Deleted Monkey Island content found News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

10 November, 2009

Pages of cut dialogue from the original Secret of Monkey Island game have been unearthed and published on the internet.

The man responsible is Adam Bormann, designer of the Special Edition that flooded our Xbox Live Arcade with nostalgia this summer passed.

"One of the things I worked on was the new hint system, which meant a lot of digging through the old original SCUMM source code to figure out how Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and company were tracking the state of different puzzles and whether Guybrush had completed something or not," wrote Bormann on the LucasArts Workshop blog (spotted by Kotaku).

"One thing I quickly noticed was that Ron and Tim had left a lot of notes in the code, explaining why things were the way they were, or putting a date when a certain bug was fixed. This was fascinating to see and read.

"The other thing I noticed is that when they made some changes, they left the original versions of the code in there, but commented out, so that it wouldn’t be used," he added.

The extended dialogue options include extra lines by Fester Shinetop, Guybrush, Elaine, Otis, Meathook, Carla, Stan and Lemonhead. It's worth a read.

Head to the LucasArts Workshop for the full post.

And that's why I never delete code, someday some geek will stumble on my commented out beta code, laugh and say, how the hell did he get this trainwreck finished, let alone released. That's the dream anyway.

Wow - most of that text was brilliant - certainly better than almost all the dialogue in MI 3 & 4!

Amusing, but you can definitely tell why they cut it.

I'm enjoying replaying Monkey Island so much. It's vindicated my nearly 20-year-old belief that it's the best game ever made (with the possible exception of its sequel).

What was wrong with 3? I'd consider that better than the second game, and although the fourth game had many, many problems, a lot of the dialogue was still pretty good.

Some people just go into a fanboy rage and assume anything not made by Ron Gilbert must automatically be crap, and are unable to look beyond that.

Does anyone else feel despair that 20 years ago these great games with great dialogue and story were being made and present day we have to put up with absolute drivel in terms of story and dialogue?

Love Monkey island so much so sad when they try to re invent it. It should have never gone past game 3 imo.

"Special Edition that flooded our Xbox Live Arcade with nostalgia" Yeah. Didn't come out on PC then, did it guys? ;)

But damned, these are exciting times for a Monkey Island fan. And I'm actually giddy about this, how sad is that? :D
