God of War games to get Blu-ray release?

Looks like Sony's thinking about it.

It seems Sony could re-release old PS2 games on Blu-ray in the future - specifically, God of War I and II.

They're thinking about it, anyway, if a new survey on the US PlayStation blog is anything to go by.

The survey asks participants what they'd like to see in the Ultimate God of War III Collector's Edition. Options include the usual gubbins such as t-shirts, art books, soundtracks and YAY behind-the-scenes featurettes.

But as Kotaku points out, there is one intriguing choice listed: "God of War and God of War II on Blu-ray disc." Now you're talking. Or how about the less exciting "God of War and God of War II cinematic movie compilation"? Everyone likes a nice cut-scene.

Sony's probably got a while to gather the survey results and make a decision, as no release date has yet been set for God of War III.

    Well, its a good idea if the price is right. They should simply port it and turn all the AA/AF up. Perhaps retexture.

    FF series, MGS series & Ico and SotC for this treatment too please.

    God of War I and II on the disc would be awesome. I'd like a T-Shirt too. :p
  • wonton #4 3 years ago

    I like my behind the scenes documentary. They are usually genuinely intriguing especially for someone who want to work in the industry in the future.

    Although MGS4's behind the scenes were generally overproduced and uninteresting. Something down to earth and gritty plse.

    Oh and a T-shirt.
  • JohnnyWashnGo #5 3 years ago

    Only include tshirts if they let you choose the size. My bloody persona 4 shirt turned up in one size only, XL !!!
    As a medium build guy, I am tired of being given tents as freebies with games.

    MGS4 behind the scenes.... not seen those, didn't look for them. Are they on the disc?

    I liked the MGS2 docu.

    Just bought a 60GB so not bothered ;p
  • Goodfella #8 3 years ago

    I've got a launch 60gb but I'm still bothered, 3 great games on one disc ftw!
  • aidey6 #9 3 years ago

    Could the ps3 emulate PS2 games without the gubbins inside it (ie EE chip) only the US 60gb one is fully backward compatible, us lot in PAL regions got partial BC instead. If Sony can write this they should put them on PSN and ask Konami about putting Castlevania SOTN in PAL regions too (US gamers have had that since july 07!)

    @Widge

    In the collector's edition.

    Although I don't have it so I just watched it on youtube :)
  • menage #11 3 years ago

    But but, I already own them, and I can't fucking play them in HD.

    Ah well, as long as 3 is awesome I can always hook up the old PS2 to my CRT again.

    I hate game t-shirts btw. Sometimes the design is fine but it always feels like they are 10 sizes to big. If I wante to wear a dress there are prettier ones out there:D
  • makeamazing #12 3 years ago

    Never played GOW1 or 2, and know very little about 3 (though am interested in seeing what it will be like). But even though I am not a fan, anyone could see that this would be a good idea, of course if they can put it on the same disk, they probably could put it on PSN as well, I think as long as they start doing these Playstation exclusives they will be onto a winner.
  • penhalion #13 3 years ago

    How would GOW and GOW2 on blu-ray actually work. As far a I remember backward compatibility has been removed from the latest PS3 machines. They are simply incapable of playing PS2 games.

    Am I to seriously believe that Sony are going to convert GOW1 and 2 to an updated PS3 version or is this just some amazing wishful thinking on Kotakus part.
  • Triggerhappytel #14 3 years ago

    Just fucking patch BC back in, you dolts.

    However, I wouldn't mind being able to play CoO on my PS3, in some form. In fact, I like the series so much I'd probably spunk silly money on getting a collector's edition.
  • Widge #15 3 years ago

    I'd assume they'd port it to run on the PS3 as the non-BC machines wouldn't be able to run it, so a bit of recoding. Hence hoping they'd port and perhaps do a rough and ready enhancement.
  • Widge #16 3 years ago

    And they can't patch in hardware.
  • tap #17 3 years ago

    @aidey6

    The PAL 60GB is only partially BC?

    How so?
  • Ryze #18 3 years ago

    @ tap

    It doesn't contain a PS2 CPU - the Emotion Engine.

    Welcome to 2007.
  • Zomoniac #19 3 years ago

    If they stuck on Blu-Ray just upscaled to 1080p and added character shadows I'd buy it.

    Screenies of GoW1 running on a PS2 emulator upscaled to 1080p. And that's just running off the original game disc with no optimisation.
  • bad09 #20 3 years ago

    Right let me get this straight, they take out B/C only to sell you PS2 on a blu?

    Up yours Sony! Be very careful, I'm starting to consider offing PS3 for a Stand alone Blu player more and more these days....
  • kangarootoo #21 3 years ago

    @bad09

    Well, and to reduce the cost of the console. Or was that bit too obvious for you to bother writing it down?
  • bad09 #22 3 years ago

    @ kangarootoo

    Well that's one explanation. Did it REALLY save that much money? Iin Europe half was emulation anyway, surely a more sensible route would be full emulation? PC can do it - just.

    Besides I still don't believe the official line, to remove something so important not only to enticing all those PS2 owners but also what Sony themselves crowed about "home of the Playstation Brand" PS3, seems so stupid to me. The whole sudden change to "well if you want to play PS2 buy one then" was a bit fishy IMO.

    One of the likely candidates I reckon is the publishers of PS3 games got angry (at first no one was playing PS3 games!) or Sony wanted to keep PS2 separate and alive to compete with little old Wii. Of course these were just rumours so we will never know but to me they a lot more believable than Sony destroying best and strongest USP to entice the existing userbase to PS3 to save a few quid......

    Anyway the point was no way I'm spending more on PS2 games lifted to blu, hell even if they start selling PS2 on PSN I'm not buying until the discs work in machine out of principle! No I'll stick with my 2nd hand PS2 and 2nd hand games until Sony come round.
  • Doctor_What #23 3 years ago

    They'll have to change the 'hammer R2 to open the door' minigame on GOW1 because it was okay with the PS2's button but it just doesn't work well enough with the PS3's triggers.
  • Floppy #24 3 years ago

    Hmm. I'm rather suspicious of all this.

    I can see why Sony took PS2 BC out of the PS3; so that you're more inclined to buy PS3 games, and so they can gradually phase out their PS2 cash-cow.

    For them to bung GOW1 & 2 onto Blu, they would have to re-engineer the game to a PS3 compliant engine, and completely retest the original two games. As porting to a new game engine will inherently bring in new functional issues. Unless they've outsourced the project to a 3rd party, this doesn't strike me as a very likely prospect to me.

    My suspicions are that they have been sandbagging the BC capabilities of the PS3, and will just tap into some of the spare processing power to run BC emulation that I'm positive they've been working on ever since they planned to take the Emotion Chip out.

    The price dropped £125 so removing BC and 2 USB ports did make a bit of a difference. The fact is, if you really wanted BC then you should have bought one when they were available. No use crying about it now and there's nothing stopping you from picking one up on eBay for under £300 with a couple of games and an HDMI lead included.

    @Ryze

    I was calling into question the word 'partial' as it happens so no need to be dickish. That's if you were. Can't tell.

    I'm perfectly aware that the EE chip was removed but the PS2 GPU chip is still there in the 60GB model with the PS3 emulating the PS2 CPU in software.

    I was under the impression that the UK PAL 60GB model played most PS2 games pretty well? So I think using 'partial' is a bit overstated. That's all :)
