Steel Battalion launch farce

Limited numbers to leave pre-orders unfulfilled

The launch of Capcom's unique mech shoot 'em up Steel Battalion and its gigantic custom controller is set to turn into a farce, as limited stocks leave pre-orders unfulfilled while copies flood onto eBay.

Sources have informed us that only around 2000 copies of the game, which is only sold along with its controller and costs £129, have been shipped to retail in the UK - and that there are no plans for any further shipments in the future.

Although this figure was estimated by Microsoft (which has taken over publishing duties for the title in the UK from Capcom) to be enough to cover pre-orders of the game, many customers can expect to be turned away from at least one major retailer today empty-handed - because foul-ups in its pre-ordering system led to it ordering too few units to fill its own pre-orders.

It's not expected that any retailers will have sufficient stock to put copies of the game on open sale - so the only option for gamers with no pre-order, or those whose pre-order hasn't been fulfilled, is to turn to online auction sites such as eBay.

At time of writing, there are eight copies of the UK PAL edition of Steel Battalion available on eBay - and the game doesn't officially launch until tomorrow. This is explained by a number of retail sources who told GamesIndustry.biz that staff at some retailers, anticipating that demand for the game will not be met, have been buying multiple copies of the game at staff discount prices and then putting them onto eBay immediately - often at the expense of consumers who will be told on Friday that their pre-order cannot be filled.

"There was limited stock on allocation so we made the decision to allocate stock to retailers that ran pre orders," explained Microsoft UK's Xbox PR man Nick Grange. "The orders have been well over our initial expectations so unfortunately and unavoidably there may be some disappointed customers."

Obviously Steel Battalion was always going to be a tricky prospect for retail and distribution, thanks to the high cost, bulky packaging and niche interest nature of the game. However, before too many excuses are made, it's worth remembering that Sega launched the cult title Samba de Amigo on the ill-fated Dreamcast (complete with £100 maracas controller) without any of this sort of messing about…

    First post!!!!!

That's a bit of a shame isn't it? You'd think that stores would have a limit policy on the amount you can buy on staff discount.

And how much are these staff being paid so they can afford several copies?

Well, I know one person who managed to get his pre-order.

Incidentally, nice to see the the word 'Xboxen' making it into the more serious business side of the Eurogamer empire! ;-)

This is outrageous, and should almost certainly not be allowed !

Well, they're not buying them so they can sit at home and play three copies of the game at once - in a few days time they're probably going to realise a profit of between fifty and a hundred quid minimum on each one they put on ebay.

Note that we're not sure how widespread this is - we were told about three seperate instances of it happening by customers who'd been told by cheeky store staff that their preorders wouldn't be filled but that they could get a copy on ebay, and a little bit of phoning about revealed a couple more. Tends to suggest that it's happening in quite a few places... I'll be very interested to see how many people today don't get their pre-orders, and how many copies of Steel Battalion are on ebay by the end of the weekend...

It's always going to happen in the large multiples because they give such good staff discounts. I know people who were always buying multiple copies of specialist items and floging them on ebay for profit.
On the other hand though, how many copies of this could you fit on the average shelf?
It was always going to be a pre-order game in shops, apart from in London where there are always people with more money than sense buying up stuff.

There's 10 on sale on Ebay at the moment, most all sealed as well funny that...

It's the PS2 all over again. I hope no-one buys it and they make no money at all. Bloody blood sucking leech-shark mutation types on Ebay.

Tell me about it. Not a copy to be had ANYWHERE within a 200 mile radius of Oxford.

Guess I won't be single just yet then.

My Samba De Amigo only worked out at about £60 for the controller and 30 for the game retail. Bloody big box mind you...(about 3.5 feet long last time I looked)

You would have thought that if there was sufficient demand, Microsoft might actually consider bringing in a second shipment (I'm sure they don't mind selling more copies). That said, I thought it looked too expensive at £130 (especially as it can't even be justified as a party thing, like Samba or the fishing rod, or even lightguns), so I can't see many people paying another £50-100 on top of this. That said, people are often amazingly stupid, so who knows?

I got one today using my staff discount: 90quid. Dont worry this will be mine for a while yet and unless I get very poor will never go on ebay. I was the only person to preorder at my store and anyone that had preordered with a £20 quid deposit up till a couple of weeks would have got one.

I pre-ordered in January, and at first Game wasn't going to honour my order, as at that point they weren't taking deposits. Luckily I was able to complain enough that they managed to get me a unit. I picked it up on Thursday, one day before release. It's fantastic!

The main problem is finding something suitable to rest the controller on while you play, if like me you normally just sit on the sofa to play the Xbox. I found the best solution was to rest it on an ironing board while sitting on a chair, which gives you a nice stable base for the controller (so it doesn't wobble as you press the pedals) and allows you sit sit closer to the TV.

It's fucking great though. Love the way all the buttons light up...

capcom should just step in here and sell them directly off their website. I'm sure the delivery costs would not quite outweigh the cut that the shops must be taking (at least £40).
  • Pirotic #15 9 years ago

i was doomed from the start, the development team kept it a secret from the share-holders until it was too late in production to cancel, my hat goes off to capcom however for being daring, just a shame the joystick was let down by a shabby game.

Friend of mine got his from Amazon... ordered it on the 27th, arrived on the 29th. Snorted. Someone must have cancelled their order... those fools! It's so good!
