaus? They did about five. The original The Terminator was fairly freeform and great. 2029 was dreadful, but SkyNET and Future Shock were good fun.
  • Latin #15 4 years ago

What a load of shite, why is hollywood butchering some of the greatest Sci-fi franchises in the world? Alien(s), Predator, The Matrix and now the Terminator.

Plus with no Arnie surely the movie is obsolete.
  • m0thr4 #16 4 years ago

Anyone remember Terminator on the Megadrive? It looked great, but only took about 30 minutes to complete!

    Big who cares!
They already tarnished a great movie franchise with the piece of crap T3. A 4th movie will just make all involved look like total jackasses.
"Oh let's just change everything we know about the Terminator canon. None of the fans will notice." Assholes...

You simply can't do a Terminator movie without Jim Cameron. Why McG!?!?! What the fcuk are those hopplehead c0cksuckers thinking about? If you can't get Cameron then at least get someone that actually has a decent resume.

And as for movie tie-in games, these never go well. The production time for a movie is far less then the development time for a good solid game. Movie tie-ins have always and will always be complete dog turds because of this.

Hopefully the Ghostbusters game will not suffer this fate. They've had 18 years to think up a good formula after all...

    Worst. Name. Ever.

Just call it 'Terminator 4: War of the Machines', or something.

Not expecting much from the game, either. Sadly, this franchise died for me when I saw the awful Terminator 3 :(
  • bauhaus #21 4 years ago

@Fyzzu - Skynet I think, it was amazing, vehicles the lot, huge stompy robots, used to cack it when faced by the actually terminators themselves! Level design was especially good I seem to remember
  • Olemak #22 4 years ago

This movie will have to suck, and the games too, it is a natural law. Especially as they are building atheir own studio to handle it; at least if they'd signed the rights to a decent developer something good could have come from it. Like Starbreeze's Riddick game.

A shame, really, as the franchise "lore" is pretty interesting; where the "hero" of the movie (a trilogy, no doubt), will have to battle the machines endlessly in order to send his best friend back in time to father himself et cetera et cetera... and at the same time almost go mad from all the time-traveling insanity - is he caught in some time-loop; where all the intelligent machines are a direct result of his own tampering with the time-space continuum? Is he mad?

There's room for an interesting character here, someone reared and trained since boyhood to become a warrior who saves mankind, no pressure, and who has ample prrof in his upbringing that this is actually true; the prophecy is not at all a myth. A pipe-bomb messiah building an army to rage against the machines...

Shit, the premise is actually pretty cool. Too bad the movies will suck; the way all these cold-heared hollywood sequel cash-ins invariably suck.

The only thing Terminator related I'm really looking forward to is The Sarah Connor Chronicles starting in January (well, assuming that damn Writers' Guild strike doesn't stretch on for a long time).
I saw the pilot a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it.
  • redlander #24 4 years ago

never mind that T4 rubbish, I wanna know what they are gunna do with Philip K. Dick's stuff
  • 3william56 #25 4 years ago

What they are going to do with PKD stuff is b*gger it up horribly. See Minority Report, Paycheck etc. for details. Blade Runner and maybe Total Recall were flukes.

'The Sarah Connor Chronicles starting in January'

    The what now?

Haven't they ruined the Terminator brand enough? o_O
  • bdgr #29 4 years ago

The Terminator brand has gone the route Robocop took...

Damn good idea, poorly implemented every single time (after the first 2 films).

If you want a good terminator story, you should hark back to the robocop vs terminator comic.

    If I recall correctly.....
Robocop turns out to be the prototype for the Terminators. The humans fighting the terminators come back to kill robocop, the terminators try to save him. Robo realises why the humans are trying to kill him and helps them kill the terminators that are trying to save him from the people he's helping to kill them.

    Or something!

Game titles really are getting worse. Eventually, they're just gonna devolve into a series of completely incoherent subtitles, that entirely engulfs the game box, documentation, and makes up half the filesize on your harddrive.
They're not far off, already, really, especially with Lord of the Rings: The War of the Ring: The Whatever whatever Whatever(I can't remember the final subtitle they put on the new one, and i don't really care to)
  • lemonfist #31 4 years ago

Just looked up the title on imdb. Who the fuck is McG?
  • JDub #32 4 years ago

McG's done a load of stuff, from Alias, to the OC and other (questionable) stuff...

Still don't know who he is though - Just that he keeps popping up.
  • Triggerhappytel #33 4 years ago

Oh shit, I missed the part that fucking McG was directing... I have horrible, horrible memories of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Not even Cameron Diaz in a bikini could save that film.

Terminator Salvation is a guaranteed train wreck of a movie.

Seems the 80s are back now with 1080p and really nasty cheese! :D

PS - I love 80s cheese to shreds!
  • hahayou #35 4 years ago

Well, a videogame version of Valis could be quite a laugh: jump around on platforms collecting tablets of digitalis for your suicide attempt whilst dodging information-rich beams of pink light. Play it in co-op and it turns out both of you were the same person all along. Activate your early Christian personality to play the fed-to-the-lions minigame.

  • J.C #36 4 years ago

1 who the fuck are The Halcyon Corporation?
    2 why another film?
    3 why another game?
    4 why?
    5........why?
  • Pulsar_t #37 4 years ago

Glad to see PKD fans on this board :)

Have you watched the coaster that is the pirate T3 DVD?
  • The-Bodybuilder #40 4 years ago

This new terminator film worries me.
My fav movie series, on one hand, they've done the right thing by starting a new story ark with the future war.
On the other, it doesn't inolve james cameron.
  • The-Bodybuilder #41 4 years ago

    And what's with the title?
With a title like that, you just know it's gonna be crap.

    WWWWHHHHHHYYYYYYYY???

Why turn my fav sci-fi series into a crappy b-movie? What a friggen injustice.
  • Charlie_Miso #42 4 years ago

    @ The Bodybuilder

    Term 1 WAS a crappy b-movie.

But the best crappy b-movie ever made.
