Kane & Lynch film to star Bruce Willis News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Ellie Gibson

21 October, 2009

The producer of the Kane & Lynch movie has confirmed Bruce Willis will take a starring role.

According to Adrian Askarieh, speaking to Game Daily, Willis will play the first-half of the dynamic duo. The role of Lynch is yet to be cast.

"The script has been incredibly well-received around town," said Askarieh. "After Bruce Willis read it, he called it one of the best action scripts he's ever read, and Bruce is an expert in terms of action scripts because he's read everything over the last 20 years."

So what's it about? "Well, it's going to have the basic premise. But the details for the movie are going to be different. It's not going to have every sequence from the game, but it's essentially the story of a mercenary teaming up with a schizophrenic psychopath to save his wife and daughter." Wasn't that the plot of last week's Archers?

Kane & Lynch is due to start shooting in March. Locations are yet to be confirmed, but Askarieh's thinking "South America, Europe and possibly Louisiana". The director will be Simon Crane. He was second unit director on Tomb Raider and Troy, amongst other blockbusters.

Askarieh has much experience of this kind of thing, having previously produced the rubbish but high-grossing Hitman movie. He is also working on the big screen adaptation of Just Cause, another Eidos product.

"Just Cause is a great action-adventure spy movie, which is a totally different motif than Hitman," he observed.

"Hitman is a great assassin movie, Kane and Lynch is a great buddy action movie. So all these are first-and-foremost good movie ideas, then videogames."

Not convinced, but then you have to admit that an A-List celebrity like Brucie being onboard makes things interesting. I accept that its unlikely he would agree to take part unless it was a damn good script.

I loves me some Bruce, but he has made his share of clunkers. It's cool that a game adap has attracted a genuinely A-list star (for the first time ever? Was Jolie A-list when she made Tomb Raider?) and it does make me more excited to see the film (especially as I couldn't give a shit about the game), but I wait to be convinced!

I think the game would make a great movie, specially with a star cast... But since it's made by the guy who did Hitman, I won't get too much hope on it. Shame.

Every time I see Lynch, I'm reminded of Waingro (Kevin Gage) in Heat. Maybe he'd make a good Lynch. Failing that, Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach in Watchmen) would make a cool Lynch (or an awesome Riddler in the next Batman).

After seeing Die Hard 4.0 (point o, FFS!) and crying hard I am quite sure Bruce wouldn't know a good action script even if it hit him in the forehead. Nowadays he only likes to go up on the big screen to show his raised-eyebrow-move.

I totally agree with the Kevin comment. He looks exactly like him tbh!
But I would prefer Johnny Depp as The Riddler.

You know, if Bruce Willis hadn't been in 5th Element then that movie would've been all the worse for it. Bruce is the man! (This is also true according to Monty Python.)

That is an awesome shout my son (and an awesome movie). Billy Bob Thornton is rumoured for the part though.

Awesome news! The story was the best thing about that game.

I wonder if the guy who wrote the original story at IO will see any of the millions this will inevitably make at the box office?

Heat is the BEST film. In my opinion anyway. I like Billy Bob, but I don't think he's right for the part. They need someone bulky and more menacing!

Might be a game movie to be not bad, but then again it might not, but at least its worth a watch with him in it.

I wouldn't say Heat is "the best" movie, though, it is a very good movie. But, as far as I remember, Bruce Willis isn't in it.

@EarlBassett - and you must be unaware of personal opinion. I like Heat more than most films. In fact I like many of Michael Mann's movies more than most films. Is that so bad? To have a certain taste in movie and for my favorite to be Heat? Or are you an elitist prick whose opinion is CLEARLY actually fact?

Oh and FYI I'm almost double that age... :'(

For what it's worth, Heat is one of my favourite movies and i think Michael Mann's movies in general are amazingly entertaining.

DISCLAIMER: This is my opinion and cannot be disputed.

I was actually quite impressed by the game until it started requiring me to be stealthy and thus turned impossible. Also, it managed a level set in Tokyo that actually looked like Tokyo for the first and only time in living memory. The point is, the characters, dialogue and narrative were unusually strong for a game, and I'd certainly rather see this made into a film than a great many other games.

But not with Bruce Willis. He's rubbish, and every good film I've ever seen him in either played specifically to his weaknesses (Fifth Element, Sin City) or was good despite him rather than because of him.

EDIT: now I have a new PC maybe I'll retry playing this.

hmm this guy is like: "well trying to make a movie out of a good videogame doesn't seem work... let's try some really crappy ones"... Having Bruce Willis on board is not going to save it when the producer is a idiot like this.
