Frontlines set for January 08, Saints Row 2 confirmed

With Saints Row PS3 canned.

THQ has revealed that it's targeting January 2008 for the release of Frontlines: Fuel of War, while Saints Row for PS3 has been scrapped in order to push resources into production on a sequel for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Speaking in light of strong financials that saw the company's sales top USD 1 billion, CEO Brian Farrell said: "The most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous shipment into a larger installed base next year." The sequel, previously hinted at but until now unconfirmed, is expected to be detailed in the near future.

Frontlines, meanwhile, was unveiled at last year's E3, and we've seen it a couple of times since. It's a next-generation openworld shooter and the first game from Kaos Studios - largely staffed by former staffers at Trauma Studios, the team responsible for the Battlefield Desert Combat mod and elements of Battlefield 2.

THQ's line-up for the next year (when it expects even bigger sales) aims to build on the success of existing titles (with launches for Juiced: Hot Import Nights, Stuntman: Ignition and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts) while introducing new properties to rival some of the big original titles it launched in fiscal 2006 - among which were the aforementioned Company of Heroes and of course S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Too bad they scrapped Saints Row for PS3. Although, if they can make the sequel better in every way, I don't think no one really is going to miss it. Having said that,it's still a game I am going to pick second hand when I get my X360.

So.. when do they start on STALKER 2? :D
  • sanctusmortis #4 5 years ago

Oh God, not a sequel to Saint's Row...

Look, we have Crackdown now, which showed how utterly flawed all the glitches in the game were. We have GTA IV on the way. You're just going to hurt yourselves.

Cool news re Saints Row 2 - they really didn't get the credit they deserved for SR what with all the GTA this-that-and-the-other chatter that was generated ...

No surprise on dropping the PS3 port!

Glad to see there'll be another Saints Row, just hope the ending is better...

"while Saints Row for PS3 has been scrapped in order to push resources into production on a sequel for Xbox 360 and PS3."

Smart move, there. I already have 360 Saints Row, so I wouldn't have missed the almost-bound-to-be-underwhelming PS3 version. I wonder which the lead platform is going to be for SR2?
Definitely looking forward to a new one of those, GTA can wait!

Anyone know when Juiced 2, is due for release?

Juiced 2 is due in September

GTA IV is coming out later this year, so I don't think anybody is going to care for clones by then.

Lots of people happy with the "superior" 360 versions, when the fact they don't own a PS3 makes the effort of trying to compare or imagine how "crappy" the PS3 version would be irrelevant. Meh.

Sorry Sanctus but imho Saint's Row was/is a million miles better than Cackdown.

Juiced 2 is out in September and is currently looking fantastic!

So it's impossible to enjoy Saints Row since Crackdown has come out? I must have missed that memo.

Alternatively they are very different games with their own strengths, I'd certainly rather be driving in the Row than in Pacific City for example.

Actually there might be a market for light-hearted GTA-clones even if GTA IV is just around the corner. I am sure Rockstar will push the narrative and new elements further, which leaves room for games like Saints Row.

Saints Row is great - easily my most played 360 game. That's all I have to say.

    I thought SR was fantastic.

Completed the game in two weeks...

    Great fun.

Must have a mess about in the city again this weekend...!

Saints row was a great game, but i found the world of saints row and the characters very different. The characters felt more down to earth, even with the swearing and whatnot, but the world constantly pushed 18+ childish thing which it never had to. Naming obscene street names, having stupid radio commercials, it wasnt necessary when you had stars like king and the leader of the row.

Thanks, Bi5on for the Juiced 2 info. I really enjoyed the first one - got burned by the betting a bit, though (opponent: "you'll pay for damaging my car!" me: "But you practically drove through me, so why am I the one getting the loss of respect?!";) Hopefully, the crew system will be set up so the AI works together with you during the race in another car, rather than just you playing back seat driver, this time. :)

Obviously they need to wait for GTA IV to find out what they need to put in SRII ;-).

  • Triggerhappytel #20 5 years ago

Frontlines looks hugely generic. It will need to stand out from the crowd, because there is about 74 thousand war FPS in development for next-gen.

"I wonder which the lead platform is going to be for SR2?" - Machetazo

The 360, I'd imagine, mainly because the SR1 engine was built on the 360, and I suspect SR2 will be developed on the same engine again.

    I enjoyed Saints Row.
