Japan gets new DSi XL colours

Plans for Europe due later today.

With just a couple of weeks to go until the new 3DS is unveiled at E3, Nintendo has dropped the price of previous iterations in Japan.

As reported by Kotaku, the cost of the DSi XL is being cut from ¥20,000 (around £150) to ¥18,000 (£130). The DSi is also falling in price from ¥18,900 (£140) to ¥15,000 (£110).

On top of all that, three new DSi XL colours are being released in Japan. Blue, Yellow and Green models will hit the shops on 19th June.

Nintendo of Europe told Eurogamer there are "no plans right now" to introduce the new colours here. But can we expect a price cut?

"We will be making a statement about our plans in Europe later on today and we appreciate your patience until that time," said a spokesperson.

Nice colours (ish) but a bit late in the day...

Its all about the 3DS (or whatever they call it) these days! Lets just hope it has a better form factor than the first DS...

Considering the DS stills sells so well.....part of me wonders if they wouldn't have been better off targetting the 3DS for late 2011 and just hype a minor Wii revamp this year.

Considering the DS has yet to hit $99 in the US I'd imagine there's still massive room for growth.

Of course I suppose the main issue with the DS isn't lack of hardware sales...but the fact such a stupid amount of people now pirate its software. Hopefully the 3DS will have some very strong anti-piracy measures (although allowing backwards compatibilty with the DS could sadly leave that door wide open).

Wish there was a discount for getting all three...

It doesn't sell anywhere near as well as it used to, it could be because everyone has one and doesn't want to upgrade to an XL and thereforethe market is saturated, or it could be that casual gamers are losing interest in someway? But most likely for me is the ridiculous level of new consoles they release, this DSi and DSi XL have been released and have promised exclusive titles to encourage DS and DS Lite owners to upgrade, yet I'm yet to see a single exclusive DSi/DSi XL game on the shelves, one that makes use of that camera etc.

Maybe because of that, a lot of their audience feel stung? I know I would, but then I stuck to just a DS Lite, I knew A DSi/XL wasn't worth while.

Lets hope this 3DS isn't more of the same in that respect.

I upgraded to a DSi XL this weekend. I only had a Lite so I skipped a generation, but my God was it worth it.

im suprised ninty are still making money from this staggered release of colour versions... its a bit of a cheap trick really, but since almost everyone that wants a ds probably has one already its their only option really...

The introduce of 3DS means I won't download any games for DSi... unless they provide a possibility to move them onto 3DS. Considering a revamped/upgraded 3DSi or something one year later with still no possibility to do so, I also really don't know if I will ever download anything from them.

So any realistic comment that could possibly put Nintendo in an ever so bad light gets neg feedback nowadays?

Honestly Nintendo fans, I've been a huge fan, and the N64 is by far the best console I've ever had the fortune of owning, but the sheer amount of updated releases with broken promises regarding the DS surely can't be perceived as anything but a bit of a swindle. Can you all honestly say you're happy that Nintendo has back on it's word regarding support for DSi and XL exclusive titles? We haven't seen one since the DSi launch, sure it has other benefits over the Lite, but if you upgraded for the new DSi retail titles you must feel disappointed.

I'm a big fan, I just think they're slowly creeping into Activision/Bobby Kotick style territory with some of these moves.

I bought a DSi XL because of it's superior screen size and quality. My DS collection has never looked so good. Also, the larger touch screen makes games a little more responsive and easier to play. Therefore, my DS collection has never played so well.

Furthermore, I did not buy it for DSi exclusive titles. I realise the catelogue of DSi exclusives is pretty low at the moment but this was never the point in getting it in the first place. I wanted a superior, DS gaming experience and the XL has delivered in spades.

Besides, I'm pretty sure what Nintendo are doing is making sure their market for DSi games is larger before they fully commit to it. The DS Lite is still the standard for most portable gamers which is why games like Warioware DIY aren't doing as well as other games in the series.

The whole DSiWare thing is exclusive to DSi.
As for boxed games, since the release of DSi I think every DS owner has felt a slowdown in the sheer numbers of worthy titles coming out. There WERE strong ones, like Layton, Ace Attorney 5, pokémon... But there were less than usuall and they didn't have the freshness we were used to with the DS's debut. For that, you might want to look at DsiWare, I hear there are some gems amongst the shovelware.
