MediEvil and Spyro PSN bugs

Former pulled, latter iffy.

Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer that problems with one of the downloadable PSone games released on PlayStation Network last Thursday have led to its withdrawal.

MediEvil has a confirmed crash-bug that causes it to fail on the third level. Sony said it would return to PSN once fixed and that anybody who had paid for it would be able to re-download it for free then.

Sony is also investigating reports of audio problems in Spyro 2, which remains available on the store, although there are anecdotal reports of broader issues with that one, so you might want to duck it for now too.

The two games were released for GBP 3.49 last Thursday along with Crash Bandicoot 2 at the same price, which seems to be working alright. Touch wood.

Sony wasn't able to offer an estimate on when MediEvil will return to the store, but said it would have something to say on that front in due course.

For more on what's going on, keep an eye on the official Sony forum thread relating to the problems.

wonder how many consoles they bricked

Looks like once again it's the public doing the beta testing. Great, well done, Sony!

I downloaded all three games but I've not played any of them for long enough to have come across any issues.

"wonder how many consoles they bricked" none! to brick the console you'd have to overwrite the bios. anyway... i wonder what they'll do. i seriously doubt they'll do anything to the actual game. more likely a firmware update. heh, unless it was a crash bug in the original game that happens on the target platform too :D

I was saying to someone the the other day .. "I wonder if they removed the modchip protection code from Medievil."

(which i seem to remember kicked in on about level 3 and stopped you progressing further into the game)

Hmmm I guess this is why some PSN stuff gets annoyingly delayed.

The "deeper issues" with Spyro is that you cannot access any levels from the first homeworld, you just get a black screen when you enter a portal.

That's exactly what happens. It's as you start the Hilltop Mausoleum level, and you just get an image of a disc with a scary exclamation mark.

"I take it Sony don't actually test these games before releasing on PSN"

Which makes you wonder why they aren't churning them out.
  • Darren #11 5 years ago

Maybe the real problem is related to the last firmware update? Might explain why the games were released with bugs if they'd been tested on the v1.8x firmware.... maybe?
  • DanWhitehead #12 5 years ago

Apparently the problem occurs on both PS3 and PSP though, which suggests it's an issue with the software itself not the hardware or firmware of any particular console.

    MediEvil?
Is that the new name for Trauma Center?
  • byron_hinson #14 5 years ago

They have finally removed Spyro from the PSN now too.

From the official PlayStation thread on the subject...

As you have probably noticed by now, Spyro 2 and Crash Bandicoot have also been temporarily withdrawn from the PLAYSTATIONŽStore due to some issues that you have brought to our attention.

We apologise for the inconvenience, and will update you as soon as more information becomes available.

I'm assuming they mean Crash 2, since there was nothing wrong with the original Crash Bandicoot.

    @ Dan

There's nothing wrong with Crash 2 either (that I've come across so far)
  • DanWhitehead #18 5 years ago

No, I've not encountered any problems with it either, though there are reports on the PlayStation forum of audio issues. Seems weird they'd remove it from the store though.

Well colour me shocked. Who would have guessed Sony would fuck up something with their emulation/download service? Oh yeah, everyone because when you rip someone else off it tends to be a bit rushed and under-researched. It really surprises me that people are still walking into stores and asking for these abominations.

Spyro doesn't work at all btw, it's not just the audio.

You know for a second there I thought you was referring to the Xbox 360 and its poor reliability record.

Spyro has been pulled now, I seem to remember it had the same copy protection as Medevil too.

Sony can borrow my old iso's if they need a working copy ;)
  • HonestJoe #23 5 years ago

Yeah, sounds like they left the old PS1 libcrypt copy protection in - two letters Sony: Q & A...
