New PAL Releases Roundup

AVP! Winterbottom! Miles!

It's a happy day in the Eurogamer office when the frontpage strapline for New PAL Releases Roundup is spoiled for choice, and today is one such day.

We've singled out Aliens vs. Predator, The Misadventures of P. B. Winterbottom and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth for frontpage attention, but we might also have mentioned Resident Evil 5's excellent Lost in Nightmares expansion, PomPom's Alien Zombie Death or the unexpected and exciting prospect of Flight Control on DSiWare.

Winterbottom came out on Xbox Live Arcade on Wednesday and charmed us with its pastry-obsessed use of time-manipulation, while Lost in Nightmares is in some ways the game we hoped Resi 5 would be.

White Knight has been out in Japan for ages, so catch up on the changes in our recent International Edition hands-on and look out for a refreshed review next week. (Update: As a number of you spotted, White Knight is out on 26th February. Apologies for the error.)

Miles Edgeworth successfully extends the Ace Attorney series in typically bonkers fashion.

Then there's Flight Control, one of our favourite iPhone games ever, which emerges on DSiWare. Developer Firemint has made a name for itself with technically savvy, fearsomely playable handheld games recently, and while we haven't tried the DSi one yet it's tempting - although the iPhone version's £0.59 baseline is considerably less than the DSi's 500 Points asking price.

Alien Zombie Death, finally, is PomPom's first PSP mini. Check out video on Eurogamer TV and do read our interview with the affable Michael Michael about life as a shooty-loving indie.

Oh, and Peggle on PSN. God damn you Peggle.

    So... where's the AvP review?
  • bad09 #2 2 years ago

    EG..you now even Teletext got their AvP review up in time for the game. Just saying like.... ;)

    No AvP review makes Leona Lewis cry. You wouldn't want that. Would you?
  • CaptainQuint #3 2 years ago

    We won't be seeing the review until the massive advert on the main page expires. Eurogamer is really no different to the likes of Gamespot and IGN - they ain't got no balls and they've inevitably been exposed as sell outs.
  • Emmit_Assassin #4 2 years ago

    Er...review please?
  • Venatio Verified Expo Community & Gaming Manager, Eurogamer Network #5 2 years ago

    AvP review will be going up early this afternoon.
  • LiveForever #6 2 years ago

    "massive advert on the main page expires" ??

    Oh yeah addblocker.

    AVP is better than most reviews give it credit for. I have finished the game since i got it early from my game store last Friday. It is rather good. OXM UKs review was pretty good.
  • andywilkie35 #9 2 years ago

    Been playing the Miles Edgeworth game all week - I can confirm that it's great.
  • muscleblade #10 2 years ago

    The final game plays and looks much better than the awful demo.

    Ive heard White Knight is good. NOT.
  • Fodder #11 2 years ago

    Isn't Half Minute Hero out today too?
  • itsfuzzy #12 2 years ago

    No White Knight Chronicles review. Maybe for good reason.
    Just checked NowGamer and IGN reviews. Oh dear god.
    I actually feel like crying. Lost Odyssey was the last decent JRPG i played.
  • chrisno21 #13 2 years ago

    Some people put too much value in other peoples opinion and in arbitrary scores written at the end. I'm not expecting WKC to be great but no review will stop me buying it.
  • neems #14 2 years ago

    I think Rebellion own the licence (is it licence? Or license? I always forget which is which).
  • itsfuzzy #15 2 years ago

    @Chrisno21

    I hear you. But those web sites i mentioned are not affiliated in to each other in any way and are usually very fair.
    I thought this would be the best Level 5 game since Dark Chronicle. Guess i was wrong.
  • Paulie_P #16 2 years ago

    @chrisno21

    Reviews are pretty much a big part of this site. Does it not makes sense that I would like to hear an opinion of someone who has played a game before I buy it without any prior knowledge of it's quality?
  • Haloboy #17 2 years ago

    I predict a 7 for AVP.
  • Haloboy #18 2 years ago

    The only thing that did any harm was that many folk who downloaded the demo expected to be pwning alien, pred and marine faces right off the bat. And when they couldn't they called it dog shit and canned their preorders. If you don't put time and effort required into learning the classes properly you will never fully appreciate what AVP has to offer.
  • Darren #19 2 years ago

    It's a bit sad really when I see White Knight Chronicles in that list and feel absolutely no compulsion to buy it whatsoever. Three years ago I was itching to play it when I saw early W.I.P. footage from the Japanese version (which actually looks more impressive than the final release!) and it was actually one of the reasons I bought my PS3 back in March 2007. Just goes to show how much one can change in three years...
  • Machetazo #20 2 years ago

    Will there be a DW: Strikeforce review? I hope so.
  • muscleblade #21 2 years ago

    @neems

    Wrong. SEGA owns the license.

    Rebellion made AVP for SEGA.

    Gearbox is making Aliens: Colonial Marines for SEGA.
  • Doctor_What #22 2 years ago

    AVP seems to be the gaming equivalent of marmite. The reviews are swinging between 90%+ to around 55%. Every reviewer says something different too: 'The marine campaign is the best, the alien is boring and weak' and the next will say 'the marine campaign is bog standard and the alien campaign is immersive and suspenseful', and I've heard every species be accused of being immensely overpowered and unbalanced in multiplayer (and surely you can't have all three species be the best?!).

    I think the reivews are so mixed because it depends on what the reviewer wanted from the game. They might think the Predator campaign rocks and feel let down by the two others, then mark for an average of the three, rather than thinking of it as an overall package, and that seems to be where the worst reviews come from. The best ones seem to all say 'yeah, there're some weaker bits [although what those are change between reviewer's tastes] but overall it's a very generous package'. Then there are a few people who just seem grumpy.

    So, some people love it, some people hate it. Gaming marmite.

    Oh yuck... the DW Strike Force demo was utterly atrocious IMO... I wouldn't play the full game if someone gave it to me for free. Horrible camera angle, shimmery PS2-like graphics, decade old gameplay... felt like a relic from the last millennium to me.
  • muscleblade #24 2 years ago

    "I predict a 7 for AVP. "

    Thats the same score Dead Space got. Im guessing a 5 or 6. I dont agree with it. To me its a solid 8. The Marine campaign is a 9/10 actually. Scary shit indeed.

    I also like how Rebellon mixed the Aliens up with some Giger models, Cameron models and even a couple of Preatorians from the cartoon. Im a fan of the first Alien films and the forst Predator and the AVP cartoon (not the movies) so i liked this.
    If they based the AVP movie on the story used in the game it could have been great.
    Rebellion know the universe and the franchise well as opposed to WS Anderson and the Strauss brothers and made a great game from it.
  • Darren #25 2 years ago

    @Doctor_What - Make those AvP scores between 25% and 90% as 1Up.com absolutely detested the game and gave it a D (which is that lower score according to Metacritic). Granted, I didn't like the demo but I don't believe for one second that the game really is that bad.... mediocre perhaps?

    @Doctor_What:
    "AVP seems to be the gaming equivalent of marmite. The reviews are swinging between 90%+ to around 55%."

    Metacritic lists a single review at 90% from Playstation Official Magazine Australia.

    A shame, I was really looking forward to this... but putting an obtuse melee system in a fast paced FPS...???
  • Doctor_What #27 2 years ago

    I'd say it's around an 80% myself - you can subtract 5% if you don't like the films, you can add 5% if you love them. My housemate is a huge fan of the Aliens films so he loves it, others might not feel the same.
  • Haloboy #28 2 years ago

    I don't think I've seen reviews in such a roller-coaster format as they have been for AVP. It's actually quite something to behold. Still I'm personally thoroughly enjoying my survivor edition both online and off. And god do I hate marmite, yuk.
  • Doctor_What #29 2 years ago

    You're not kidding. I've been following this on AVPGalaxy, it's hilarious :)

    White Knight Chronicles is out next week, isnt it?
  • ducksmuggler #31 2 years ago

    Avp is awfull , picked it up this morning and now will be trading it in this afternoon .. DO NOT BUY THIS .... How much do you have to pay to get a game rated 8 ???
  • seanthejackal #32 2 years ago

    im only after clearing all alien vs predator campaigns...about 6 hours
  • muscleblade #33 2 years ago

    @ducksmuggler

    I loved it. More so than Bioshock 2 that i actually regret buying but need to finish as i cant stand having unfinished games on my gamertag.

    This is truly a hate/love game it seems. I think Rebellion really nailed it. Good job.
  • muscleblade #34 2 years ago

    "im only after clearing all alien vs predator campaigns...about 6 hours"

    Stop playing games on easy difficulty and the games lenght is no longer an issue.
  • greenllama88 #35 2 years ago

    looks like a good week, shame i've got no cash :(
  • spookyzombie #36 2 years ago

    White Knight Chronicles is out in the UK on the 26th of Feb and not today.
  • penhalion #37 2 years ago

    I thought white knight was out next week!
  • makeamazing #38 2 years ago

    Yes Heavy Rain is out next week... no wonder i am broke this month, what with STO, BS2, AvP and HR... but its ok, there nothing i want next month [gulp - lie]
  • FiZiE #39 2 years ago

    Heres your AvP review: Complete shite.
  • Haloboy #40 2 years ago

    Never seen so much uncalled for negativity concerning a new release as this. Ok let's see. It has a very competent marine based mission and I hear good things concerning both other campaigns also. MP is a blast with various fun modes that will soak up a lot of time once you get to grips with them properly. Graphics are solid. Performance is way up there even on a medium spec PC and it has fully captured the universe it was based on to boot.

    So unless you can determine how the game is such a waste of people's cash beyond the realms of just spouting out it's shite I strongly suggest you shush your mush.
  • penhalion #41 2 years ago

    @Haloboy

    The single player lasts about 10 hours in all I believe so that's like 3 hours per campaign or something dumb like that!
  • penhalion #42 2 years ago

    Does anyone check this list before it goes live?

    Seriously people some games on it are simply not out until next week. It's not even as if this is difficult to find knowledge!
  • DjanGOH #43 2 years ago

    According to play.com they are listing WKC as out now/in stock (which means we have but won't send it out any quicker). Everyone else has it out next week. Just because play has it in stock doesn't mean its officially out or that you'll get it much before next friday.

    Sorry about the WKC mistake - I'd been told 19th Feb and Play listed it as available, even though Amazon and GAME changed their minds.
