Igarashi prepping Castlevania 3DS?

Handheld return rumoured for Konami vet.

Franchise old-hand Koji Igarashi is working on a new Castlevania title for the 3DS, if rumours are to be believed.

According to industry tipster Paul Gale's blog, Konami's artists and 3D modelers have already begun work on the game with the studio apparently aiming to make clever use of the handheld's 3D camera.

Igarashi's last effort, toothless multiplayer Xbox Live Arcade side-scroller Harmony of Despair was no match for Mercury Steam's excellent 3D debut Lords of Shadow, so a return to his favoured handheld hunting grounds seems like a sound move.

His last DS game, 2009's brilliant-but-brutal Order of Ecclesia, was one of the finest entries in the series since the 1997 PlayStation classic Symphony of the Night.

    I think Order of Ecclesia wasn't particularly harder than the rest of the handheld titles. I applaud the game for trying to do something new, with the more streamlined level design. I've only played half an hour of Harmony of Despair, which felt like a mess honestly. It obviously encourages you to play with other people instead of going solo, so I'll may give it another chance someday.

    A new handheld Castlevania is great news! Not taking anything a way from the LoS but it's such a different game that I was worried that the previous formula might be abandoned. Can't wait if the rumours are true.

    @JeroenZM

    I think it was harder, but after the first boss you already felt conditioned to the rest of the game.

    Order of Ecclesia was indeed harder.

    Do we already know what genre this game will be? I'd love to get another Metroidvania game.

    Pleeeease be the classic side-scrolling Castlevania we all know and love, and not this new hack 'n' slash shit.

    hmmm I don't like the new 3D Castlevania, much prefer the side scrolling sort - so hopefully keep it that way?

    Good news. Now the SotN nerds can stop bashing Lords of Shadow. Hopefully, both series can run simultaneously. I just hope this new side-scroller is as good and as of high quality as LOS.
