GTA IV gets 16-player online?

Rumour rules hood.

Rockstar has suggested that the fourth instalment of its gangland series will support up to 16 of you online.

Word apparently came from a representative for the developer at a PlayStation Holiday Preview Event in Toronto, where Canadian site GamingExcellence (well spotted, Gamespot) was on hand to digest the news.

"The developers were considering the possibility of having an openworld completely unlocked from the start of the game," said the mysterious representative in what we imagine was a thick eastern European accent.

"[Rockstar] is aiming for at least 16 simultaneous players, with more than just usual deathmatch mode."

It is far from concrete, with Rockstar representatives elsewhere refusing to comment on "rumour and speculation". However, we do know that the developer has ambitious online plans this time around, and so far has only quashed rumblings that it will be delivering an MMOG-style option.

It would not be the first Grand Theft Auto game to let you blow each other up online, either, having previously appeared in the "Stories" games on PSP and in the PC version of GTA II.

Perhaps it is among one of the reasons Rockstar pushed the game's launch back from this month to sometime after February next year.

Head over to our Grand Theft Auto IV gamepage for much more information.

If they can nail the multiplayer in the same way RTW did with Crackdown it may well be worth looking at.

I'd still prefer a Crackdown 2 to another GTA though.

It would be cool to have a team deathmatch mode. 1 person driving while another 3 fire out the other windows

Sweet. Imagine meeting up with a few other hoods in the PSHome environment and then wandering off into GTA together for a rumble in New York whilst abusing a few passers by on the way. Fucking A!

You say that but, the worst thing about Crackdown was what GTA did best. Like...killing innocents. The best part of GTA is spending ages with a 5-star rating trying to survive. It's awesome. Couldn't do that in the lovely crackdown...but you could fucking jump over buildings. Oh I dunno now...I want that AND the death of innocents.

"Saints Row 2 will be better."

If they don't fix the irritating missions and improve the combat, this may be true.

@DB2k - Thankyou kind sir, and there was me thinking I was only a partial tool! :p

improve the combat? it was miles better than any GTA IMO, the aiming as simple enough and the weapons had a nice feel to them

if anything, I seriously hope GTA4 uses a similar system rather than lock on

Yeah, same here Egster. San Andreas online with much more than 80+ players is a right laugh. Maybe when this comes to PC (it probably will), someone will make a better online function.

Why this one is only going to be 16 on such a large level is a strange one.

The PSP versions of GTA were NOT online, only local lan. I wish gamesites (not just Eurogamer) would get stuff like this right! :(

I meant if Rockstar don't improve the combat and fix the missions.

It will suck. You won;t be able to aim straight.
