New PS3 firmware update News

PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

5 September, 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment has released a new and not very exciting firmware update for PlayStation 3.

Titled, not very excitingly, update 1.92, it became available for download yesterday. Sony didn't simultaneously release a list of what it actually does, but has since confirmed on the PlayStation blog: "Weve released a minor firmware update (version 1.92) for the PS3.

"This update focuses on some PS3 compatibility and playability issues for select titles."

They're not saying which titles. But they did state that "a search site for looking up compatible titles" is currently in development", so that's something.

This whole "1.92 firmware" affair has been very entertaining to follow... how some rumors on a forum became "news" som several gaming sites which mentioned many non existing features. Gee!

No harm, no foul really.
The UI seems a little quicker, the pad switches off and Warhawk lets me connect to more servers now.

@frombrosis: yup, DiRT seems to be a lot nicer on PS3 than 360.

These updates are getting a little bit tedious, don't you think? We Europeans have had at least five or six updates since the machine launched in March but this minor update doesn't seem to do anything different as far as I can tell - certainly my controllers don't auto-turn off as I was led to believe they would - and I've read loads of reports of people having problems getting online after installing it. Disappointing really, why don't Sony just stick to the major updates (v1.60, v1.70, v1.80, etc.) rather than releasing 120 MB patches to fix minor issues? Better still why not make these updates so they're incremental rather than requiring you download the entire thing?

@mcwildcard - Are you sure the controllers automatically shutdown because I deliberately left my PS3 on last night while I played BioShock on the 360 and my controller was still on after an hour. Not a very good power saving feature is it if it takes longer than an hour to turn them off? ;)

P.S. I couldn't see any power saving feature in the System settings either but then why should you have to enable something that should be on by default?

They 100% definitely turn off, it happened twice last night when I left the pad for a while. No idea how long though, don't think it was an hour though.
Maybe the pad has to be totally still, because when I picked up the 'off' pad, I swear the 'press PS button' message popped up on the screen, suggesting some sort of use of the motion sensor. The message might of been there all the time though, I wasn't really paying attention properly.

well if they did fix any compatibilities with older titles, they sure didn't do it to Ratchet and Clank 2. >:[

Which is the only game that's not fully working, and I was playing on that loads to before I got my PS3.

Hmmm, I didn't touch my PS3 controller but it was on my bed so maybe it detected my movement while I was playing on my 360 and that's why it didn't turn off? That said, it seems a bit stupid that slight movement will stop the controller turning off. I'll try it again tonight but I'll put the controller on a static surface away from me. I still can't believe that Sony would add a feature and then not state it was there... no-one else seems to have mentioned this auto shut-off feature post-update, I only read about it on NeoGAF but it seemed to be based more on rumours than fact.

Yeah mine has just switched itself off as we speak.

Might be using the motion sensing to detect if the controller is being used or not as well as button presses, nifty.

I just think it's stupid that the power button on the console doesn't switch it off

I left a game in my mate's PS3 and went to get it on my way out, and I had to switch the telly on to be able to switch the console off

KEEP TOUCHING the power button until it beeps and the LED turns from green to red? Even my cat learned how to do that.

Because I've tried keeping hold of it (as has my mate) and nothing happened

That's what I mean, just hold your finger on it for 3 or 4 seconds.

If that doesn't work, then your mate's PS3 is almost surely borked.

Some select PS3 games have compatability issues on the PS3?

Ratchet and Clank 2 has horrible slowdown... well that's my only issue i've come across, oh and FFVIII go into battle wipeout screen half of it goes blank but that's more cosmetic than anything.

I had problems getting online for a while after the update yesterday, it looked like something in the playstation network service was down as I could still use the web browser. Came back after half an hour or so.

It would be nice if Sony could put up a status page for the PSN on it's website.
