Halo franchise to expand in "many different directions" News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

29 January, 2009

Microsoft Game Studios hopes to expand the Halo franchise in "many different directions", including new genres and entertainment not game-related at all.

"We tend to view the franchise side of Halo as an entertainment property, and something that we hope to expand in many different directions: both through additional genres of gaming and additional ways to tell the story that may not be game-related at all," Jason Pace, Halo Wars lead producer and Halo franchise overseer, told Eurogamer.

"So I think it's fair to say we're always looking for new opportunities, new genres to tell the story in. And whenever we find a great fit we'll pursue it."

Jason Pace will help bring Halo Wars and Halo 3: ODST to market this year. And, when pushed about the future, he told us: "Those are the only projects I can discuss at the moment".

But what about the Peter Jackson Halo project Microsoft announced at X06 and has been recruiting for ever since?

"That I'm not at liberty to comment on," said Pace.

A Halo Wars demo will be available from Xbox Live Marketplace from 5th February, before the full game launches exclusively for Xbox 360 on 27th February.

Look out for our Halo Wars Eurogamer TV Show soon to find out more.

Yeah, I'm sure there's at least three genre's worth of pumping in those teats.

Subtle confirmation: Halo Karting coming to a 360 in 2010.

So you say, but apart from the Halo games, and some bonus-DVD-filler-short-cutscene-type films, there's nothing to suggest that Halo expands anywhere that far from gaming. I think Bungies' heads have expanded up their own arse. How about less of throwing Peter Jackson's name about, and more of making halo 4 (and making it more different and better from halo 1 and 2 and 3, and putting a full fledged level editor in it)?

I'm sure you could do a Mass Effect style game with a Halo skin.

um, its game universe with a solid ip foundation

anyone that has read the books will know there is PLENTY of potential in it

shit, a KOTOR style RPG would be great

of course, if you hate halo, you'll never want to see this truth, cause as we all know, ms is the devil, and halo his tool....

Never been a huge fan of halo (mainly play for the online multiplayer), wasn't really interested in halo wars until I downloaded a movie off the marketplace and it looks quite good....will play the demo and see if its worth buying.

While Halo Wars does look worth checking out, I think i'll have had more than my fill of Halo after that.

I really don't think there's enough in there to squeeze out more games or other media. Heck, even Halo 2 and 3 could have been made into a single game. No more MS, get some original ideas.

Ummm.. books, comics, fan-fiction

Fan fiction doesn't count, are you high? Comics? Like 1 or 2 graphic novels, one of which was a retelling of the game's story? Big deal. Books, OK there's like 6 books or something, but my hobby is gaming, not reading.

And as a gamer, I want games. I've been quite critical of Halo as of late, I enjoyed the hell out of the first, and liked the 3rd one quite alot too.

And while I still have the odd blast at H3 when drunk or whatever, and even though I still enjoy it, after playing games like cod4 and battlefield:BC. I kinda wish a new halo was evolved or spun-off into games with destructible scenery or perks or something, anything else to make it a bit new and a bit different.
