Jaffe "happy" with Ratner directing GoW

"I actually really like X-Men 3."

David Jaffe has said he is "happy" with the choice of Brett Ratner as director of the God of War film.

Ratner, responsible for the Rush Hour trilogy and X-Men: The Last Stand, confirmed his role on the project at a Hollywood party recently.

"I really like Red Dragon, I really like the first Rush Hour, I actually really like X-Men 3. I'm not one of these Ratner haters who says, 'Oh the guy can't direct,' - I think he makes really entertaining movies," said Jaffe in a filmed response to the news (spotted by VG247).

"God of War was meant to be this totally accessible, mainstream equivalent of a popcorn summer blockbuster action movie. When you look at the directors who really do that well... I'm happy with the choice of Brett Ratner."

The God of War film is still in its infancy, and being put together by a team made up of a Producer from Batman Begins and writer David Self, who did the screenplay for Road to Perdition, which we quite liked.

Jaffe seems content, then, and excited to see what comes out when an entertaining director and mature writer are mixed together. But there is a slight twang of regret.

"Would it have been cool if it was [Steven] Spielberg? Yeah. Ridley Scott? Yeah, that would have been awesome. You know, Guillermo [del Toro] would have been awesome," said Jaffe.

"But I don't look at Brett Ratner and say we're going to have a sh*t movie. Obviously the proof will be in the pudding, we'll see what happens."

    Ratner is a hack, unfortunately.

I like the first Rush Hour. I hated X-Men 3 but hey, that was probably due to the crap story and script.
  • Widge #3 3 years ago

Especially considering it followed up a rather excellent sequel.

I look at Brett Ratner and say we're going to have a sh*t movie

X-Men 3 blows and is the worst film of the trilogy (X2 being the best). Rush Hour 1 was fun forgettable film the rest were lame . Red Dragon was ok but no Silence of the Lambs.

Just had a look at IMDB he's also directing Beverly Hills Cop IV. Fantastic!

Anybody who "really liked X-Men 3" is clearly not of sound mind.

Wolverine: "We'll stand together AS X-MEN!"

    The entire audience: "grooooaaaaaaan"

Ratner actually rewrote Wolverine's original line to that one even when the scriptwriter's told him that wasn't really what Wolverine was all about, the guy is a talentless hack and completely in love with himself.
  • Vin #7 3 years ago

He's no worse than Boll or Anderson, at any rate.

    Quint2020,

'Ratner actually rewrote Wolverine's original line to that one even when the scriptwriter's told him that wasn't really what Wolverine was all about'

    LOL

But then Marvel Comics themselves forget that Wolverine is a loner with a gruff demeanor and take-no-prisoners attitude and he's in the X-Men, X-Force and even the Avengers for fuck sake!

Ratner is the Schumacher of X-men films.

Company boss in "employee doesn't suck" shocker, more at 11.

If you read between the lines you can see he actually hates Ratner and is really annoyed at the direction the game has been taken. It's also a really sloppy and underhand diss to Ratner with the 'better director' comparisons and the "i'm not one of the haters" jibe that reminds everyone that there are haters out there. I'm sure there are del Toro haters but you can guarantee the press-releases for his movies don't mention them.

The movie is shaping up to be terrible and Jaffe knows it. He's releasing something like this now as a subtle message to the movie department saying that he's unhappy and he doesn't care who knows it. He's probably planning a big "told you so" for when the bad reviews come out too.

Yeah and all of those story arcs and series that ignore those things generally get ripped apart by critics and the fan base alike.......... just like X-Men 3.

Ugh, Spielberg for this? Yuk! Rather have Ratner then. I also like Rush Hour. A lot is going to depend on whether or not it will have a decent script, and who's the lead actor. X-Men 3 was ok ... didn't like the story too much, but I loved the ending . Then again, extremely few people actually got to see the ending ... I managed to convince one other couple to stay until the credits had finished, the rest of the cinema was empty.

The amount of X-Men 3 hate in here warms my heart. You're all good people.

"I'm not one of these Ratner haters who says, 'Oh the guy can't direct,'"

Well I am and X men 3 was fucking shit!
  • PlugMonkey #20 3 years ago

Speaking of Paul W.S. Anderson, has anybody seen Death Race? I loved the original, but looking at the trailer for the new one I can't help feeling Anderson only took it on because he couldn't get the Full Auto license.
  • viper_h #21 3 years ago

How many Movie World Championships has Ratner won? I doubt it comes anywhere near Schumi's F1 record! :p

    X-Men 3 sucked ass. Just like Spider-Man 3 did.

Don't just hate Brett "painfully mediocre" Ratner for ruining X-Men 3; there's also Halle "up-her-arse" Berry to thank to!

Where has all the love for X Men 2 come from. I need to wacth it again now and try to remember why I was disappointed with it. But the best comic movie ever. Please!!!!
  • peterfll #24 3 years ago

See "Batman Returns" for best comic adaption, and none of that jumping-on-the-bang-wagon-nonsense the "The Dark Knight" is the best comic adaption. No-one gets their nose bitten off in "The Dark Knight" so it gets a fail for that alone.
  • andywilkie35 #25 3 years ago

Did David "Solid Snake" Hayter write the screenplay for X-Men 2?
  • PlugMonkey #26 3 years ago

peterfll - If you don't think The Dark Knight is the best comic book adaptation evar then you're definitely not going to like this.

(although things have improved slightly since last week, when it was #1)
  • Thunderbolt #27 3 years ago

I'm not going to say whats the best superhero movie ever.

The Dark Knight was indeed excellent

But the most enjoyable superhero movie this year has got to be Hellboy 2 with Iron Man a close second

X-Men 2 has some fucking awesome action sequences - in particular the opening and Striker's assault on the school. It gets a bit silly at the end with Cerebro, but it's a really good film and definitely better than the first. Not the best comic book movie, but quite possibly top five. Batman and Spider-Man are my joint favourites though. And I haven't seen X-Men 3, but it can't be any worse than Blade Trinity, surely?!
  • BlackKraken #29 3 years ago

Nothing is worse than blade trinity.
Blade trinity makes any of Uwe Bolls' movies look good in comparison.
  • 3william56 #30 3 years ago

    Damned by faint praise.
  • 7creature #31 3 years ago

LOL, X-Men 2 the best? Nice visuals, but laughable contents - and ending was the most pathetic crap I've seen around that time. X1 >> X2 (well Kurt was not bad - even though a bit old).

Wish they did Ultimate X-Men with some competent director (my top choice would be David Cronenberg - even though I don't expect him to be interested in that).
