GTA IV has sold 8.5 million units News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

6 June, 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV sold 8.5 million units between 29th April and 31st May, with shipments to retail now at 11 million, Take-Two said in its latest round of financials, which announced a USD 98.2 million Q2 net profit.

It took Take-Two subsidiary Rockstar Games just a fortnight to surpass one million units sold in the UK alone, as part of six million sales in its first week on the shelves worldwide - worth USD 500 million according to Take-Two's figures.

However, the publisher also revealed yesterday that the much-anticipated GTA IV downloadable content for Xbox 360 has been put back a bit and will now appear in the company's November-to-January quarter.

And while 8.5 million is a bloody lot of videogames, GTA IV still has some way to go if it's to eclipse its predecessor, San Andreas, which NPD Group data this week pegged as the biggest-selling US release of all time with 9.43 million units sold in that region.

At least these figures are clear on the sold number and shipped numbers being seperate. Most seem to leave that out.

I want more GTA4 news! For example some tips and tricks articles, or how you're liking it now you've played it longer.

I'm finding it difficult to find the enthusiasm to put GTA!V in the drive. I only do one mission and then switch it off.

It's been alright but it's becoming a chore at the moment - maybe I've played too much of it?

That's nice, but **GTA IV will not be this year's biggest selling game**. Wii Fit will be. Mark. My. Words.

I'm laying some odds on DLC including some of the missing 'San Andreas' elements in GTA IV. My personal wants would be businesses, planes and the return of a parachute!

The best thing about GTA is that you can do a Micheal Ryan and lets sum steam off.

Shooting the fuck out of people is suck good fun and a good stress reliever.

I rarely play it now, in fact I've only touched multiplayer briefly (to muck about in the game world) over the past two weeks I think. I just don't find it interesting, I've been there done that with the previous games and multiplayer isn't as much fun as expected (and I've wanted it for ages!).

Hopefully DLC will bring some magic 'stuff' to the party such as parachutes etc (which erm, should really have been in from the start ;) )

@Miguel

Its "key to the city".

I have yet to get 100% but im not too far off i just dont think its much fun anymore and its against my instincts to do unfun things in my freetime. If i play in really short bursts i still find it kind of entertaining but not even close to the fun i get from NG2.

I cant believe anybody can get much enjoyment out of driving around the city looking for pigeons. Feels more like work than fun to me.

I agree with people here, I played it most days after the first week, haven't touched it since; except to show a cousin of mine. I just don't find myself wanting to play it - this doesn't take away the fact that it is a very very good game, it just doesn't have that 'comebackability' (good eh?).

I am usually too, but not with this one. I'm playing the multiplayer a lot, or at least trying to depsite spending about 80% of the time trying to find the right game and reconnecting.

But I have no desire to go back to the single player. On one hand I thought the actual design of GTA 4's 'packages' was genius. You can have pigeons anyway outside and they give off a noise aswell so you don't have to be able to see them...

BUT they don't seem to be placed in the obvious landmark positions they were in times past. You used to get a 'feeling' that there'd be a package in certain places. My spidey sense has been way off with the pigeons and there's fecking 200 of them. I thought I'd have found at least 100 over the course of me playing the single player, but I've got about 15.

(although i was about halfway thru SP when I discovered them but even so)

Gah, I hate to agree with you guys, but I have to.
I've never really liked the GTA cames (I even got bored of the first), but always forced myself to try to like it. GTA4, however, I genuingly liked, it drew me in.

But the dreaded tediousness is settling in now, like the previous games. Before I behaved like I was in the real world, driving slowly, stopping at red light, never skipping cab rides, listening to the radio, watching tv, walking (like I've done in shenmue and mass effect, I get sucked in). But now I drive like a maniac, run, skip cab rides, and now I've started randomly killing pedestrians (always the first sign of me getting bored of the game).

I've played the NG2 demo more times than GTA in the last few days.

I'm still loving it, although I've no doubt that eventually I'll get bored of it but that's life.

Oddly, I much prefer to sit in the back of a taxi watching the world go by with Journey on than I getting out and blowing the shit out of everything with a rocket launcher.

Perhaps I'm gay.

..in fact I was that bored I went out onto the balcony of my penthouse and started sniping the random people walking (and then running about in the street).

What pisses me off is that you start a mission, drive to a location, follow car for what feels like forever then at the end of it have to kill a person or group of people. If you die, you start riiiiight back at the beginning. Fuck that. Life is too short. Save and quit. Play something else.

The DLC could go into a nice backstory that explains Niko's hatred of pigeons...

I'd also like it if they put in the Taxi, Fire and Ambulance missions again... those were a nice time waster.

I am still playing the game and enjoying it, even if the last mission is a pain in the arse.

I have clocked 45 hours. After i finsh the game i may do some stuff but not a lot.

I will try the multiplayer but it does not mean a lot to me

I love driving around with Little Jacob. But... after playing it maybe two evenings, I went back to Oblivion again, planning to complete that before continuing with GTA, for some reason. That probably means that that GTA 4 is, in fact, a little boring - but very well hyped...

What are the numbers for the time spent on Xbox live thingie? CoD4 back on top? That would be really interesting to know, as it says something about how many peapole are actually playing the game...

I will go back to GTA 4 some day. Just have to have some fun first, you know.

Thing is though, there's probably a good reason all the planes and other SA stuff was left out of IV. If it was in, then there'd be nowhere to go for the sequel.

I let everything roll out. Cutscenes, taxi rides, train journeys [the Metro feels bloody well built from a game point of view - feels like a real train sim! If GTA IV was a NY Metro sim, it would get 10/10]. Hell sometimes I'll just walk across Borough Bridge and go "Holy Shite!".

And if that fails to amuse me, I'll steal a Grotti from the showroom across the road [conveniently] from the riverside pad and crash it out of the first-floor window on to a police car.

hello, I'm one of those Xbots referred to by a previous post.

To the young man "SWAM" - Are you just stupid or bitter about buying the wrong console?

Personally, very much looking forward to the DLC. Enjoy not having it on the PS3.

194 pigeons remaining for me 0_o and I really cannot be bothered to find them since its no fun.

I do the the occasional GTA race online for laughs but since there's nothing interesting to do with all missions completed, I think its time to move onto other games (finally).

This is good news. If this game has little replay value, hopefully there will be a healthy second hand market for it, which means I can pick up a cheap copy.

Is anyone else getting a bug where there are no missions after 'Pest Control'? Seems like this is a real problem with the game :(
