LittleBigPlanet review on Sunday

Stay up to see what we make of it.

LittleBigPlanet has been winning headlines with consummate ease ever since its announcement at GDC last year, so it's my pleasure to tell you that one of the first reviews of the finished game will be posted on Eurogamer at midnight on Sunday.

Just so there's no doubt about that, I'm going to hit the button at 11.59pm. You can all read it a minute later. The game's obviously destroyed our web-servers once, with the beta key giveaway, but hopefully they will hold in two days' time now that we've upgraded them a bit.

LittleBigPlanet is, of course, Media Molecule's fascinating new 2D platform game where every level is something that the player could then go off and recreate in its entirety using the creation tools included.

The developer confirmed this week that all of your creations from the beta will be online for use with the full game, and of course the winning level in our ongoing LittleBigPlanet level design competition will be as well. Plus you'll be able to play it at the Eurogamer Expo.

For more on the game - as if you can take any more - check out today's Eurogamer TV Special on Media Molecule, where Johnny and James visit the studio and talk to the people behind it.

Then join us again at bedtime Sunday to find out whether it lives up to the massive, massive hype.

If this doesn't get 20/10 instant fail EG.

The Pro Evo review will be interesting this week one way or another.

Yeah, if they finally get round to sending it to me. Snarl.
  • Lucatron #6 4 years ago

It'll be an (undeserved if the beta is anything to go by) 10/10 IMO.
  • InsectJet #7 4 years ago

  • Cubfan #8 4 years ago

It'll score a 10/10, though (as mentioned) it doesn't deserve it. (it's still a good game, mind you, but definitely no 10/10).
  • spazmo #9 4 years ago

EG and Media Molecule seem to have become quite cosy. 10/10.

  • Law07 #10 4 years ago

an article announcing a review? who'd a thunk it?
  • Execta #11 4 years ago

It won't get 10/10. I'm so sure of it. It will get 11/10.

Played the beta today for the first time. It rocks, game of the fucking year, yeah!
  • solidSnake04 #12 4 years ago

  • Pirotic #13 4 years ago

Reviews will be interesting, in terms of concept it should get a 10/10, in terms of execution, not quite so high.
  • Les #14 4 years ago

Review scores in general are worthless and pointless (except for losers arguing about them) but I think it's fair to say that in the case of LPB they will have even less meaning (if that was logically possible): It's a game that's 99.9% about the experience that isn't in the box.
  • penhalion #15 4 years ago

Official Playstation Magazine already gave this a 10/10 while not actually saying anything about how it actually plays. I played the beta and quite frankly, unless you have some great plans to build levels, then it's not a patch on even the most basic super mario brothers game.

I'm amazed it didn't strike anyone as odd that dispite all the people on the beta, no-one really had anything tosay about the game. Most likely a lot of people were like me, and played through the demo thinking "What the heck was the fuss all about".

I predict a 10/10 from EG and a lot of disappointed people after launch day. Much like GTA 4.
  • Whatsfor #16 4 years ago

Eg will give 9/10. Unless Ellie reviews it in which case 3/10 as she wont be able to master the controller.

should be 10/10 considering a news item like this being a first. Announcing reviews... What has the world come to.
  • Monkey_Puncher #19 4 years ago

9/10 I reckon, amazingly original but controls let it down somewhat.
  • ronuds #20 4 years ago

This is going to be funny. If it doesn't get a 10, all the LBP lovers are going to demolish EG because "they feel" it deserves better. Remember the fallout after the MGS4 review? Oh God...good times. :D

If it gets the 10 so many are expecting, all will be right in PS3 land. :p

Why does LBP and PS3 elitism go hand-in-hand?
  • Apostle #21 4 years ago

Is there going to be a demo?
  • ronuds #22 4 years ago

"I'm amazed it didn't strike anyone as odd that dispite all the people on the beta, no-one really had anything tosay about the game."

I noticed this too. A lot of, "I made this level" and "such-and-such level is so cool!" but not much in the way of actual impressions beyond "this is great!" Like, I didn't hear many actual, in-depth impressions.

It all faded rather quickly, too. The beta is still going but there aren't many talking about it anymore.

Yes, yes...I know, "they're too busy playing."

I look forward to the review! I hope for EG's sake it's a good one. :p
  • DrDamn #23 4 years ago

    @Penhalion
What are you on about "no one had anything to say?". The LBP thread in the forums when from 30-odd pages to 100-pages.
  • JediMasterMalik #24 4 years ago

penhalion in disappointed with PS3 game shocker.

After playing the beta, it's an easy 9 or 10 for me. The tools are so incredibly versatile even in the limited beta, the stuff people came up with in such a short amount of time was amazing, it will be even more so in the full release. The game is not only a lot of fun to play, but a lot of fun to create.

And penhalion, what the fuck are you talking about no one had anything to say about the beta? There's a massive thread in the forums about that's updated at least every day with loads of people talking about it. You weren't expecting people to PM you with impressions were you? All the gaming podcasts I've listened to have talked about it too.

The best thing about the game is that it's going to get better every single day you play it, with more people making better levels.
  • topblood #25 4 years ago

its obviously going to get a 10/10

    GotY + 10/10 or

Like ZZap's review of SEUCK years ago they'll say something like:

"There's no doubt that The Shoot 'Em Up Construction Kit is an exceptional piece of software - the Gold Medal award is thoroughly deserved. However, since it's in a class of its own we feel that it's unfair to compare it with other software on the market, and therefore there are no ratings. We have offered three individual opinions as a guideline, but ultimately it's up to you to decide whether or not you'd like to try and design your own games.

  • El-Dev #29 4 years ago

topblood, you're on a gaming forum on a friday night, saying this game is for geeks is somewhat ironic it must be said.

As for OPSM giving it a 10, it's slightly suspicious an official sony magazine giving their golden hope a 10. It's like the way the official 360 mag gives nearly every 360 exclusive a 10 so they can quote the article and the score on their promotions. I'll wait for independant reviews, but I do take alot of them with a pinch of salt and prefer to see what people on these forums say. So far, what I've read from those who have played the beta has made me pre-order the game.
  • beastmaster #30 4 years ago

the voting for gamespots version of the little big planet level design competition, is now up:

    http://uk.gamespot.com/special_feature/littlebigplanet-contest/index.html

Having missed out on the Eurogamer version i resubmitted my design for this one and got onto the not so short list. Mine is Number 2, but they have only included the overall level view, not the step by step story board i also submitted.

If you would like to see the full submission it is available at the link below, any votes would be very greatly appreciated.

  • Remy85 #33 4 years ago

How the hell does a review unveiling get to have it's own news posting its release date?
  • Fab4 #34 4 years ago

Topblood, you are a fucking moron...anyone that uses the term 'proper gay', as an insult, is.

It will either get a 9 or 10. You only have to see what has been created with the limited resources of the beta to see the longevity of the game. That being said, if you dont like platform games and/or have no creative talents, then you arent going to like it.
  • bad09 #35 4 years ago

Finally no more pointless LBP articles, can't wait!!! ;)

Still, I'm mildly interested in LBP so I'll have a look but until I actually play a demo myself I'm not convinced fully.

Oh EG, please give it 8/10 if only for comical re-run of MGS4 review :)
  • 3william56 #36 4 years ago

The marketing director at EG must be ransoming small children to get someone to hit the 8/10 button. The interwebs would explode (and EG's hitcount would go through the roof).

Hurrah for being in Australia - will be posted just in time for work.
  • Beano #37 4 years ago

8/10 ... because it's on PS3, innovative and the title does not contain the word "Halo" ;)
  • Beano #38 4 years ago

"Then join us again at bedtime Sunday to find out whether it lives up to the massive, massive hype."

    8/10 confirmed!
  • SuperBas #39 4 years ago

This will get a 10/10, and be overhyped shite, just like GTA4.
  • IronGiant #40 4 years ago

Amusing how people who've only played the beta are saying it's not a 10/10 game, try playing the full game first as that's what a review will be based on! I reckon 9/10, it's a brilliant game which will evolve and improve over time. Every time it's been shown to the gaming press it's gotten praise, how many games can you say that about? God only knows what MM have got planned for their next game:)
  • bioreit #41 4 years ago

PS3-lovers in "EG is biased against our wonderful precioussssss" shocker. Later at 11: "Use of the dollar sign when spelling names of corporations."

The score should be either 3/10 or 10/10, just for the laughs. Hoping (and expecting) it's the latter, though, because this is the game that's tipped me over the edge from "maybe getting a PS3 at some point" to "getting a PS3 before Christmas".
  • T4RG4 #42 4 years ago

No doubt I'll be up anyway, so if the Eurogamer site loads, I'll take a wee look...

Cant say the game interests me all that much (same way RPGs and Golf Sims do not, they simply arent my cup of tea) but LBP's style, promotion, the people behind it (of those that I know, all are very nice chaps who deserve success) all go hand-in-hand with a pinch of originality which leads me to think the game deserves a high mark.

10/10 would probably, looking from afar at what LBP is, be comical (unless justified in the review) so I think it'll get... erm... 8/10!

However, I havent played it so what do I know?

    Done.
  • whome #43 4 years ago

score is irrelevant, funny & original & the create a level tools are pure genius, is a masterpiece.
  • septimus #44 4 years ago

    8/10... maybe even a 7?
  • ParanoidZombie #45 4 years ago

@a bunch of idiots who think PS3s exclusives always get 8 or less, because they're not on X360: one of the following games got a 9/10, while the others are 8/10:

    Gears of war
    Lost odyssey
    Mass Effect
    Uncharted
    Viva pinata

  • woodnotes #46 4 years ago

Even if it isn't worthy (although it will be), it'll still get a 10/10. There's been tons of LBP marketing on this site which pretty much guarantees it. Same reason why Pure got 9/10.
  • onezeonx #47 4 years ago

Jesus Christ the cries of ''Biaaaas'' are getting tiresome on here.
What will you Sony cockgobblers do if it gets a 10/10? Will you finally stfu and stop whinging? Here's hoping huh?
I can see it getting a 9/10 myself.
What I don't get is, what will this game be like for guys like me? Guys that have all the artistic vision of a shit covered pebble. I honestly can't be arsed with the simplest of FPS map creators, let alone this. Is there enough of a single player element on the disc to keep me from getting massively bored? And does it have an actual storyline?
Not slamming the game by any means, I honestly think it looks smashing and hope it sells facking loads, if only to get the message out to developers that original IPs that contain fresh ideas do sell just as well as ole 'generic space shooter X'.

This is going to set EG servers on fire. Its hard to understand if this gets less than a 9 at least considering the likes of Halo3 got a 10 and other questionable games that just milk the genre with little diversity or creativeness.

Anywho, I wont be waiting up, but i predict an 8.

  • The-Bodybuilder #59 4 years ago

An 8 is so early noughtiees (along with halo).

"What the fuck eurogamer? I decided to not go out with my mates (including a hot chick) so I could read the review....."

I hope for your sake you're kidding... ;) Just import the title for little money from the USA and don't be bothered with the reviews as they're irrelevant. As someone suggested, this game can only be judged after it's been around for say a month or six, to see if it has established a creative community. Before that time, the only thing reviewers can judge are the creation tools and IMO they are utterly unqualified for that task.
  • JigenD #79 4 years ago

Having played the beta, and owning all the platforms, if this doesn't sweep 10/10s everywhere, reviewers have officially made themselves obsolete.

This will probably not be as good as MGS4.
  • suburbanboy #82 4 years ago

I'd be more than a little concerned if it does get full marks or even close to, as there are some serious game killing flaws, which a lot of previews or even beta testers havent even touched upon. Its a good first attempt, a classic lesson in art design, but not always in gameplay.

Gameplay can be quite repetitive in nature though addicting nevertheless, and even when it does branch out (on levels like space invaders/pinball) for all its good intentions it kinda falls flat on its face, as you'd be better off playing the game the concept came from, so a lot of stuff does feels gimmicky.

The collision detection is by no means perfect either. Also the layered parts of levels were frustrating enough in Super Mario Sunshine with the Wiimote, but its not fun having the character automatically change to a different layer in LBP, and consequently die as a result of the game and not your own actions. I would much prefer the option to control Sackboy with the D-pad as the analogue sticks are unweildy and feel loose. I would certainly hope that the full release offers complete character customizability, not limited to clothing/accessories, but being able to change Sackboy's own physics properties, add double/higher jump/full gravity options, to make sackboy feel less floaty and less prone to wayward manoeuvres.

Also the game seems to lack any kind of pick ups that offer character deformations (ie: mushrooms in Mario), that add an extra dimension to the gameplay (eg: ability to shrink so you can enter a tiny gap). The whole sticker pick up system is annoying when put into use in a level, (having to scroll through tons of items just to find the one you need to progress), when it would be better to have a recently picked up item mapped to a button for immediate use.

Being limited to taking pictures in eyetoy just isnt going to cut it, as they come out looking blurry. It makes a mockery of the user generated ethos, when you cant import your own designs/music from the HD. Would be nice to think a lot of these issues are beta specific, though as the beta was taken from a late in the day build I imagine they will still surface in the final release.

So yeah it concerns me a little that its problems might get overlooked, due to how much charisma the game oozes. I mean if the game looked more like Crash Bandicoot does these days, few would stand for the oft broken gameplay. Based off the beta I'd give it....

Graphics 9/10 (Not quite as pretty as the early videos suggested, with a lot of pixellated edges on show, but damn close)
Sound 8.8/10 (Stephen Fry is an inspired choice of narrator, and the music will stick in your brain for days)
    Gameplay 7.5/10
Lastability 10/10 (Unlimited replayability due to 100s of levels popping up daily, most of which are predicatably rubbish, and even the diamonds can be a little rough around the edges, but stuff like God Of War - Demon Skull show off best just what can be achieveved with a little time and effort)
    Overall 8.7/10

  • captainrentboy #83 4 years ago

Fuck, I got up at 11am for nothing. God damn! Back to bed.
Are Sony lovers going to go fucking mental if this gets a 9/10? Are some of you lot really that petty and sad that you'll kick up a shitstorm over 1 point? (It'll be fun to read though I s'pose)
GOW2/Fable 2/Banjo3 could all get a 6/10 and I wouldn't give a flying toss, as long as I actually have fun with the games, that's all that matters.
  • miiiguel #84 4 years ago

Plz, plz do get an 8, so I can laugh - not with the game - with the SDF, and their conspiracy theories.

Hmmm, didn't the article say 11:59 pm on Saturday a few days ago?
  • MrNyarlathotep #90 4 years ago

    @STKD;

It's '2D' through design choice, which isn't quite the same thing as you think obviously. It's also heavily physics based in the same ways something like Half Life 2 or Portal are.

It's not like there aren't plenty of other games on the current gen consoles that aren't effectively 2D games in design that people get excited about either - any RTS, any bemani (Guitar hero, RockBand), any JRPG (Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery), any beat 'em up (Soul Calibur, VF, SF4, Tekken), most racers (GT, Forza) and most sports games (FIFA, PES). The vast majority of 'sandbox' games are also basically restricted to a couple of planes of movement too with the exception of Just Cause and Crackdown.

What it is however, is amazingly good fun with phenomenal amounts of charm, and the most intuitive and flexible 'level create' mode I have ever seen, with incredibly well thought out online integration.

Assuming you are actually baffled and not just trolling anyway.

Jesus christ, is it not possible that EG will give it a fair review? If they give it 1/10, then fine - their opinion. Likewise for 10/10. You should never rely on reviews anyway - the experience will always differ from person to person.

All the PS3 fanboys are saying that it'll be a bad score because EG have a bias against the PS3, while the Xbots assume it'll be a 10/10 'cause EG are cosy with the developers. It's making me want to punch some babies.

I'm sorry, but anyone who thought "midnight on Sunday" meant last night and not tonight is retarded beyond belief.

why would a simple grade of some website called eurogamer bring me tears? if one really likes a game, then review scores don't matter. how hard is that to understand? the review score is only a reflection of the reviewers opinion. why would I care? only simple people care for review scores.

and the fact that you actually care how owners of another console feel about a simple score saddens me, it just shows how retarded people can be.

    Reviews mean sweet fuck all.

Im just excited to read about the final build.

This game is still going to sell millions of PS3's and Copies of LBP regardless of whatever number is at the end of his post.

I really want to read his oppinion.

I bet half the fucking trolls in here will read the score and then leave as if it means something.

    Tools.

I would still get this game if it gets a 4/10

    I couldn't give a fuck.

Even though NickJC1 has probably produced the most unsporting, polite post ever, even as an Xbox fanboy, I disagree with him. Let LBP be the best game ever. I cannot imagine that Microsoft will not bring out its own LBP-beater. I sincerely hope that LBP will be everything that PS3 owners wanted and expected.

Why would an Xbox even care about a PS3 game being good?

Seriously... get a fucking life, it's just a fucking console...

It's just... a fucking console... you could buy one if you wanted...

I could get an Xbox.. I just don't want one at the moment. When they fix the Red Ring of Death Issues, I'll buy one, thats not a stab it's just the honest reason for me not getting one.

I support good game development no matter what it is.

Couldnt care less about the console and their Brand.

    I just want good games.

What the fuck is a fanboy anyway?

I seriously miss the point to why they even exist.

I know Fable II is on 360, Im not going to shit on it just because its an Xbox game.

I hope the developers do really well, because in the end, games are all that matter.

Fanboys need to get a fucking life.
