Grand Theft Auto heading to DS News

DS News by Kristan Reed

15 July, 2008

Nintendo and Rockstar have whipped the wrappers of an exclusive Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars game for DS.

It's due out this Christmas and will be set in "a modern day Liberty City", according to Nintendo US sales woman Cammie Dunaway.

Chinatown Wars will also use a custom game engine and have new characters, plus "the same free-ranging gameplay that GTA fans have come to expect".

Rockstar boss Sam Houser reckons the game "will deliver a rich, fast-paced and intense 'Grand Theft Auto' experience that will be truly unique to Nintendo's handheld platform.

"Rockstar Leeds, along with the team at Rockstar North, has built upon a decade of progressive design on Grand Theft Auto, and has created something fundamentally fresh and immersive," he added.

The first official blurb on Chinatown Wars states: "Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is an entirely original entry into the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto series, and brings a new level of interactivity to its sprawling open environments. With the use of the DS touch screen, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise."

Meanwhile, an official website has gone live, revealing little more than the logo and the fact that it will feature wi-fi support. More news soon.

Will be interesting. I wonder how series fans will adapt to what will surely be a reduced experience. And I wonder if it will be goretastic, or if that will be scaled back to appease the DS masses.

I'm living in hope for a return to the top down days, but your comment has reminded me this could be a 3D effort. Any guesses?!

3D, toned down version of the PSP engine. That's my guess.

Can DS handle a town size of GTA IV's Liberty City? Nah, probably there is only Chinatown part of Liberty City, in Alqonguin.

It will be a GTA with cutesy characters hitting each other with pies and if you run over someone in your shell-mobile, he'll let out a Mario sound and just bounce off like a ball.

One of the only good things during Nintendo's conference. But I remember the GBA version of GTA, and aren't holding out much hope for this. Who's making it? is it 3D? they could have at least told us something about it, even if they couldn't show a trailer or anything..

We all need a job like Ms Dunaway's
'A modern day version of Liberty City' indeed. No wait. No guns, bombs or baseball bats. Knives only.

Bang up-to-date.

It's being made by same branch that made the PSP ones, not the developers who made the GBA GTA
