PlayStation 3D display coming to Europe

Update: UK price £499.

Update: Sony has told Euogamer the PlayStation 3D TV will cost £499 in the UK.

Original story: Sony has confirmed that the 24" PlayStation-branded 3D TV announced at E3 this year is coming to Europe in the Autumn priced at €499.

Speaking during the platform holder's Gamescom presentation today, Sony exec Jim Ryan stated that the set will offer an "accessible entry to 3D gaming".

The screen boasts "unique" SimulView technology that allows two different viewers to see two different images at the same time depending on where they are seated.

Two pairs of 3D glasses are included.

We're chasing Sony for a UK price and concrete release date. Update soon.

    Well, I can get a 24" display for 150 Euro. That's 350 Euro for 3D. Thanks, I pass.
  • God_Octo #3 9 months ago

499 Euroes is not accessible. 499 Dollars to euros makes that 346, which is more accessible. I think sony's price gouging is going to come back and bite them in the arse- at £349, I would have considered splashing out for one, but not at 500 smackeroons.

24" is too small for a living room and fuck spending £400ish for a tv for the bedroom
  • lockload #5 9 months ago

They are not tellign the whole story on the twinview either it only works if games are specifically written to support it and none are

Also at 499 euros it would be better to spend the extra money on a bigger HDTV and forget 3d

A couple of people have said you need a least a 40" screen for 3D to be good. Not seen it for myself though.
  • ajaxpliskin #7 9 months ago

Thanks, but I'd rather not rape my eyes.
  • kingpin3000 #8 9 months ago

lockload: I was speaking to a Sony worker a few weeks ago and he was fairly sure that system was robust enough that the PS3 would be able to do the conversion by itself. Nothing official, but I can't help but suspect it isn't too difficult.

Excellent, I shall be sure to don a hoodie and stove in the windows of my local electronics retailer, when the time comes.

The problem with Simulview is that it's gonna hurt your eyes really bad. The screen runs at 60 Hz, so that leaves 16 ms per frame. With the glasses that means you will see a frame for 16 ms, then for the next 16 ms your glasses will black out (cause the frame for the other player is displayed). The resulting effect is similar to old cathode ray screens running at 50 or 60 Hz. It's flickering like mad.

LG is coming out with new 3DTVs that use polarized screens. It's basically the same thing like in the cinema, you just need those light 1€ plastic glasses to get the same experience. This will be much more suited for something like Simulview cause the frames for both eyes are shown at the same time. No flickering there. And of course it's much cheaper with the glasses.

you can do the split screen full screen for both players with the lg 3d tvs already, and thats with any split screen game.
  • rotsujin #12 9 months ago

...allows two different viewers to see two different images at the same time depending on where they are seated.

It's handled by the glasses, not your seating arrangement.
  • HyperTails #13 9 months ago

See, they all want 3D to take off, but charge over the top prices for the priveledge. This TV isn't even that big to boot, and they need to hurry up with 3D that doesn't need glasses... seriously, when glasses free 3D is around for 10 years we'll all look back and laugh at having to once need to wear glasses to view it.

Until they ditch the dorky glasses and make it affordable, and get more 3D content on the actual telly, then the only 3D i'll be experiencing is from my 3DS.
  • jonbwfc #14 9 months ago

The price is a joke. You can buy a 24" non-3d TV for half that price, or a full-fat 3D TV for 100 quid more. They will sell next to none of these things.

i'm amazed how many kicks in the nuts sony need before realizing that customers don't show any, ANY strong demand for 3d in living rooms. one would assume that such experianced company would know better how to do business. : /
  • login_name #18 9 months ago

Seriously? £499? That makes the UK price $821.
No thanks, I'm not in need of a bum rape today (or any other day).

    24" !!!!!
Are they having a laugh. I've been playing on a 43" plasma for the last 3 years. There is no way in hell im going down to a 24" just for some blurry 3D..

24" is ridicously small. Even for the bedroom in my opinion.
Does it come with a free pair of bino's so you can watch it from more then 4 ft away..
  • captainrentboy #22 9 months ago

    Wow, what a bargain.
Aren't 40 inch 3D TVs getting ever closer to the £700 mark nowadays? Who in their right fooking mind would pay £500 for a 24 inch mode
  • riceNpea #23 9 months ago

    24"?!

what market research came up with that size? i have bigger shits then that in the morning!
  • Popolon #24 9 months ago

wasn't this promised to include Uncharted 3 at this price?

If "autumn" means same day or b4 child of eden I am interested.
otherwise I'll pay more for biger screen 35" sound perfect for me......
  • God_Octo #25 9 months ago

Now that Sony have confirmed its £499 in the UK, I can confirm its far too expensive and I won't be buying one. For £85 more you can get a 43 inch one from Tescos. Sony totally shot themselves in the foot with this one.
  • X201 #26 9 months ago

After E3 I was very interested in getting one.
But that pricing has chucked an ice cold bucket of water over that idea.
  • Snaggletooth #27 9 months ago

lol....or you can buy a 42" 3D TV full 1080p, freeview with LG panel for £449.00

/doesn't work for this company, was just making a point of how much of a rip off the PS3 one is :)

whaaaat seriously hes smoking some wacky backy there.
500 nicker for a 24" pile of shite.
i paid less for my sammy 43" plasma 3dtv with 2 pairs of glasses.

    no, thank you.

This has to be one of the most stupid moves i've seen Sony make lately. Just when things were starting to look up and after a good year for PS3 (Minus the hacking fiasco) they try shift a 24" 3D TV for £499 ! and have the balls to call it "accessible entry to 3D gaming". I'm sorry but someone somewhere in Sony HQ has been smoking the green stuff.

I remember them saying something along the lines of it being good for students @E3, Lol There's not many students I know with £500 lying round to spend on a 24" TV.

The worst thing is you can get an entry level 40"-50" 3D TV for that price now if you look around. Sorry Sony but this ones just ridiculous !
  • trubadman #31 9 months ago

£500 for an entry level 24! £100 more and I can add on 16" :(. Why do the Americans always get the right price, might just get one if I go there next summer with an iPad
  • HyperTails #32 9 months ago

I see this thing dropping in price rather quickly. Maybe then retailers like Amazon will be able to make it properly 'affordable'.

I firmly believe that 3D is the future, but they are juat making too many mistakes with it. As I said, ditch the glasses, have more TV channels go 3D, and make the technology affordable, and they'll have a winner.
  • Whitster #33 9 months ago

I only paid 700 for my 42" 3D TV and that came with eight sets of glasses and a 3D blu ray player!
  • Mayernator87 #34 9 months ago

But I've just splashed out on a nice 40" 2D tv from work at £250, (down from £500 with a special offer and 10% staff discount). The near £500 price tag seems a tad steep for it's size

Someone posted a link to a 32" LG Passive 3D tv earlier for £500.

    No thanks, Sony
  • peeps #36 9 months ago

No thanks, my 37 inch bravia might not do 3d but was much better value at £400. The US price is reasonable but the UK is being totally shafted on this one.
  • icematt12 #37 9 months ago

Any other roduct come to mind where the ratio of euro to £ is 1:1? No expert but sounds like they are taking the mick, possibly cheaper to import from France.
  • Drygore #38 9 months ago

Im getting one. Because i don't game in the livingroom anymore, got a small room ser up with my comp and all consoles, and currently using a 27" screen (which works great since i sit so close), this 24" is PERFECT if you're set up in à small room like i am. Also, 3D on 24" works great if you're close enough i.e: computer-distance.

I now have this image of legions of gamers sitting with patched together twin-left and twin-right glasses like Sawyer's reading glasses from Lost, in front of their LG FPR TVs.

I wonder how much support Sony'll get for SimulView all in all - seeing that developers will have to add this feature on a pr. game basis
  • Dave52 #42 9 months ago

I can see this selling quite well tbh...
  • Architect_z #43 9 months ago

    British Heart Foundation - £30 - 37" CRT. It's not 3D, but its £470 cheaper. ^_^
  • Caimbeul #44 9 months ago

At that price, make it 40" and you will have a competativluy priced product.

What needs to be remembered is that it still needs to be a good TV for SD and HD content AND have low input lag (something not very copmmon fo most TV's on the market at the moment). Some TV's these days (especially 3D ones, which is what they all seem to bloody be) are on average between 30 to 90 miliseconds for most LCD screens.
