GAME unveils online rental service News

PC PlayStation 2 Xbox PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

14 January, 2009

GAME has unveiled a sparkly new online subscription rental service similar to movie (and now game) destinations such as Love Film.

For an unknown but apparently "small" fee, members will be able to rent any two games at once for as long as they like. When the titles are done with they can be posted back and GAME will send another pick from the subscriber's online list.

All formats - Xbox 360, Xbox, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii and DS - will be supported, and the underlying technology will be provided by SwapGame, which does this sort of thing already, only with a less well known brand.

GAME recently reported a sales boost of 16.6 per cent over the Christmas period, in part due to "exceptional demand" for single format titles.

The retailer now offers high street and online game sales, plus downloadable and now rental options. Show off.

Rent for as long as you like? Surely there is a time limit of some kind?

It's 'news' because GAME are running this with Swapgame and Swapgame have a partnership with Eurogamer.

I have a rental service called 'Usenet'. No time limits and it has a vast catalogue of movies, games, music and TV shows. And porn.

it needed to be cheaper than Lovefilm really to make it worthwhile although I suppose with GAME you have more chance of getting a game than a film from your list (of course) and sooner (been waiting months for one game set to High Priority from LF.)

It's actually news because MCV also broke the 'news' today :p.

So, either MCV and Eurogamer are still recovering from the new year party, or half the commenters are wrong :p.

Sounds like you need to set up multiple lists. Specify 1 from your film list and 1 from your game list (or just specify 2 from the game list if you're in a gamey mood) and problem solved.

I get a bit pissed off that Nintendo let Love Film and Game rent their titles, but not Blockbuster.

Rather loose definition of "all formats", although no one is ever going to offer PC games to rent.

As others have said, they have done this for months. Even if you had genuinely just noticed, you could just go to the website to get the prices.

Skooch - you pay a monthly subscription fee, and as long as you keep paying this, you can keep the game as long as you like (as well as swap for other games - just like loveflm etc.).

So GAME are doing rentals, but for a higher cost than my current Lovefilm sub (okay so it's a 3-month trial I'm on, but usual cost is less than £15), and without the added choice od DVDs and Blu-rays? No thanks.

Yesterday we had news of Blizzard launching its re-customisation service for players on European servers, which was a month too late. Today we have news that Game have unveiled a service that has been running for some time now (over a month at least)

I look forward to the in depth round up of E3 2008 that will be posted tomorrow......

Lovefilm is a far better option IMO. You can have a combination account, allowing you to have DVDs and Blu-Rays too.

Even better is their new listing system allowing you to have a disc assigned to a different list of titles. In my case, I have one list/disc for movies, another for TV boxsets and another for games. That way I've always got one of those at home at all times. Awesome stuff.

These schemes have been around for yonks. They all roughly the same, service and price wise. I got L4D from Gamesmonster and have no intention of sending it back anytime soon :-)

@McGeeza - cheers for that, didn't realise you could allocate n# discs to lists. Nice! Just thought it was for sorting out lists clearly with "Manly films for me" and "Soppy shite for the missus" etc

Not a fan of these rental places.

I had a 3 month trial with lovefilm, wasn't all that impressed, kept sending me all the films/games on the bottom of my list. Also tried swapgame for a while, wasn't worth the money IMO, kept getting the games on bottom of my list.

@FaceOmeter - This is very much a 360 site (I own a 360 & so don't mind so much :) ) - While I don't think their reviews are 360 biast, they do seem to favour the XBox system over the PS3 (& definitly the Wii)

I'd suppose with the economic downturn Eurogamer is going where the market is to stay financially viable - and for the type of people who tend to visit gaming sites thats more the teenage-360 crowd?

For Wii, DS or PC stuff (becasue I am that much of a geek) I tend to go elsewhere.
