MS reveals Lips: I Love the '80s

Out in April. Amazing songs.

Another Lips game is being cranked out on 2nd April, this time in the shape of Lips: I Love the '80s.

And we do, because there are some absolute monsters in here. Duran Duran's "Rio", Erasure's "A Little Respect", Bowie's "Let's Dance", The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star". Hello! They do not come any bigger than this.

Try on Wilde's "Kids in America" or Spandau Ballet's PA melter "Gold", and then sound the siren and charge your glasses for "Roxanne".

All that's left is to "Relax" with the sound of Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Yes, that's "The Power of Love", sang Huey Lewis.

Lips: I Love The '80s will be compatible with all other Lips games and cost £34.99 bundled with a wireless microphone. The Solus release costs £24.99.

    I try to discover...

If only they would let you import all the songs from all these expansions into one single game that would be a pretty nice library. Shame that you have to swap discs.

That really is the best tracklisting of any single karaoke game I have ever seen.

Everyone a classic, with the exception of "You're The Inspiration", which I've never heard of (checks youtube)...

Edit: OMG THE CHEESE THE CHEESE. I'm sure I've heard that, I think I assumed it was the Bee Gees.

You're The Inspiration was in elite beat agents wasn't it? Total tear jerker with the dead dad's ghost IIRC.
  • reality_cheque #5 2 years ago

If I were to buy one of these games, it'd be this one.

Shame I've no interest in making myself look like a complete tool ;-)
  • Diogo_Ribeiro #6 2 years ago

    Madness \o/

    Human League :D

But... Jeebus Christ, Spandau Ballet? Don't we have enough empty bourgeois bands nowadays? Where are The Cars, man? :(
  • convercide #7 2 years ago

Yazoo! Erasure! Vince Clarke must be getting some serious cash from this... :)
  • Doctor_What #8 2 years ago

Woah, that's a damn good listing. They've spent serious money on that line-up. Shame it's the Lips interface and not Singstar, still, a very good range for Lips fans.
  • Stoatboy #9 2 years ago

Not my kinda game, but that is a cracking list.

No Echo & The Bunnymen is a travesty though.

As is the omission of Temptation by Heaven 17.

You are all revealing your age.
  • woodnotes #11 2 years ago

Awesome tracklisting. But no Rick Astley?

I wonder if this will contain any updates to the game itself. There's still room for improvement in Lips so I hope they haven't stopped already and decided to just pump out discs.
  • phAge #13 2 years ago

Tracklist looks awesome - but as much as I like this singing games (Singstar is brilliant with a festive crowd), Lips is just shit. How the hell do you fuck up the basics in a game like this, with all of MS' resources and software knowhow?
  • telboy007 #14 2 years ago

Now that is more like it. :)
  • Bealsy #15 2 years ago

    The should have called this

Lips: Shitfaced Home From The Pub
  • BaggyAnt #16 2 years ago

I urge anyone who has tried LIPS in the past pre-patching to give it another go. It is much better now. The addtion of Leaderboards and the improvement of voice tracking has made the game so good. OK the interface is still a bit clunky and swapping discs is a pain - but I think I now actually prefer it to Singstar...
  • DarthKebab #17 2 years ago

I am gonna say it.....Bros? where?
  • Doctor_What #18 2 years ago

Cheers BaggyAnt, I might give it another look some time.

    Anyway... Where's Depeche Mode?!
  • dr_swin #19 2 years ago

very good track listing but the whole karaoke game genre is so 2003.

Seriously? I tried it when it first launched, and that was a right ol' mess...

"A spokesman from Microsoft today apologised to the many widows whose husbands died because they tried to sing 'Vienna' on their 'Lips' product. 'We hadn't actually listened to it before signing it off to be included in the track list,' he confessed. 'If we had, we would have immediately realised the danger of death by stroke that singing the end of the chorus posed to overweight middle aged men who had been smoking for over two decades.'"
  • HuggyAtHome #25 2 years ago

Just get this song list on a SingStar disc and i'm a buyer.
  • Mayhem64 #26 2 years ago

And another compilation makes the mistake of putting "Video Killed The Radio Star" into the 80s :p

(it came out in 1979 btw)

And no Pet Shop Boys? Aside from that, it's a pretty eclectic mix of fabulousness...
  • bodypopper #27 2 years ago

Wot no Cabaret Voltaire or Front 242? We often gather round the Joanna to sing Sensoria at my gaffe.

DM's Just Can't Get Enough would be ideal but it's such a karaoke cliche that no doubt it's tied up in rights elsewhere.
Apart from that. great lineup. I'll keep my eye on the bargain bins this Xmas.

What next? Lips - Acid House edition?

  • Bigglesworth #28 2 years ago

    Um, isn't this Singstar 80s? Practically track-for-track?
(Factual correctness disclaimer: Ss80s only played when drunk)
  • Paulie_P #29 2 years ago

No John Fartham - You're the Voice?

Also fairly sure Aha's Take on me is on another disc, but what about their massively successful follow up 'The Sun Always Shines on TV'. No Cyndi Lauper or Madonna is criminal or that other guy, whats his name?.....oh yeah Michael Jackson. I suppose the fees for these artists would've been high (maybe not Lauper).

    I love my 80s cheese

Reading through that list makes me thank (the) God (of ROCK!) for Heavy Metal in the 80's. :)

I wonder if there will ever be a Metal karioke game. Headbangers like to sing too, you know.
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #31 2 years ago

  • Bigglesworth #32 2 years ago

6 of the 40 tracks in this are in Singstar 80s

Ahh, fair enough - I must've got^H^H^H seen the others in the SingStore.
  • Sparc #33 2 years ago

I thought the idea behind these sing-a-long games were that you bought one and then paid for additional songs as DL content. Seems like nowadays they release total rubbish for the games already out and keep the good songs to sell a whole new game. Complete rip off if you ask me.
  • Pulsar_t #34 2 years ago

    Yes needs more John Fartham..

Better yet, has anyone got around to writing a karaoke app that works with all music? The technology is there but the will is not.
  • Stepharneo #35 2 years ago

"And another compilation makes the mistake of putting "Video Killed The Radio Star" into the 80s :p"

Everyone knows that the 80's started in the late 70's.
