Monolith founder wants to re-release '90s FPS Blood

Could get transfused to modern platforms for free.

1997 first-person shooter Blood might get a re-release, if founder and former CEO of Monolith Productions Jace Hall has anything to say about it.

Hall outlined his goal on the Blood fansite The Postmortem, where he explained that he'd like to bring the original game back with minor enhancements "that are similar but superior to ZDaemon's."

"I would also make it work on all platforms, and not just PC," he added

Hall noted that he'd like the re-release to be free and that it was "all about gameplay and fun" to him. He further emphasised that it was a passion project when he said, "One thing to also know is that if I go ahead and attempt to bring Blood back, I will be the one actually paying the bill. It is certainly going to cost money to do this, and I will not likely be getting my money back. It will be all for the fun of it."

As far as rights are concerned Hall assured us that's all squared away. "If I indeed decide to move forward with my ideas for Blood, I certainly will be able to and will get all the support I need from all/any parties that may have legal interest in the game. You guys don't have to worry about that. There is no problem there. Handled."

Before Hall embarks on this costly expenditure, he wants to make sure there's sufficient interest in it and would like to get the community involved. "I think it would good for the community to begin to create a 'dream list' of all the things that they would hope for with Blood," he said.

He added that he has the game's source code, but can't release it as is due to rights issues. "Of course I have the source code for Blood in my possession - however, that is not the issue. The issue is whether or not it could ever be released to the public, and I want to make it clear that it is not my decision. And please understand that the companies that can make that decision are not inclined to ever do so."

Hall confirmed on Twitter that these claims were made by him and not an impostor. When asked, "Is that true that you're making an 'enhanced' version of original Blood?" He responded, "Make Blood! Make Blood! Make Blood!"

The original Blood was the first game by Monolith, in conjunction with Duke Nukem 3D creators 3D Realms who left midway through the project to work on Shadow Warrior. See it in action in some vintage Youtube footage below.
