DF blog: New Xbox 360 dash full details

The seemingly unabridged changelog.

Microsoft has started to open up the new Xbox 360 dashboard update to the great unwashed via its latest preview programme, and has released a comprehensive list of new features contained within the update to complement the abridged version we saw 12 days ago.

The list is somewhat disappointing in that many of the big features touted at this year's E3 are yet to be introduced. So there's not a hint of last.fm, Facebook or Twitter support. Xbox 360 Games on Demand is still "coming soon" despite a listing, and the "instant on" 1080p movie streaming we talked about has still yet to implemented. More than that, a great many of the new features are currently for US gamers only (the party enhancements, puzzlingly so).

Rather helpfully though, Microsoft has released a comprehensive list of what has been changed, and with deft use of cut and paste buttons, you can read all about it below. The user ratings are likely to become very popular very quickly, while the option to override the digital handshake between console and display will allow increased compatibility and marginally superior performance on a range of HDMI and DVI screens.

There's sure to be many more under-the-hood tweaks, changes and enhancements, so if anything crops up once we go hands-on, we'll be sure to let you know.

Parties - (Available Now, US Only)

Everyone loves to Party! Check out the new and improved party reconnections and streamlined party invites.

  • Party Reconnections - If a user is disconnected from a party inadvertently, they will be automatically reconnected to the party without any user interaction
  • Streamlined Party Invites - Invites are now just a click away! Never again will you have to navigate through multiple screens to get all your friends together.

Account Management- (Available Now, All Regions)

Been an Xbox LIVE member for a while? Check out some of the new features we've added just for you.

  • Gold Member Veterans - Been here long? Show it off! Anyone looking at your gamer card will now know how long you’ve been an Xbox LIVE Gold member. And who knows, there might be other perks for you, too. Thanks for sticking around!
  • Subscription Notification - If your Xbox LIVE subscription is about to run out, you will now be notified when you sign into Xbox LIVE. No more surprises the next time you hop in to frag your friends.
  • Fixing Invalid WLID's - If the Winodws Live ID (WLID) you provided has expired, you will now be prompted to update it the next time you sign into Xbox LIVE. (This feature coming later in the Preview)

Account Recovery - (Available Now, All Regions)

Many changes have gone into the account recovery process to speed it up and to increase reliability.

Avatars - (Available Now, All Regions)

Avatars have seen lots of love! Check out the new Marketplace and Avatar Props.

  • Avatar Props - You can now equip your avatar with animated items they can carry around and interact with.
  • Avatar Marketplace - Reflect your sense of style with the new Avatar Marketplace. Download and purchase premium items, including branded apparel from your favorite fashion labels and Xbox 360 games.

Netflix - (Available Now, US Only)

Now you can watch movies with your friends and find new movies to add to your Instant Queue without leaving your seat.

  • Party Watch - Catch a show with your friends! You can now bring your party into Netflix and watch a movie or TV show together.
  • Find Content Faster - You can now browse through New Releases and other genre lists based on the types of shows you’ve previously watched, all from the comfort of your couch.
  • Improved Playback Experience - Improvements have been made to ensure a better experience when adapting to changing network conditions.
  • Improved Presence - Richer information is now displayed in the Friends channel and in the Guide showing what you and your friends are watching.

Video Display Options – (Available Now, All Regions)

Various improvements have been made to make it easier for you to see your game in the highest resolution possible when using an HDMI connection.

  • Display Discovery - This feature allows you to override audio and/or video formats independent of the display's capabilities.
  • How it works - By default, the console uses the information provided by the display (via its EDID) to determine the audio and video capabilities of the device. However, often the data is invalid or malformed, hence compatibility issues are encountered. When disabling display discovery, the EDID of the display is ignored, thereby, enabling the audio and video settings to be overridden with the desired format regardless of display support.
  • Who should use it? - The Display Discovery feature is available for DVI and HDMI connections in the Display settings section of System Settings in the dashboard. Please note that Display Discovery should only be disabled if audio and/or video related compatibility issues are encountered - otherwise, the output quality may be compromised.
  • Monitor Support - Additional monitor resolutions are now available for HDMI connections.

User Ratings – (Available Now, All Regions)

User ratings help you find content that other people think is awesome!

  • How it works - Every piece of game content on Marketplace can now be rated using a 5-star system. Just open up the details on what you want to rate and chose the Rate button. Each time you press the Rate button, you add one star to your personal rating.
  • Sort by Ratings - Now you can easily find great games that you might have missed out on. Just visit Browse All in either the Games or Video Marketplace and twist over to the Top Rated games to see what everyone’s been talking about.

Games on Demand – (Coming later in the Xbox LIVE Update Preview, All regions)

Enjoy the convenience of finding and buying new games right from your couch. You can now download full Xbox 360 games over Xbox LIVE.

  • Purchase - You can purchase a game through the Game Marketplace and download it directly to your console. This purchase is also stored in your purchase history so you can delete it and download it again if you run out of space.
  • Manuals - Game manuals will be available for these games on Xbox.com so that you will still have access to the full manual that comes with the boxed version of the game.
  • Digital Rights Management (DRM) - Games on Demand titles follow the same licensing rights as all other forms of downloadable content. Users are granted a user license that will allow the purchasing Gamertag to play the game on any console, and a console license that will allow anyone to play on the console that the content was originally downloaded to. No physical disc is required to play these games!

Improvements to UI – (Available Now, All Regions)

Some parts of the dashboard have been slightly re-organized to make it easier to find the things you’re looking for.

  • Indie Games - We listened to our community and have decided to change Xbox LIVE Community Games to Xbox LIVE Indie Games. We feel this new name better represents the independent spirit of these titles. User ratings are also available for Indie Games, which will allow you to share your rating for a game and use ratings from others to find new content. We hope these changes will help people discover more games they love.
  • Achievement Browser - You can now launch a game directly from the Achievement browser making it even easier for you to max out your Gamerscore.
  • Achievement Tracking - A new All Games view inside the Profile panel includes a summary of Achievements earned across all the games played and shows off all your completed games.
  • Achievements - Check out the changes to the Achievement browser while playing a game. It’s now much easier to read through all the achievements so you can rack up the Gamerscore faster.
  • Streamlined Navigation - New entry points in the Dashboard for Active Downloads, Redeem Code, Auto Sign-In (via Profile), Create Profile, and Recover Gamer Tag, so that these features are much easier to find.
  • Voice Messages - When recording a voice message, a warning is now displayed if no audio is detected so you don’t accidentally send blank messages to your friends.

Console Settings – (Available Now, All Regions)

We’ve reorganized the Console Settings menu with fewer, more intuitive categories.

  • Memory - Time stamps now appear in the Memory Area. This is particularly handy when managing saved games.
  • Friends List Sorting - It’s now much easier to find your friends! Sort your friends list by Activity, Gamertag, or Online Status (default). Just press the Y button while you’re viewing the friends list in the Guide to change the sorting order

Better than nothing I suppose. Any improvement's an improvement.

What happened to the Sky+ thing which was promised?
  • AphoticCosmos #2 3 years ago

    @systems

I believe that Sky+ comes later in the year.
  • paul_haine #3 3 years ago

None of this is very sexy.
  • altitude2k #4 3 years ago

I've had my Xbox Live account since the beta testing stage on the original Xbox, so I should hope this "veterans" whatsit will provide me with serious prizeage.
  • Xerx3s #5 3 years ago

No word on the promised enhancements for the slow menu's?
  • systems #6 3 years ago

@AphoticCosmos - good stuff. I was hoping it was still in as my old Sky+ box hasn't got long left to live. But then again, nor has my 360.
  • Xerx3s #7 3 years ago

Lol, I ask the most impotent question that this article completely fails to ask and I get a minus one. Good to see that the voting system isn't being abused to fight out one sided vendetta's by petty small minded individuals. Oh.
  • OllyJ #8 3 years ago

I agree, the slow menu really kills the dashboar....wait...load...click....wait....

I like your posts, you seem like a good guy. But I'm giving you a -1 after reading this because you actually care, which would make you no better than them!

    That's your problem. Impotence.

    :D

A bit of an underwhelming update in all honesty with some superfluous additions but there's some useful tools there, some of which are long overdue like the Fixing Invalid Windows ID thing, which was an issue reported well over a year ago. Still it's a system update and as such there isn't any requirement to add anything so I'm certainly not complaining as such.

The killer for me though and the one thing that desperately needs addressing is the lethargic feel of the dashboard, especially when trying to download any content from the Marketplace. The upto 30 second long delay while the download link becomes ungreyed is painfully tedious and I'm on a 24 Mbps connection! Yet I can stream Marketplace videos straight from the Showcase section fine. Also the Games Library is often slow to appear and sending messages to Friends occasionally causes the dashboard to freeze for 10-15 seconds. I've a funny feeling that those issues will remain unfixed because they never existed prior to NXE, not on my Xbox 360s anyway.

I have no such issues with my PS3, Wii or PC either, all of which share the same wireless connection (although not all at the same time I might add).

    @Darren:

Turned on Xbox this morning, everything running super quick for me. Marketplace, friends list, everything really really quick. 6.5Mb connection to BT. Must be your ISP.

Funny how they had the Ofcom thingy yesterday and this morning everything works insanely quickly...
  • Danoxth #15 3 years ago

Wonder if these new "Video Display Options" will correct the problem I have when playing the 360 via a computer monitor (it nevers goes to the full resolution of the monitor only 1280x1024 at max).
  • rotmm #16 3 years ago

    @Xerx3s,

You'll be pleased to know that the menu's zip along nicely now, with little to no delay getting the download links, etc.

So even though it wasn't specifically mentioned in the update, menu speed is clearly improved.
  • dllord #17 3 years ago

    What a fucking shit update!
  • Sonic_D #18 3 years ago

None of this crap is that useful, fixing the freezing dashboard issue would be.
  • Xerx3s #19 3 years ago

    "That's your problem. Impotence. "

ARE YOU MOCKING MY IMPOTENCE! IF ONLY I WAS HALF THE MAN YOU ARE... oh
  • Xerx3s #20 3 years ago

rotmm: Cheers. It's the most important thing that this update was supposed to do. I couldn't give a rat's arse about the rest. Before the NXE I used to browse the dash/marketplace every couple of days. After it I could only muster the effort to browse it every couple of months when something extremely good was released. Waiting 2 minutes after every action is just utter shite.

I can't believe that DF, known for benchmarking, left this most important piece of benchmarking info out of the article.
  • rotmm #21 3 years ago

    @Xerx3s,

It was never 2 mins for me, more like 20-30 seconds max, but it was still noticable and annoying.

I'm just hoping that it's a true speed update and not just a (positive) side-effect of being in the preview programme and going through a different dedicated server.
  • Rizob #22 3 years ago

So they still haven't added the option for Gold members to sign in on the 'My Xbox' tab yet, and didn't think to add the option to make the blue menu tabs opaque so we can actually see the premium themes we paid for? Well that sucks.

Also, has anyone been accepted into the preview programme yet? I haven't had an email or anything from them.
  • rotmm #23 3 years ago

I have, as per message above.
  • Bravestinsane #24 3 years ago

I know a lot of you are not impressed but i just like monitor support, better than full HD resolution here i come..upscaling junk lol. Part reconnects are a bonus because the amount of times ive has a party crash out on me its annoying. Sorting friends lists and rating content is also a bonus i like.

Ive had a gold account for years, but i usually have a day of silver inbetween subs when i have to go buy a new sub code. Will i still be a veteren i have i apparently been a member for only 1 month -.- .

On the whole i like the updates, like most people have mentioned a more streamlined dashbored that is quicker would make me more happy than any update they through at me.

Personally i dont have sky so not interested in that but would be nice to here something after all the US do have NetFlix
  • seasidebaz #25 3 years ago

i just like monitor support, better than full HD resolution here i come

It doesn't work like that. The highest res you'll get out of the 360 is 1920x1080.
  • Machiavellian #26 3 years ago

Maybe my expectations are a lot lower than most people but I just do not get hyped up for Updates on the 360 or PS3. Reading the list of things coming to the PS3 update, I see a few that will be useful.
    Sorting Friends - useful
Ratings for all games - useful
Party invitations and reconnection - very useful
    Subscription Notification - useful

There is nothing earth shattering with these updates but then again I never remember anything earth shattering from any update. I believe these are nice improvements which is more than I can ask for.
  • Syrette #27 3 years ago

Surely improving the speed of the dashboard would just come under general bug fixes, and wouldn't be listed as a feature?

Wouldn't it go without saying that they'll also be improving the reliability of the dashboard along with other miscellaneous changes?
  • Alkeno #28 3 years ago

Sooo, will I be able to send information to the TV on it's native resolution at last? HD-Ready displays usually have non-standard 1360x768 resolution...
    Edited by 1 at 29/07/09 @ 20:28
  • seasidebaz #29 3 years ago

    @Machiavellian:

The 360's dash is already great for launching games, though. And buying things. But then again that's what Microsoft want. This generation's top games machine.

The PS3 missed some features that some people think are "essential" (without them even knowing why), but Sony generally do add value with FW updates. With MS it's simply refining what was already a pretty good system to begin with.
  • seasidebaz #30 3 years ago

    @Alkeno:

    I'm already running the 360 at 1360x768
  • Retroid #31 3 years ago

The monitor settings should be very useful, as using one of my 360s on a monitor (with an HDMI > DVI-D adaptor) means it refuses to run 50hz stuff (like several BC Xbox games I have) which is bloody annoying. I'd used a component > VGA adaptor previously which ran 50hz games fine on it.
  • Alkeno #32 3 years ago

seasidebaz you made me happy today... twice. I googled for info and guess who answered my question? It was you back in december 2008! (check http://ww w.eurogamer.net/forum_thread_po... It's a small world, Google makes it smaller.

So I followed your advide, changed the HDMI port to the one that also was DVI compatible, chose optimal... and it selected 1360x760. I ran Street Fighter IV and it looked the same as before, but I got the satisfaction of knowing the resolution is matched ;-)
  • seasidebaz #33 3 years ago

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'm useful after all ;)

Glad to be of service Alkeno!
  • Alkeno #34 3 years ago

You won't believe it, but you helped me to figure out another issue that was bothering me big time... Once upon a time I was able to sync my laptop with the TV in 1360x760 and it looked sharp and crisp, so I used it as a second monitor when I needed it.

You can guess the rest of the story. I must have swapped the cables on day (probably after cleaning, bloody dust!) and I was no longer able to sync at that resolution, having to settle for 720p and thus making it unusable as a PC monitor. I tried reinstalling the drivers, plugin and unplugin... many many times. I gave up at the end, never realizing that I changed the HDMI port in the back of the TV (or knowing that it DID make a big difference).

I don't know who designed the HDMI specs, but they are a bunch of idiots. They had the chance of making the definitive multimedia link and blew it big time. DRM, DVI compliance, 1.2 vs 1.3... it all ends up in incompatible hardware, stupid A/V receivers with HDMI connectors that don't decode the HDMI signal... What a headache.
  • photoboy #35 3 years ago

I got the email telling me I'd been accepted into the preview this morning, but since I'm not in the US this preview is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. And it's only marginally more exciting if you are in the US.
  • Brogan #36 3 years ago

Need to bring sky before the end of the ashes, pisses me off having to drag my arse from my bed to the sofa. Clearly all life is suffering
  • XdarXideX #37 3 years ago

I just got accepted into the Beta and did the update this morning. It says the Party based improvements are available for all regions, not US only.

I think it's a decent enough update. The Avatar store is pretty cool, with the props and clothes based on games (such as a Guybrush and LeChuck costume for Monkey Island, or Halo based clothes and an RC Warthog) but the prices for some items are a bit high (up to 340msp i think). The Trophies/Awards you can give your Avatar to hold should be cool... hopefully developers will throw out little updates so we can have some based on previously completed achievements... such as the Mile High Club on COD4!

I like the big fat "5" on my gamercard too! I wonder if 5 years counts as "Veteran".
