City of Heroes gets a facelift

Issue 17 brightens things up.

Old-timer MMO City of Heroes has had a facelift and gained reflective water and surfaces, real-time shadows and snazzy lighting.

The changes come with update Issue 17, subtitled Dark Mirror and available now.

Another addition is the opportunity to fight yourself in Doppelgänger form as part of a new story arc. We're also promised new story-telling methods, Mission Architect improvements and animated tails. The latter has apparently been asked for time and time again.

Issue 17: Dark Mirror arrives ahead of the second full-sized City of Heroes expansion Going Rogue. As the name suggests, this allows players to turn evil. Going Rogue is "coming soon" and has no concrete date.

Get a glimpse of Issue 17: Dark Mirror's graphical tweaks in the trailer below.

That certainly looks like a nice improvement - I always liked the design of the city in CoH but felt the execution let it down somewhat, as everything was very 1980s flat-shaded.

It's too bad CoH is so repetitive, as the early levels are a blast and I'm sure I'm not the only one who spent more time creating new toons than actually playing.

@Iok: absolutely. I got into it a month ago and I enjoy it for what it is - a pre-WOW MMO that's repetitive, but has probably the best character creator I've ever used (A 7" posh gentlemen Tanker, a Legion of Doom-style biker Mastermind, etc), along with the architect. The settings are ultimately generic (same maps and objects) but it's all down to the writing - hell, I played one arc where I had to rescue kidnapped dogs from an international team of evil dog-nappers.

Yeah I kinda annoyed my mates at keep re-joining their group with a level1 character of ever increasing stupidity.

@iokthemonkey: Why not give Age of Conan another try now that the fanbois come out from the woodwork, together with a brand-spanking new expansion!
