MS details Last.fm for Xbox Live

Create a station, listen with friends.

Last.fm on Xbox Live will let users create and share custom playlists and listen to them with friends, using the Party Radio function.

You'll even be able to make Last.fm stations, according to Kotaku.

These features, as well as the artist pages, can be seen in a fresh batch of Last.fm for Xbox 360 screenshots.

Last.fm was unveiled for Xbox Live during Microsoft's E3 press conference. The service will be free and is due out this autumn, alongside Facebook and Twitter integration, which has been equally tailored for the console.

It looks more like it's been hastily shoehorned into the dashboard than been "specifically tailored".

Is there any confirmation that this'll be available for Europe, and if so, free for European Gold subscribers? What with last.fm charging fees for non-US listeners.
  • ruttyboy #3 3 years ago

Why would you ever listen to music with friends... over the internet? 0_o
  • Bigglesworth #4 3 years ago

VidZone without the videos? Still, the social and profiling aspects of this should be tasty, if you don't find that kind of thing sinister of course.

Awesome. Gave up on Last.fm in favour of Spotify, precisely because it wanted to charge me to actually listen to the songs I'd chosen, rather than its suggestions.

All things point to Gold subscribers getting the paid-for equivalent of Last.fm as part of that payment, so that might sway me back to Last.fm!

"After the conference, Microsoft said that Last.fm for Xbox 360 could be sampled free by all Xbox Live members and the full service would be available to Gold subscribers, and people with Last.fm membership and Gold would "gain even more terrific personalisation features"."

Wait, so silver members get samples, gold members get the full service, and people with both a last.fm membership and gold get 'even more'? How can you get 'more' than the full service?

Also, I know it says "all" members, but they've often referred to other US only stuff (like Netflix) as if 'all' members could get it.

The next Xbox will just be a media center with a good graphics card.

But can we use last.fm for custom soundtracks whilst we're playing?!

" But can we use last.fm for custom soundtracks whilst we're playing?! "

    +1

I doubt I'd get any use out of it otherwise.

If you replace "good" for "average" you're describing PS3.

    >But can we use last.fm for custom soundtracks whilst we're playing?!

    I would assume so.
  • space_ace #12 3 years ago

it should be extra loud to suppress the xbox noise
  • Domovoi #13 3 years ago

Actually, if my Gold account pays for my last.fm account, how about just letting me sign in to Media Center with my account's Live ID, and offering me last.fm in Media Center?
  • Lukus #14 3 years ago

I love all this extra functionality that's been and keeps being added. The more there is the better, as long as it's ordered neatly in the dashboard.
  • Vistrix #15 3 years ago

So this is why Last.fm suddenly decided to start charging European customers!

"But can we use last.fm for custom soundtracks whilst we're playing?!"

Didn't think of this. That would be fantastic.
  • AphoticCosmos #17 3 years ago

Meh, not really interested personally, but if it's usable in games it'll probably be a pretty popular addition like Twitter and Facebook will be later on in the year.

I'm clearly old fashioned but as a audiophile and would be musician I find the increasing interest in consuming music in a such a poor quality way depressing.
  • ronuds #19 3 years ago

Not sure how this can be viewed as a bad thing, but I'm looking forward to it.

I think this is the way MS plans to keep people satisfied with paying for Gold.

Tagging music with a game title and then playing that station as a soundtrack would be amazing. Play "crackdown" radio -- Isaac Hayes, Curtis mayfield etc
  • Ryze #21 3 years ago

    Excellent stuff.
  • Aname #22 3 years ago

Can already use last.fm on the PS3 browser.. :/ Don't get why having a browser giving you access to millions of sites apparently is of no importance to some 360 owners whereas if you pay for Gold you get access to 3 sites and then suddenly that's a big deal..

let me guess, you're one of those people who thinks that he can hear the difference between digital and analogue.

    This integrates with Live.

Your Facebook frineds will see when you are online and what you are playing. You can post achievements and pictures to facebook. Last.fm will play ingame and might even be included in games (GVT IV radio station for example). Etc.... etc...

Last.fm is one of the most important things that happened for musicians.Plenty of small band were "recommended" by Last.fm.

This would be awesome if you could have the station playing while you're playing.

I doubt they've thought about integration here, more like shoehorning in anything they can.

@space ace - wow that trolling was so old skool it's got cobwebs on it. Fine some new material, loser.

@HonestJoe - go back to your LPs and your 8-tracks. This media revolution is not for you, you sandal-wearing weirdy-beardy.

@Aname - because this isn't just a few websites on the console! They're IN-TER-GREY-TED! No-one needs to browse the internet on their TV, it's for fat old housewives playing online poker. It's for the kind of people that used to send text messages through Sky TV. Go back to Pogo you clown shoe!

    Done :D

Onyx wins the thread for calling someone a clown shoe.

Onyx always wins the thread ;)
  • jaguarwong #29 3 years ago

I need to know is it will scrooble to my account damnit!

I listen to more music through my 360 (via a media server and network drive) than anything else - Last.fm is great but without scroobling it's nothing.
