MotorStorm 2 steering for Christmas

Set in the Tropics.

Sony plans to unleash a MotorStorm sequel on us this Christmas, if you believe the BBC and its words.

MotorStorm 2 was shown off to the BBC a little while ago. We're told it will take place on lush tropical islands rather then barren desert dust tracks, and feature "interactive vegetation", which sounds amazing.

In amongst all this will be four-player split-screen, which was something we all had a good belly-ache about originally.

The BBC says the code it saw was months from completion, but we're told everything was rock solid and visually sumptuous, and should be getting our own look at it soon.

Sony said it had no comment.

We are but an empty shell.

that does sound amazing, even if they use the same non ugraded engine I'd be happy ;)

Just fix minor collision detection issues, improve loading times, add in a few new modes like an arcade mode (split screen confirmed ftw) and you've got a great game.

I didn't buy the original cause it lacked split screen. So i'll certainly pick this one up.

It's great that the action takes place in an entirely different environment.

Give it custom soundtracks (which they probably will), split screen (check), and more gameplay options.

If that's the case, I'm in.

will they finish this one before they release it ;)

At the end of the BBC article linked above, the BBC dude goes mentalist over some yet-to-be-confirmed-it-exists NDA'd game:

I don't mean to be a tease - all I can say is that I was left speechless. If the footage I was shown truly is "in game", as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion.

And there I'll leave it. Feel free to speculate on what I was shown. I cannot, of course, confirm or deny what it was....

It sounds like the PR bumpf for the PS2!

That sounds excellent! Looks like the end of the year for Sony is gonna be a BIG one!

I've barely tried the original, but still...don't you think us gamers should demand a bit more from a sequel then just what is essentially small bugfixes and a couple of new modes? or is life with a PS3 that bad?;)

@Vegard - It's in a totally new environment for one, with the new stuff that's already confirmed, I just added on what I want from the game additionally.

I'm looking forward to this as I recall the leap in quality between World Rally Championship and its excellent sequel from the same developers on the PS2 being huge. The first MotorStorm was pretty damn good but felt a bit rushed with a lack of tracks and game modes so there's ample room for improvements in the sequel. The tropical island setting is going to mean the tracks are far more interesting than the somewhat bland desert ones in the first game and the four-way splitscreen mode is a nice addition too.

And at least we now have rumble support on the PS3; the lack of which was the one thing I hated about the original game until I imported a DualShock 3.

In my spare time and at work, we still do an odd lunchtime time trial on this (usually Wii sports now though). I'd love a new motorstorm game so I've no complaints here. Collision was my only problem with it.

The only thing I can imagine Sony themselves showing off is White Knight Saga. Still, as pointed out- Sony PR footage usually means "CG mockup far beyond capability of machine"...

    omgwtfbbc!?

Your source of quality technology journalism. At least they've finally progressed past copying out press releases, I suppose.

Jesus, BBC beats EG to a gaming story. Its the End of Days.

Edit: I might add though, that Darren Waters bloke does seem to get around a bit.

Anyway, Motorstorm was a damn fine game. More of the same with some extra bells, whistle and polish is most welcome.

What is all that "mystery game" chit chat further down his blog.

Interesting and annoying (due to the lack of detail) in equal amounts.

motorstorm + blue blue skies = racing nirvana
  • Artemus #20 4 years ago

Great, but please fix the car selection screen! And the broken difficultly on later races.
  • monkie_king #21 4 years ago

+1 on blue skies. ExciteTruck has some lovely off-road tropical environments.

60fps next time would add to the awesome, too. And Sega Rally style track deformation.

These will be AAA, and a must buy title for every gamer.
  • GamesConnoisseur #23 4 years ago

I am pretty sure the devs got plenty of feedbacks re collision issue, the majority of time its fine but when it go wrong, its go wrong big and costly to race! Not good for my blood pressures!

Lush tropics and interactive vegations! Count me in!

Christmas 2008 is looking ever so better!

Could be the second good game for the PS3
  • sharpfish #25 4 years ago

The demo of the first game was very impressive (better than I thought it was going to be from all the moaning about it not living up to the hype/renders). I'm very interested in an improved sequel because it's a pretty unique racer with great graphics and real involvement (You need to be thinking all the time).. even the sixasis steering worked ok once you are used to it and adds an extra dimension to the 'feel'... combine that with DS3 rumble + improved gameplay + tropical goodness and it's on my to buy list next xmas.

"The first MotorStorm was pretty damn good"

Yeah, love it to bits and still haven't finished it... I know it's totally irrational but I don't want it to end... That and I get distracted easily, not being able to play a single game consistently for more than 4 to 5 days*. And I have plenty of fun doing some races over and over and over... I'm very bad in remembering track names, but there's one with narrow rock tracks (only suited for motor cycles and quads) with terrific jumps. Not even Burnout 3 could get my adrenaline pumping as much.

    * Which means play sessions of one or two hours on each of those 4-5 days.
