Cryostasis, MOW, NecroVision delayed

505 Games holds PC trio back a week.

505 Games' PC threesome from 1C Company - Men of War, NecroVisioN and Cryostasis - has been pushed back a week to 27th February.

Men of War is a real-time WWII strategy game from the makers of Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, which was favourably received back in 2004. Allied, Russian, German and Japanese sides are playable, and action takes place across North Africa and the Eastern Front.

NecroVisioN is quite dodgy: a first-person shooter set in World War I, featuring soldiers turned zombie and a mad German scientist who has made a giant robotic scorpion. There's a trailer on Eurogamer TV illustrating all this.

Finally, Cryostasis has players investigate an old nuclear ice-breaker shipwrecked in the Arctic Circle, and us a Mental Echo ability to relive the memories of the dead. You can also be a cow. Further evidence can be uncovered in our Cryostasis preview.

NecroVision is supposed to be cack - gamesTM gave it 4/10 in this month's issue for example - but I've seen the tech demo of Cryostatis with the PhysX support and that looks intriguing and reminded me of the boat level from the original Far Cry on the PC.

I tried the Men of War demo last night too... seemed like a poor man's Company of Heroes to me with absolutely DIRE voice-acting and dodgy A.I.

That's not really fair, since it's a sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of WWII, which was awesome, out long before CoH, and ripped off by the latter. ;)

Wasn't too impressed with the Men of War demo either (and the voice-acting is indeed probably the worst I've ever heard), but Rock Paper Shotgun is rather impressed with the game. Allegedly, the scale is rather massive in later levels.

@UncleLou - Well, yeah, that probably is a tad unfair and I didn't play it for long admittedly but my first thought on playing it was that it was a cheap clone of Company of Heroes, a game which I deem to be the finest WWII RTS ever made. With that mindset it's not really surprising that I didn't think much to Men of War really.

@Darren - I've yet to read a review for NecroVisioN, though I did find the demo they released largely enjoyable, and imagined it would get better when the weaponry available bulked out - you have a choice of two pistols (an authentic rifle if you grab it from the fallen soldier originally brandishing it) bayonet attachments, a hand knife, and - a shovel! At the right price, I'd get it, as there are some good elements, which unfortunately, didn't always seem to gel.

I'm surprised it's been held back a week, though. WWI can't be a bad setting, and seemed well-realised in the demo, another appealing thing was the frantic nature of the combat. Multiple enemies get right up in your face, and there was a good level of variety. The guy's boot used to knock back the swarms, if they're allowed to amass is inspired, though I understand, nothing really new to the genre, lol! It's not top-tier, but it didn't appear to be a disgrace to its style of game, either.

I enjoyed the Necrovision demo. It was like a pastiche of nearly every single FPS subgenre.

Played through my review code of Necrovision this week. I'm still not sure what I made of it.

I'm quite looking forward to Cryostasis as I enjoy a bit of horror, but there's practically zero noise being made about it anywhere.
