Facebook features due in PS3 update

Console to post to FB news feed.

The next PlayStation 3 firmware update will allow you to post Trophy and PlayStation Store activity to your Facebook news feed.

With the advent of firmware 3.10, which is due "soon", developers will be able to code features in their games that post to the news feed as well.

However, the update stops short of full Facebook integration - you will still need to use the web browser to check out Facebook, Twitter and so on. Johnny.

Elsewhere in the update, detailed on the PlayStation blog, we're promised a revamp of the Photo section of the XMB so you can see more photographs.

Finally, the PSN friends list has been modified based on feedback received after last firmware update, and you will now be able change PSN ID colour on the XMB too.

Like we all want people to know we just purchased Flower from the Playstation Store... C'mon we already get flooded with updates from our friends playing farmville etc... Do people really want to know what game i just bought or trophies i have collected, no because the majority of my friends aren't gamers, and i don't think geeky gaming updates will impress the ladies.

Oh and watching the video, it seems we still have a box around our name, only now it's a coloured one. Do these guys not listen to what PS3 owners, who pay good money for their system, actually want!

    @52pickup:

Don't use it then. Simple really.

    Video preview at Engadget.
It's like they didn't learn anything from the Uncharted 2 twitter spamming, this is even worse! But at least they've stopped waiting for ages to offer something the 360 does.

I hope the people who scive off work remember to disable this FB function when they are "ill".

This FaceBook news feed thing you've been able to do for the past 3 years with the 360, by adding the FB app to your profile to track your Achievements and Gamerscore.

Is the exact same thing not already available to link with PSN Trophies?

But at least they've stopped waiting for ages to offer something the 360 does.

This is actually nothing like the 360 Facebook app. At all.

@ Woodnotes - Of course it's not, but they'll be able to tell people who don't know "Xbox 360 has Netflix and Facebook? So do we!".

If you don't want to use it then don't...also the 360 update is a seperate application you have to activate on Facebook site as far as I am aware

Seems like a reasonable addition, if you want it. As for a separate facebook application, why bother when you can access the site just fine using the browser on the PS3? That way you don't need to worry about the app not being up to date when new facebook features are added.

just want Sony to sort the severs out so as it doesn't keep coming up with errors when you try and sync your trophies... I thought it was my PS3 playing up till I read it wasn't just mine...
  • Gregolution #10 2 years ago

I can't believe it.... I want x game voice chat like everyone else and they give me bloody facebook. This is getting ridiculous now Sony. As if I'd want any of my friends and family to know about my trophy updates WTF.
  • The-Bodybuilder #11 2 years ago

Fbook for android on the ps3 then.
  • gjgjg #12 2 years ago

seems like a bit of a scurry to match the 360 update. not that ill use it on either machine. stop wasting time on this stuff guys, more games pls!
  • davisorle #13 2 years ago

Erm.. Those kind of info should be kept on the PSN profile alone like done on XBL. I really dont think that ppl would want they pages spammed with PSN activities on Facebook instead of wall msges from friends etc that have some meaning. Why not just intergrate those heatures on the damn console panel and take your time instead of doing it this way to just scream out you are catching up on the 360 adding Facebook on this update? Its not even actual facebook since you can access it the same way you did before from the inconvient browser that everyone with a PS3 hates using..

Its a fact, really even if i get minus rated like crazy from fanboys cause they will take my post as a negative feedback instead of a helpfull honest opinion , for which i dont give a fuck really so be my guest :)

I'm getting tired of these poor PS3 firmware updates. I've been happy with my switch from 360 to PS3 (due to several hardware failures), but a big area that Sony falls short on is its' firmware compared to Microsoft. Pull your finger out Sony.

I thought the only thing people used facebook for was to see if old school friends have turned bald/fat. Why would bald/fat almost-strangers care if I just got a platinum in lego rock band?
  • aphexstwin #16 2 years ago

im not too arsed about adding networking sites to my consoles. mainly coz im a miserable cunt, i dont even like mobile phones or ppl who text on them: just screams to me that you want to be in contact with your friends but you dont want to see them or hear their voice. i like to meet my friends, but thats me.

on the 360 side of updates, im still wondering when theyre gunna add fast forward/rewind into the music player. on ps3, add more xmb functionality.

Holy crap! Who would have POSSIBLY SUSPECTED that this wouldn't just be a shortcut link to Facebook on the browser, eh, people-who-posted-on-that-earlier-thread!?!? If only we'd engaged our brains EVEN FOR A MOMENT after looking at the screenshot that got released!

    ;)
  • jefranklin18 #18 2 years ago

This update is unsurprising and yes, some will not want it but at the end of day it is not about what a few don't want, it's about providing as much as possible so that people can choose to use or not use it.

The obvious counter argument to the above is the lack of cross-game chat. But I believe that there are bigger issues around it, based on stuff I have read elsewhere.
  • Gregolution #19 2 years ago

@XrustynutsX YOu're missing the point about x game voice chat. It's not about talking to friends in different games necessarily, it's about organising games with your mates. Most games don't engage voice chat until you're in the same lobby, but you often need to communicate to get into the lobby in the first place. It's a needed and long overdue feature and I'm fed up waiting for it.
