EA reveals Fight Night Champion

Due next year on PS3 and Xbox 360.

EA has de-robed a new boxing game called Fight Night Champion, due for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2011.

As the name suggests, the focus is on career mode and building a fighter from zero to hero. And while Fight Night has done well in this area on the past, Champion promises to "break the mould of what is expected in a single-player sports game", EA Vancouver told IGN.

"It's something people won't expect from an EA Sports game," producer Brian Hayes added. "Our lips are sealed for the time-being about that."

A new Full Spectrum Punch Control system will be both the most realistic and most user friendly system the series has ever produced, according to EA.

There are reckoned to be between 60 to 65 boxers on the game disc.

That's all we know for now. Judging by the series' pedigree, however, this should be one to keep a puffy eye on. Kristan Reed dug an 8/10 out for Fight Night Round 4.

    Last one was good but there's room for a lot of improvement. I'm looking forward to a new Fight Night.

    Any bets on Move support?

    Remember the analogue vs. buttons arguments when the last one was released with buttons. Jesus that was a real low point in the forum wars.

    Anyways, I loved the last one, but they need to make the punches more meaty - more like the round 3. And make it harder for people to hook spam.

    @NotSoSlim

    That would make me buy move. That and that alone. I was quite disappointed when they re-introduced buttons.

    Yeah, I was also interested in hearing about Move and Kinect support ... Although I can see why they wouldn't do it, they should definitely have a game like this out with support for these technologies in at least one or two modes, preferably including online. I never liked the boxing games enough with the joypads, and it may well be that you need to change the engine considerably if you want it to work with Kinect/Move, but I definitely won't be playing a joypad boxing game anymore with these technologies coming out.

    Get rid of the glitches from round 4 and im in. Sick of fighting the same style of fighter ie constant lean and block spam mixed with a little spinning(looking like they have been constipated for 3 years). Round 4 when played properly is the best boxing sim ever.

    Hope they do both Move and Kinect support, I think this game could be an interesting case for comparing the two and how they work in practice.

    Oh and while your at it, if they want to put buttons back in why not have an option to filter buttons or stick when fighting online. I myself have always used the stick and find it more "realistic" , or as realistic as you can get using a control pad .

    Fight Night was the first and only boxxing game that I, not only liked, but also got too much into ever since the first one. My guess is that it will be improved visuals etc but also Kinect support for 360 and Move for PS3 each version very well tuned for each hardware. Would be a great idea actually. Having a perfect tittle playable for all shorts of tastes in those options. I know id wanna try the game in all versions.

    And if there is Kinect /Move support then there HAS to be a damn filter. Wouldnt fancy using either of those against a pad using player.

    The thing that sticks out for me about FN Rnd 4 was how slow the fighters moved around the ring. Felt like they were boxing in mud, or had their feet tied together (Rocky 2 style?).
  • merf #13 2 years ago

    hope it gets closer to 3 than 4 as I thought 4 wasn't a good game, so stiff and unresponsive with jab spamming all the time.

    If you were using Move or Kinect, you'd either have to drastically reduce round times and the amount of rounds or compromise on the style of fighting and the number of shots an opponent throws.
    Keeping it as it is would be incredibly tiring for anyone, no matter how fit they are. Factor in the average size of someone who plays videogames (morbidly obese) and you're looking at a world of hurt.

    FN4 was a bit of a disappointment. It just felt like the fighters weren't on earth, the movement and punches were so sluggish that there's no way there was a full gravity going on. Everything else about it was awesome though. Add a little more snap to the punches, remove the weights from the fighters' boots and it's a damn good game.

    @Lukus

    An option to customise your own rounds and round times perhaps? Could be a nice little boxing sim.

    This is probably the only boxing game where I've gone through the career mode once and created just one boxer. Good to hear they are focusing on career mode in this new game. Last year's career mode was basic even though they said it would be better than Round 3's. Online was full of cheats spamming hooks to the body and that could be really annoying.

    They also need to add more boxers. How can they not have Mayweather? Also, the weight divisions need to be sorted as well. For classic fighst like Haglar v Hearns you'd have to fight in two different weight classes. Should be an option to choose the weight they fight at if you've got fighters that have moved up or down a weight.

    Interested to hear more on this. I only had Round4 as it came with my PS3 but i thought it was really good, especially the controls. I usually devolved into spamming hooks, alternating left and right as if trying some crazy swimming routine.

    It used to bug me that i couldnt set up any match between the named fighters I wanted though. They need to have an option to unlock that weight class restriction imo.

    Boxing is a sport with skill, strategy, stamina, strength, speed, movement, technique and knowledge of other fighters in the fight ; not forgetting rules - MMA is nothing more then thug thumping, until one drops.
