Are you the UK's best Nintendo gamer? News

Wii News by Ellie Gibson

28 September, 2009

Calling all women and old people - a new competition is being launched to find Britain's best Nintendo gamer.

To enter, you'll need to visit a participating shop on Saturday 17th or Sunday 18th October. There you'll compete by playing four games - Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. DS.

Two entrants will be selected at each store to go forward to the 16-player final, where they'll battle it out to win the title of Britain's Best Nintendo Gamer. Presenter, comedian, Absolute Radio DJ and PS3-hater Iain Lee will host the event, which takes place on Friday 30th October. It will be held at the Odeon in Covent Garden.

The finalists will become the first gamers in the country to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii before its official release. They'll also get sent every first-party Nintendo game released for one year.

The overall winner will be awarded a trip for five people to Nintendo's hometown in Japan, worth £10,000. The prize will be presented by Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario.

Stores taking part in the tournament include Gamestation in Hull, Norwich, Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh Princess Street [Princes, surely?]. Alternatively you can visit the GAME stores on Oxford Street or in Bluewater, or the GAME concessions in Selfridges, Trafford Centre and Borders, Swansea.

I'm probably among the best Super Mario World players, I can do a speed run in about 20 minutes. I also have about 20 pokemon at lvl 100 (the proper way, no rare candies here!) in Pokemon Red.

One time i reached the technodrome on Turtles on the NES.... remember it being quite hard. Have played and loved loads of Nintendo games in the past but haven't wasted my money on Wii Sports resortor Wii Fit.

Is that all? 13 years since the game was released and that's all you've got? :/

I blew the dust off my wii this month. I reckon that should give me enough wii gaming experience to blow away the competition!

Oh, the Scotland effort is in Edinburgh for a change instead of Glasgow. Maybe I'll go along.

Well I'm a self-proclaimed UK's best Nintendo gamer. Does that count?

Oh wait... "women" and "old people"? I guess I don't belong in either category. Never mind.

Very odd games choice. Mario Bros DS and Mario Kart i kinda get, although I can just imagine someone playing a damn near flawless lap on MK only to be bombarded with blue shells and lose. Unless its a time trial or something? As for Wii Fit? I guess if you have the perfect posture you could ace that one. Maybe time an epileptic fit for the Wii Sports Resort one to give you an edge.

Might do this just for the opportunity to punch Iain "smug git" Lee in the face.

I'm a 20-something smart looking DINKY with a pretty fashionable living room. It's not a white loft mind you, and I may have to look for some white clothes, sure, my toothpaste smile needs some work, but I feel like I should be better in Wii Fit than most people.

People hate what they cant understand.

And all these new mainstream gamers who think that games should begin and end with shooters .. they dont understand that games should be fun....
