New Red Faction on the way

As THQ dates its line-up.

THQ has altered the dates of some of its key titles and officially announced the development of a new Red Faction game.

The words came from a recent financial call held by THQ boss Brian Farrell, which addressed recent money losses and brought several big names forward from 2008 into 2007.

Despite being down USD 9.3 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2008, Farrell was upbeat about the publisher's future, and demonstrated this by announcing a new Red Faction game for PC and consoles. No details were offered, or whether Volition will once again be the developer.

Chances are it may build on the ambitious-but-flawed Geo-Mod technology used in the game, where you could deform the terrain with your high powered weaponry - to a degree, at least. Perhaps THQ now has a game engine that can match the original vision?

Elsewhere, Farrel revealed that THQ has pulled gory hack-and-slasher Conan forward from early 2008. It will now be available on PS3 and X360 this holiday season – October to you and I.

Dirty racer MX vs. ATV Untamed was towed out of 2008, too, and will now appear on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS in December. Farrell was keen to add that it will make use of Nintendo's new steering wheel peripheral as well.

Last but not least was a solid date for dangerous racer Stuntman: Ignition for PS3, Xbox 360 and PS2, now due to appear on 28th August.

Unfortunately THQ was unavailable to comment on the date shifts, or whether they will be the same for Europe.

Conan this year eh? I'm actually quite looking forward to it, I just hope they get it right. Might be one to put off buying until the new year though, when things are a bit quieter.

The new footage from Comic Con actually looks really good apart from those really awful looking health icons that pop out of defeated enemies.

    "That conan game looks sick"

Looks sick???? why don't you go the whole hog and add "innit" to the end of any every sentence so you sound like a complete bell!

    Because "nobsack" sounds stupid.

I forgot the school holidays were on. Folk like fistfun wouldn't be posting at this time otherwise. Get off daddy's laptop sunshine.

The first Red Faction was shite to the nth degree. In fact, playing it was what led to me returning my first PS2 the day after I purchased it (I got a Dreamcast instead).

Red Faction 2 was one of those games, like Mace Griffin, that I knew was shit but have fond memories anyway.

Let's hope it's up to the standards of RF1, and we can finally cast the horrible, horrible memory of RF2 into oblivion.

Other than that, best news of the month so far :D

    Bring it!

And other phrases the proles like to use.

    Have it!

That's is also part of the vernacular, I believe.

    Get in!

    And suchlike.

    >"Looks sick???? why don't you go the whole hog and add "innit" to the end of any every sentence so you sound like a complete bell! "

Are you such a depressed nerd that you feel the need to act "big" on the net (like a twat) just because somebody uses the word "sick"?

I quite liked Red Faction... I just got annoyed when the Geo-Mod stopped working after a while in multi-player. And I never even contemplated getting 2, so maybe I didn't like it as much as I thought...
  • sanctusmortis #19 5 years ago

I think he means sick as in gory, so the whole willy wafting is pointless. And it does, too.

Red Faction 1 was a damn good try, but way too ambitious for that gen of machine. Will be interesting to see whether they can get the Geo Mod thing going properly through the awesome Power of Cell/360 blah. Thought the barrack attack with the white assault rifle was one of the best FPS sequences I've seen on a console.

RF2 was horrible though. Generic to the death.

Games brought forward? Into the whirlpool of death that is the Xmas season? I forsee a nasty lack of polish, followed by a swift descent to the bargain bins as the punters go for the real AAA titles, whilst grandma buys little Billy the latest licensed garbage. Bye Bye THQ - was fun.

What a great thread, almost instantly became a name flinging bun fight.

On subject, RF2 on Xbox was hopeless but I did play to the end and quite enjoyed it for the all the ropey AI and respawning baddies it was sort of fun. RF3 will need to bring much more to the table with Haze, Killzone2, Halo3 and Crysis on the horizon.

I loved the geomod thing in RF (only really good thing about it apart from the rail driver that shot through walls) but I heard it wasn't in RF2 at all (plus it was rubbish for many other reasons)...is that right? Me getting any more RF hinges entirely on the presence or absence of geomod.
