AVP online MP demo out tomorrow

On PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

SEGA's announced that an Aliens vs. Predator demo will be available tomorrow on PlayStation Network, Steam and Xbox Live Marketplace.

This sampler shows the online multiplayer side of the game and allows all three species - human, alien, predator - to be played, but only on the Refinery map and in Deathmatch mode.

The full game's out on 19th February here in Europe.

This is what will happen. Plus, Predators.

I'm looking forward to seeing how good this actually is, considering Rebellion's last game.
  • Markitron #2 2 years ago

I really want this to be not-shit
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #3 2 years ago

    What score is not-shit? 6?
  • Markitron #4 2 years ago

Id say a Eurogamer 7 is the international standard for not-shit
  • Waffleaber #5 2 years ago

I'm still clinging to hope this'll be good. Multiplayer only demo isn't what i'm looking for though.
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #6 2 years ago

Is there a well-known gesture to go with the international standard for not-shit 7/10? Is it a thumbs-up? A wink? A cheeky grope? Cheeky.
  • Dizzy #7 2 years ago

Ohhhh this better be good or I am going to cry *
Only 8 is good on EG, we all know that.

    * or play ME2

  • bad09 #8 2 years ago

Yeah found out last week it coming cannot wait to try it tomorrow been watching vids all week, and seeing as ME2 is now on hold and BS2 has been bumped way down the list AvP is my first purchase of 2010. Yay!

  • speedjack #9 2 years ago

Err... are there bots with this or is it online only ?
  • Triggerhappytel #10 2 years ago

I'm more interested in seeing how the single-player is shaping up, as I played the multiplayer at the EG Expo. Not matter how many times Rebellion try to reassure us, I played Shellshock 2 and Rogue Warrior, so I need a lot of convincing with this.

Looking forward to it, but it might have to play second fiddle to BF: BC2 and Heavy Rain demos tomorrow.

    I need this game!

There are 3 campaign modes (one for each class: human, Predator and Alien) and 8 multiplayer modes. It's also by the team who made the classic PC game in 2000 (which is still £2.99 on Steam and now has multiplayer). It's got to be good, surely?
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #12 2 years ago

Sorry - it's online multiplayer only.
  • Gearskin #13 2 years ago

    The Eurogamer demo was fun.
  • Whizzo #14 2 years ago

'Game over, man! Game over!' is probably what I'll be saying when I finish playing the demo.
  • Doctor_What #15 2 years ago

I hear the survivor mode is the best of the multiplayer, but I guess deathmatch will give a decent taste of how the different characters feel.
  • HappyChimp #16 2 years ago

£31 at The Hut with the 10% off code - blue10 (*today only* I think).

Might see what the demo is like, and kill the pre-order if it sucks (hope not, videos so far look ace)
  • Doctor_What #17 2 years ago

Hey Bertie, was post #7 a sneaky way of saying way of saying 'I've played this and it's definitely not shit'? :)
  • DoctorZoidberg #18 2 years ago

Half the retards on here think anything that doesn't get a 10 is shit.

Personally, I think anything over a 5 is well worth a go. Surely if a game is "shit" it would get a 1 or 2. 3 and 4 are poor but you never know in my eyes.

The good thing about this is I only really want to be a marine, so I won't get caught up with all the idiots trying to be the aliens or predator.
  • minusblindfold #19 2 years ago

Alright Bertie...spill the beans...what score did ye give it?
  • Golgo #20 2 years ago

Why is playing an alien or predator for 'idiots', Zoidberg?
Haven't you had enough with the hot marine action with every other action game since Noah stepped out of the ark?
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #21 2 years ago

Haha. No no, I'm not giving off cryptic messages about the score. I don't know when the review's due, actually. I hope soon - the closer to release date the more suspicious I get. Probably next week or early on the week of release.
  • M_of_the_sys #22 2 years ago

    Dear God/Jesus/Santa

Please make this be better than it was at the Expo.

    Love and kisses,

  • ChthonicEcho #26 2 years ago

    @DoctorZoidberg

I commend you. You're in denial and the game hasn't even been released yet. That's quite an achievement.
  • minusblindfold #27 2 years ago

Battlefield BC and BC2 multiplayer demos were fine. Bionic Commando and Lost Planet not so good...
  • Bertie Verified Senior Staff Writer, Eurogamer.net #28 2 years ago

Ok Bertie...just tell us what you've mostly been eating this week and we'll let you off...

I've eaten a lot of cottage cheese.
  • mingster #29 2 years ago

Lets hope they've sorted the balancing out for multiplayer
  • spatss #30 2 years ago

I really want this to be good.
  • MrE26 #31 2 years ago

Was looking forward to the demo of this, given that this should be a completely awesome shit-your-pants scary single-player experience dripping with tension & atmosphere.

Not that we'll get to find any of that out now, since the demo is just a simple fucking deathmatch map.
  • Murton #32 2 years ago

No single player demo, does not bode well in my opinion. I guess that means I'll be waiting on the review to find out if this as good as the originals or something more like Shellshock or Rogue Warrior.

When does the review embargo end for this? Please say it's before release day...
  • IneptPercy #33 2 years ago

From what I can tell from info so far the biggest problem for the consoles is performance. As a PC gamer this isn't an issue.

I won't bother with a multi-player demo, I just want to look around without being shot/stabbed/vapourised/mamed all the time.

As with most if its a 7+ plus on the ratings then it will be more than playable, as somebody who nearly wets myself when I hear that signature gun noise followed by and alien scream I am sure I will enjoy this unless its completely broken.

Play best deliver this one time!!

    Lets ROCK!!!!
  • sneetch #34 2 years ago

    @Golgo
Why is playing an alien or predator for 'idiots', Zoidberg?

Obviously they're for idiots because he doesn't want to play as them.

It's "logic" at it's finest, purest and most spurious: if I do something, then it's cool, if I don't to do it, it's idiotic.

You can replace cool with any positive quality and idiotic with any negative one and the same rule still applies.
  • jonbwfc #35 2 years ago

@Murton : "When does the review embargo end for this? Please say it's before release day..."
Any game that has reviews embargoed until after release day can fuck right off right now.
  • DoctorZoidberg #36 2 years ago

Why is playing an alien or predator for 'idiots', Zoidberg?

Sorry I didn't mean everyone who plays them. What I was trying to say is that I think you'll get a lot of people who will squiny and kick off that they can't be the predator (only one at a time i heard). My own fault, I'm not tarring everyone with the same brush!

And at @Golgo, I think playing marines is the best way to get the scope of the game. Aliens is a survival film (and game) and in my opinion, the best way to get the "underdog" and "weakest" is to be the marines.
  • bodypopper #37 2 years ago

The single player is spread over three campaigns/species each of which plays differently so the devs would have to give away a level of each to keep all the whingers happy which is quite generous and could spoil the story. And people would still moan about not having the multiplayer as well.
The words moon and stick spring to mind
This way you get to find out what each species is like to control It's a taster which is what demos are supposed to be.
Personally I'd like a survival mode demo but then there are only two levels for that out of the box I hear.

Please pardon my own narkiness, I prefer playing as marines myself.

Any game that has reviews embargoed until after release day can fuck right off right now.

In recent memory I can only think of one major release where the review embargo was maintained until release day and that's MW2. Now the anticipation behind that title was enough so that they could get away with it, not sure if I could say the same for AvP. I really want this to be good but unless it gets a glowing review I shall be relying on a family member or close friend to act as a guinea pig and try it for me before I buy it.
  • Anthony_UK #41 2 years ago

Looking forward to trying this, looking at the previews though this is could be either...

    a) The greatest thing ever
    b) Total mess
  • laharl80 #42 2 years ago

I really hope this game is as good as it looks.I'll be interested to see how they managed to make playing as the marines a viable option.
  • Bleedingplums #43 2 years ago

I can't wait. I'd literally rip off my own balls to play this game.

If I couldn't just wait for the 19th obviously
  • ducksmuggler #44 2 years ago

Mm I have a bad feeling about this ...
  • orpheus #45 2 years ago

so much potential.. and tomorrow we find out if it's a big pile of gash or awesome.

    i want awesome. oooooo anticipation
  • drumbaby #46 2 years ago

  • makeamazing #47 2 years ago

I am in it for the Single player experience only (story etc)... but the MP should give you an indication if its going to be a total mess or not... so for me, its a good test :)
  • Deckard1 #48 2 years ago

Ive read 2 different previews that have mentioned how bad the graphics are - one said they were "amateur" and the other said they were "last gen" which is a bit bit worrying.

Game still looks great, but if its ugly it can spoil the atmosphere a bit. Alien, Aliens and predator are 3 of my favourite movies so I'm praying to god that this is gonna be good. Even though he doesn't exist.
  • DAN.E.B #49 2 years ago

the footage ive seen looked impressive, if this isnt great i will be really dissapointed
been really looking forward to this!

  • Lusterpurge #50 2 years ago

I'll admit that I played the multi-player demo of AVP2 for 2 years before they shut down all the servers. I found it more fun than the full game, actually. It was a bit more straightforward and balanced.
  • actionfitz #51 2 years ago

been playing the Original AVP after nabbing it cheap off steam...
Fucking marines... first level... couldn't finish it, as I was in work and without a change of underpants... :(
Heheh, why is it that i still get freaked out by low poly aliens and that terrifying motion detector bleeping?!
perhaps im just a big jessy :/
  • Wempler #52 2 years ago

And I am completely unable to find any games. I'm sick of shitty match-making. Give me a server browser, damn it!
  • Boomerang #53 2 years ago

Come on then, anyone played the Steam MP demo? Thoughts please!
  • orpheus #54 2 years ago

Yeah wish the damn thing would appear on Live already!
  • MrE26 #55 2 years ago

I've got the PC demo but it just sits on 'searching for games.'
  • Dark_Stranger #56 2 years ago

is this purely MP or is there an offline campaign?
  • Bulbatron #57 2 years ago

I can't understand why some people seem determined that this is going to be shit. Maybe it will be, but would a bit of optimism really hurt? I'm a bit surprised to hear that the graphics aren't supposed to be very good. I thought this footage looked great:

    [link url=http://www .youtube.com/watch?v=cMQ_Z7_seCk

    ]http://ww w.youtube.com/watch?v=YZD73t_-4...[/link]

Admittedly, it's only the marine gameplay, but I thought it looked really good and really atmospheric.
  • bad09 #58 2 years ago

"Come on then, anyone played the Steam MP demo? Thoughts please!"

    Bloody fantastic!
  • orpheus #59 2 years ago

Now up on UK XBOX Live Marketplace website :)
  • Amgzone #60 2 years ago

Still not up on PSN :(
  • curtlikesmeat #61 2 years ago

Won't even bother with a deathmatch demo tbh, still, like someone else said I will get lots of enjoyment from it unless it's a real mess, and I don't see any reason why it should be!

    Express elevator to hell! GO-ING-DOWN!
  • Amgzone #62 2 years ago

    Now available on the PSN!
  • Sideras #63 2 years ago

The demo atleast for the pc was horribly bad, i can't stress how disappointed i am right now.
  • Bulbatron #64 2 years ago

I thought the demo was great and I don't usually even play online multiplayer!
  • thesonglessbird #65 2 years ago

Thought the demo was a bit boring TBH.
I only got to play as a marine, so maybe that has something to do with it.
  • wiggy1 #66 2 years ago

    what a disappointment
  • drumbaby #67 2 years ago

I was really looking forward to dl-ing this, booting up a map, and even if noone was present ingame, just firing off a few shots, scaling walls, trying out a cloaking device -- just to get the vibe and sense of the graphics.

But no, Rebellion have, to all intents and purposes, given the PS3 crowd a menu for mutliplayer matchmaking...sans the matches. And it's 1gb in size :0)

Hope the final game is better thought out than this lame system, as going back many years ago PC fps games have allowed you to host a game and wait for player in the map...or am I missing something?
  • Amgzone #68 2 years ago

Well i can't even get a game, constantly searching for games and never finding one.
  • drumbaby #69 2 years ago

Ditto. It's pathetic that they give you just one mode, and only allow a game to kick off with 8 players. Always looking for 7 more players...seriously, what are the chances of that happening with a brand new demo. Don't they want people to play the bloody thing?
  • AhSoul #70 2 years ago

So no private matches etc on the 360 version?
  • Amgzone #71 2 years ago

Still searching ..still hasnt found anything. Not a good first impression.
  • hahayou #72 2 years ago

I can't get into a game either. There isn't even an option to play a local one player game and see what it looks like. Great demo guys, well done...

edit: did get in eventually. Didn't impress that much, everyone was using the quick-time-event kills and you would literally get queues forming - the predator doesn't start with a ranged weapon so there's a lot more melee than a DM game is really suited for IMO. The alien movement wasn't as fluid and fun as AvP2. Laggy too.
On the plus side the basics are covered - the marine motion detector still makes everything really atmospheric, the sounds are right and the alien can still wall-walk. The predator cloak and vision modes were totally useless but I don't think that's a bad thing for deathmatch.

  • Amgzone #73 2 years ago

Got a game, only took 2 hours!
  • AhSoul #74 2 years ago

And was it any good when you did??
  • AhSoul #75 2 years ago

    From the rebellion website:

We've identified an issue with the matchmaking system that is causing the very long wait times to get into a PC game, and hope to release an update shortly which addresses this.

In the meantime players can ease connection issues by getting together with a group of players before entering matchmaking. Inviting friends or joining players via the Steam overlay will help work around the issue. If you need help finding players you can join one of the community groups, e.g. [link url=http://steamco mmunity.com/groups/AVPI.
    ]http://steamco mmunity.com/groups/AVPI.
    [/link]

In addition to the matchmaking functionality the full game features dedicated servers, server browsers, and the ability to host games directly.
  • Amgzone #76 2 years ago

To answer your question ...no it wasnt very good lol
  • AhSoul #77 2 years ago

Gutted. Soooooo wanted this to be good. Hope it's only a bad demo, not a bad game.....
  • drumbaby #78 2 years ago

Don'y flatter yourselves Rebellion, who's going to be arsed to do that for a fecking demo?
  • DAN.E.B #79 2 years ago

I got in to a game on the 360 straight away!
and then i left because it was total shit.
  • sarcasmoidosis #80 2 years ago

Got two rounds of this on PC. The feeling was there, but not much else. Ugliest menus I've seen in a while and it looks... bland. I know it's only a DX9 demo and DX11 is suppose to blow my head off, but I really wanted to have my head blown now. Might hop on it on Live too, see if it feels better.

But, as I said, the feeling was there. "Radar goes beep-beep-beeeeep"
  • pingu #81 2 years ago

Guys, watch this - http://www .youtube.com/watch?v=rL7VrU6upCA before you play the demo.

And Rebellion are looking into the connection issues. Pretty much every MP game has teething problems, hang in there!

  • evilrobot #85 2 years ago

On the 360 had no problems at all? straight into game after game? i like it once you get used to the factions and their various controls. Though i think predators will dominate free for all play. Did get my ass handed to me by some marines a few times tho lol. If i ended up as an alien i would pop all the lights and try to ambush from above.
  • MrE26 #86 2 years ago

It does take a while to click, & i think a team deathmatch mode would have been better, but once you learn the controls & mechanics, it's a lot of fun.

Bodes well for the SP campaign too, as it's fluid & controls well.
