Alan Wake PC confirmed

Out early next year. Screenshot released.

Alan Wake launches on PC during the first quarter of 2012, Remedy has announced.

The Finnish developer said during a press conference in London this afternoon that the game will launch on Steam.

A single screenshot, below, has been released.

The announcement was made at London's Nokia House, as Remedy VP Aki Järvilehto spoke about the company's adoption of digital distribution.

The PC version of Alan Wake will come packaged with The Signal and The Writer, the two well-received DLC add-ons for the game.

    silly little game, alone in the dark 2 without the charm
  • deadstoned #4 5 months ago

    Steamworks? =D Hopefully GFWL wont be used for it now.
  • lambchop #5 5 months ago

    @StolenGlory but can they make it play any better....

    Is it ok to look a gift horse in the mouth when its two years late to the party and everyone knows it's an ass?

    Would consider buying again for achievements on GFWL.

    Makes sense actually, why lose some extra sales with little (?) porting effort?

    @AnthonyDaniels: you said pretty much the same thing in the runour article earlier in the week - get over it you poisonous little troll!

    Though far from perfect, AW is a solid title and well worth a play-through or two. Enjoy my PC brethen. Looking forward to American Nightmare and, hopefully, a full-blown sequel further down the line....

    I remember the disapointment after hearing no PC version,when this supposed to be a simultaneous PC/360 release.Now I can say with confidence that I really don't care.
  • Nikells #14 5 months ago

    This is way too late (almost 2 years), don't come crawling back to the PC gamers because your console only game didn't do very well.
  • Moth_Pope #15 5 months ago

    So if they're announcing it now, it should be ready in, what, the next 5 years or so?

    To be honest I hope there are no hitches this time. I thought Alan Wake was decent enough on the Xbox, but would've gone down much better if it wasn't for all the delays and it launched with the 360.
  • Vitor #16 5 months ago

    So it's not going to be full retail price, right? Because when games are even a few months late to the party on PC (Fable 3 and LA Noire for example) they don't tend to sell well. A price cut would certainly help. I hardly want to pay full price for the game twice when I already bought it on Xbox on release. £20 new on the other hand...
  • Inmediasress #17 5 months ago

    @geox30
    Exactly and now they will say some nonsense like it doesn't sell because of piracy.

    I still believe to this day that it would have been better recieved.
    Maybe even GOTY if M$ wouldn't have been such dicks and decide to pull the plug because they needed a quick exclusive for their Xbox.
    The game was basically hyped for the PC and many PC fans were looking really forward to it.
    Remedy can thank M$ for ruining their franchise before even it began.

    I'll buy it if it comes out and there won't be any other games around that I'm interested in.
  • peppergomez #18 5 months ago

    Do i smell last year's meatloaf?
  • G-Lord #19 5 months ago

    Not sure how I should feel. Already played the game on X360, as I did not expect a PC version. Same thing happened to me with L.A. Noire.
  • Triggerhappytel #20 5 months ago

    If they're now going multiformat I'd like to see a PS3 port as well, although I suspect it's contracted to remain a 360 console exclusive.

    Still, I agree with previous comments that it does feel like they kind of shot themselves in the foot as to their PC audience.
  • jetsetwillie #21 5 months ago

    @Nikells what about if they say sorry and offer you a blow job. will you welcome them then.
  • Syrette #22 5 months ago

    @Triggerhappytel

    You 'suspect' that it's contracted to remain a console exclusive for the 360?

    I'd more than suspect that, given Microsoft published it.

    ;)
  • bad09 #23 5 months ago

    Meh, I'll pass seeing as they lied with an absolutely terrible line probably to hide an exclusive deal with MS.
  • TH3WICK3D1 #24 5 months ago

    Great news... welcome back to the PC scene Remedy.
  • -cerberus- #25 5 months ago

    What the fuck took them so long?! At least the two extra chapters and thus the real ending are included...
    EDIT: Let's not get too excited though, we've still yet to hear some news about the DRM bullshit they'll probably use to screw you guys over.

  • Triggerhappytel #26 5 months ago

    @Syrette

    Yes they did, but they *only* published it; the IP belongs to Remedy. Perhaps there was only a 24 month console exclusivity period, or maybe it's indefinite - who knows. Being a PS3 gamer I still hope it makes the jump at some point.
  • Belmonth #27 5 months ago

    YES OMG YES! Thank you Remedy!
  • thewool #28 5 months ago

    Yes!!!! Day 1 purchase for me :0)

    Note to Rock Star: RDR now please
  • Monkeyspoon #29 5 months ago

    Cool. Hopefully it will look much better in hd. The 360s resolution, framerate and tearing were awful. And 360 fanboys said it would look better than the Uncharted games. Dream on.
  • bad09 #30 5 months ago

    @thewool

    Rockstar are another company known for lying to PC consumers about their games like Remedy have with AW but RDR is truly looking like it will never happen.

    There were rumours about PC getting the GOTY version (which is still possible I guess) but whispers say the code was in such a mess it's lucky the consoles got it so it would be too big a job to get it working on PC.
  • Kami #31 5 months ago

    Time has mellowed my harsh view of Alan Wake. I still think it was disappointing, and an amalgamation of many different genre cliches, ideas and tropes, but it was I admit a perfectly serviceable game. Nothing life-changingly awesome like Project Zero 2, nor as nuanced as Silent Hill 2 or 3, or as all-dancing as Resi 4. But okay. Good. Alright.

    Also, these days it does seem to take a second game to make a series come good. No doubt a sequel would put right the many wrongs... that is, if we can get it before 2020.

    I wonder what's happening with Alan Wake 2? I think this would probably would have been better received if it were part of the hype for a sequel with a unified PC/Console release rather than just feeling like it's 2 years late.

    I am looking forward to the revolutionary DX10 effects.

    Wasn't there an expandalone download-only announcement just a few days ago? Might come bundled with the PC version and the whole package sold at full price, I imagine.

    @Monkeyspoon

    Just to add some balance to your PS3 fanboy slanted opinion, according to DF very own tech analysis, the frame rate is mostly very smooth, the screen tear is really only noticeable during the daytime as the night scenes in which the majority of the game is set masks it fairly well for the most part and the low resolution is well masked by the 4xMSAA and decent upscaling. However let's say this game was released on your beloved PS3, would it have been any better technically? I doubt it. For one this game was a heavy drain on the 360 GPU and the PS3 has an inferior GPU. The game uses a ton of alpha which really stressed the 360. As we know the PS3 has far less bandwidth than the 360 so that part couldn't be improved upon. Oh and the foliage. It's pretty well known that again due to bandwidth limitations the PS3 can render less foliage than it's 360 counterpart. So a game with lots of alpha and foliage would unlikely perform and look any better on Sony's machine. In fact I can't think of any PS3 game that needs to render all the things AW does. Perhaps you can enlighten me.
  • Okamiwolf #45 5 months ago

    I could gloat about how their Xbox exclusivity didn't work out for them the way they'd hoped, and how they're now crawling back on their knees to the PC market they previously ditched, but I think the most appropriate response is to welcome back this prodigal son with grace and mercy and open arms. It's time to cook the fatted calf in celebration.

  • Belmonth #49 5 months ago

    Confirmed on Alanwake official forum that it will not use GFWL !!!
  • chessboxer #50 5 months ago

    Who is the publisher? If the game doesn't require GFWL then I can't imagine that MS are onboard for this version.
  • Belmonth #51 5 months ago

    You dont really need publisher for a digital only version of a game. The game was already made , so funding of development is out of the question also. This is probably just Remedy showing some love for PC gamers , fins like pc and also i guess they remember their roots.

  • mastorofpuppetz #55 5 months ago

    @Badass, so much garbage in your post. So much for you adding balance. Look up MLAA its something only the PS3 cell can do. What you FAIL to know is the PS3 is NOT like a PC or xbox, so comparing the GPU doesnt cut it.

    There is a reason nothing on Xbox touches Uncharted, God of War killzone (Digital foundry shows this). The PS3 CELL can Augment the GPU taking a huge load off the gpu (MLAA is one such technique). This negates any slight advantage the 360 GPU has. When all SPU's of cell are used the 360 cannot hold up to the PS3. The only issue is not all devs use cell much at all.

    Your foliage comment is particularily ignorant., Have you played uncharted and its lush foliage, detailed textures, huge draw distance, and amazing fire, smoke effects and animations? Xbox tries to run Uncharted FPS would be in single digits. The foliage in Uncharted 2 is a lot more thick and frequent then Alan wake, and textures and lighting way more detailed.
  • Code_R #56 5 months ago

    Hopefully the extra sales will get a full on sequel made faster
  • Okamiwolf #57 5 months ago

    @mastorofpuppetz You neglect to mention the PS3's greatest weakness: not enough RAM.
  • cloudskipa #58 5 months ago

    @JAGUARCD32x I totally agree with you, Alan Wake has some of the finest visuals this gen, highly underrated in that respect. It has the best shadows and lighting I've seen in a videogame and the atmosphere is top notch. Combine that with Remedy's talent to make a great 3rd person shooters and you have an awesome game. Enjoy it PC gamers, you're in for a treat!
  • cloudskipa #59 5 months ago

    @mastorofpuppetz You are having a laugh. Uncharted doesn't even begin to compare to Alan Wake in terms of lighting, dense foliage, open areas, smoke/particle effects and volumetric fog along with a host of other visual effects. (Not saying uncharted looks crap, obviously it's a great looking series of games)

    Alan Wake impressed me on a level none of the uncharted games did though, it's also way more atmospheric but this is just my opinion and the art design between the two games is very different so it's difficult to compare in some respects.
  • mastorofpuppetz #60 5 months ago

    @Okamiwolf Both have 512 retard, only diff is Xbox is unified and PS3 is divided into Video ram and system ram, learn some facts before posting.
  • mastorofpuppetz #61 5 months ago

    @cloudskipa Every graphical analysis shows you are wrong, Alan wake is not that good looking of a game, not even the best on 360 let alone in Uncharted territory. And no Alan Wake does not touch uncharted God of War or Killzone. Jungle is a huge part of Uncharted actually play the game.
  • pedrohasashi #62 5 months ago

    @mastorofpuppetz

    Havent you play gers 3 bro? It does what U2 and U3 does. Check it out.
  • mastorofpuppetz #63 5 months ago

    @pedrohasashi Gears? Umm no its doesn't and I have played them I had a 360 befire I bought a PS3. Again, every graphical analysis shows this, GEars is not even in the top 5 PS3 games graphically if it were on the PS3. Doesnt touch Uncharted, God of War Killzone, HEavy Rain, etc.... Epics Unreal engine pales in comparison to first party PS3 studios who use cell properly.

    Again, any Analysis Lens of Truth, Digital foundry will tell you all you need to know.
  • dennett316 #64 5 months ago

    All the guys arguing tech specs and graphical willy waving...stop it, you embarrass other gamers with this crap.
    I don't play specs, I play games. And while graphics are important to some extent, how the game plays is far more important in the big scheme of things. All this talk of the 360 couldn't handle this or that is just that...talk. Uncharted was programmed with the PS3's abilities in mind, porting it to the 360 would be extremely hard, but I'm sure with enough time and money (and enough discs) it'd be doable. Would it look as good? Who's to say, it's not been done, and the only ones who would know would be the developers after they adjusted to the 360 hardware.

    On point, Alan Wake was a really good game with great atmosphere and art design - which means far more than graphical horsepower, look at Okami, Mario Galaxy and the latest Rayman title...all gorgeous - and I'd be excited to see it on the PC in full on HD glory.
  • amin7224 #65 5 months ago

    it will release for Windows 8
    not just this game, all xbox game will playable on windows 8
    maybe this game is different.
    whatever, this is best news for this month
    from next year you will see that all game company will going into pc games
  • johniem #66 5 months ago

    Better late than never..
  • Badassbab #67 5 months ago

    @mastorofpuppetz

    You haven't made any relevant points apart the part about foliage. Alan Wake is set in a forest so I don't see how Uncharted could have more dense alpha heavy foliage because it simply doesn't. The alpha comment still stands.

    Talking about graphics though yeah I know the very few top tier PS3 exclusives look the best but not by much.
  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #68 5 months ago

    I also think that the lighting, shadows, particle and fog effects in AW were some of the best I've seen this gen. The combat was also satisfying, tactile and reasonably tactical.
    I sometimes struggle to work out why it was an 7-8 in my opinion as opposed to a 9-10 and I can only think that it was mostly due to the lack of compulsion to get through a level. It was far from bad, but it sometimes felt like a bit of a slog to get to the next cutscene. Perhaps slightly better level design, pacing and variety in enemies would have helped which is why a lot of people think an AW2 could be a top game.
  • Darren #69 5 months ago

    I was put off buying Alan Wake on the Xbox 360 by the horrid screen tearing that was apparent in every video I watched. Good news that it is finally coming to the PC. Will definitely buy it.
  • ChuckNorris #70 5 months ago

    @mastorofpuppetz Not this shit again. A few things:

    Shut up. Grow up. Nobody cares.

    This is a terribly dull subject, move on.
  • cloudskipa #71 5 months ago

    @JAGUARCD32x That's good to hear, I get a bit tired of being told how wrong I am for thinking that but I've played all the Uncharted games and imho Alan Wake has the more impressive graphics by quite some distance, they look so much more organic and to my eyes Uncharted looks almost cartoon-like by comparison. Different styles though I know.
  • PimblyCharles #72 5 months ago

    What's really crazy is I am still using the PC I built specifically for Alan Wake. Then it got canceled on PC. If you all remember some of the tech demos shown for the game years back, it was shown running on a Core 2 Quad (which was unreleased at the time!). I built a system with a Q6600 & Geforce 8800 Ultra. I was so bummed out when it was canceled. I have a newer motherboard, memory & Geforce GTX 470 now, but I am still using my awesome and dated Q6600 (now overclocked to 3.6GHz, 1.5V!). Looks like my long lived Q6600 will finally get to play Alan Wake. Happy times...
