Tony Hawk reveals Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD

UPDATE: Download game out summer 2012.

UPDATE: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD launches summer 2012, Tony Hawk has said during the Spike VGA pre-show.

It's the "best of our first two games but for the new consoles," he said. "All the same gameplay people love and the joystick controls, big scoring combos and a lot of the classic stuff we had but some new stuff as well."

1

Gamers will enjoy the old school Pro Skater gameplay because of "the replayability" Hawk said. "People can come back to it and find new challenges to do, not just the ones we set up for them. But we're going back to the old two minute challenges, collect the letters, get the combos, get the scores. I'm out of my mind excited about it."

How much will it cost? "It'll be relatively cost effective. Less than $20," he said.

ORIGINAL STORY: Activision will release Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD during the first half of 2012, Tony Hawk has revealed.

The download game takes select levels from the first two Tony Hawk titles and gives them a HD makeover, Joystiq reports. Levels "School" and "Downhill" are included.

2

Hawk will appear at the Spike Video Game Awards tonight to fully unveil the game, which he teased this week on Twitter.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (Tony Hawk's Skateboarding in Europe) launched in 1999 for the PlayStation, and was later ported to the Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 launched a year later, again on PlayStation with later ports.

This is exactly what I wanted from the franchise, thank you! Now let's see how much this sells compared to those games with that awful peripheral.

I'm guessing the licensed characters will be gone though.

That is quite exciting then. Back to the good arcade-style unrealistic score-attack original stuff, exaggerated physics, impossibly huge ollies and rotations and combos. This is what made the Tony Hawks series huge even for people who have no interest in extreme sports like myself, it was just a fun game. I was still in school in '99 and I have good memories of these games that started the series.

    Yes. A million times yes.

I think I wore out the demo disc that came with OPM way back when.

How revolutionary was THPS2's level editor :). Creating content in a console game was so fresh and exciting at that time. Also WWF Attitude's create-a-wrestler :).

Man when these came out i worked for GAME, i got a disciplinary for standing in front of the Shop TV and playing tony hawk pro skater from 9am to 5pm, ive just bought it!

:D awesome news out of nowhere! for people who don't know why the hell should they give a shit - THPS 1,2 and 3 were among the best playstation1/N64/dreamcast games - and they would make great downloadable offering nowadays : D how many hours did i spend on grinding between the train rails in thps 2 to make some insane combos

Well that's my summer gone. What the fuck took you so long Activision!? Played the absolute shit out of the original and then played the sequel with my cousins in a swap-the-pad marathon over an entire summer. Brings back some amazing memories and I can't wait for this.

I swore to never support Activision again but if this turns out how I'm imagining it right now I'll be throwing over my cash on day one. Just price it reasonably Acti.

Hopefully they keep it as streamlined as the originals. Maybe with the level editor from 2 with a 'create and share' aspect like Trials and LBP?

Good news for die hard fans but I'll stick with my Dreamcast version.
  • OxWearingSocks #11 6 months ago

This news would be even sweeter if the original soundtrack is confirmed. completely made the first two games.

    @carrotcake

I wasted hours with the editors in Tony Hawk 3, WWF Attitude and Wrestlemania 2000. Hours!
  • Ryze #13 6 months ago

    BIG.

Took too long though - just like Daytona USA.

Also SEGA, where's the original Sega Rally?

Hated Tony Hawks at first 'cos I couldn't get to grips with the controls. THEN got the game free with my N-Gage of all systems. Played the shit out of it and ended up loving it. Shame number 3 isn't included as that's one of the few PS2 games I still own and still my favourite of the series.

Can't wait to hear more on the soundtrack for the game. Hope they take some of the best music from the series and maybe add some new stuff that'll work, would be great.

Christmas 98? Was it? I was unwrapping the first game everytime my rents went out. I had completed it by the time it was Christmas day. Sneaky.

The sequel was the best one. with manuals etc. For me the rot set in with thps 3
  • IMD1_Pk #17 6 months ago

Why not release 3/4? Those are arguably the pinnacle of the series
  • Spazdarn #18 6 months ago

I'd nearly have paid that fee for the soundtracks alone, loved the first two games. The third one was pretty good as well but after that it was kinda downhill for me.
  • joelstinton #19 6 months ago

I hope they keep that level editor as well. Its was simple, yet really effective in creating a park that flowed really well. Looking forward to this. 20 odd levels and infinite create and share levels? yes please.
  • NotSoSlim #20 6 months ago

@IMD1_Pk Err DLC mate mark my words. Its Activision here. If this sells well they will bombard DLC for this with all the old levels
  • Mister-Wario #21 6 months ago

I actually own original copies of these games :D Paid something like a pound each for them. Glad to hear of this though. They're great games.
  • self_titled #22 6 months ago

"Now this is what it's like when worlds collllllide!!"

It will be a tragedy if they don't keep the original soundtracks!

This is great news, thps 1&2 were the video game crack of their era!
  • PeacockDreams #26 6 months ago

Thps3 was the pinacle of the series and must surely follow!

My pants just got a little bit tighter

Good news for skating fans, been really short on any good games recently as far as I can work out.
  • matty_matt_mattmatt #28 6 months ago

I played the absolute crap out of the first tony hawk game and then i played it again the other day (hadnt been touched for like 11 years) and all the special moves were still etched into my memory, Great game.

    WANT!

The 1st had some awesome locations but lacked a mechanic or two. The 2nd added to the mix, and also had some cracking venues - it was the pinnacle of the series for me. The 2 school venues from these are made of win for starters.

If they retrofit later mechanics and update the venues this will be a thing of beauty. I want to try The Mall with manuals. You'd probably be able to do that bastard in one magnificent grind-fest of a trick. :D

Please make it happen. I've generally been against remakes of old games, but this news has changed my mind a little. It's 2 O'Clock in the morning and I've just found my PC copy of THPS 2, reinstalled it and played the Hangar with Elissa Steamer. WIN! (The PC version of no. 2 is pretty damned good btw - I've just played it on a 360 gamepad at a half-decent resolution with no fuss whatsoever. I picked it up on the Xplosiv budget range for a couple of quid. No idea if it's still easily available, but if you can find it I recommend you buy it right away. It's made of solid gold win.)

Can I still do THPS3 tricks. I love this idea but I do want everything I can have with it. Not a control downgrade. I want to chain combo's dammit.
  • Stoatboy #34 5 months ago

@puddleduck: The rest of my day may well be spent on Youtube searching for Rodney Mullen clips. The vert stuff can be spectacular, but what he does on the flat is properly amazing:
