New Tomb Raider reveal imminent?

Magazine tease offers a sniff.

There might be a new Tomb Raider game on the way, if teaser artwork in the new issue of Game Informer has been deciphered correctly.

A two page spread in the latest issue, posted on NeoGaf, shows a shipwrecked vessel, the words "A survivor is born" and a reveal date of 6th December.

So, why might this point to a new Tomb Raider title? Well, you may remember back in July last year leaked information suggested that the next game in Eidos' long-running franchise would see Lara Croft shipwrecked on a mysterious island off the coast of Japan.

A website has also gone live bearing the words "A survivor is born".

The last 'traditional' game in the series, Tomb Raider: Underworld, came out in 2008 with Eurogamer's Ellie Gibson awarding it 7/10.

Then earlier this year we had the excellent top-down spin-off, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.

Eidos and parent company Square Enix haven't commented on the Game Informer image so you'll just have to wait until next month to find out what exactly is afoot.

Tomb raider reboot seems like a fashionable idea.
Either that or a Bear Grylls game

This could be a great Tomb Raider if it is - sort of like The Last Revelation, which in itself was probably the best of the old Tomb Raider games. Keep it localised, focused and get a real story building up...

I do like the new Lara look, and the baddies... okay, survival horror meets tomb raider... and I like survival horror. A lot. Damn you Lara, every bloody time I try to give you up...

In short - do want to see what is going on with this.

Erm... Guardian of Light was in THIS years Summer of Arcade EG!
  • Kami #4 2 years ago

Yeah, I did wonder about that myself... it's a Friday night and I kinda forgot we're still in 2010...
  • Kami #5 2 years ago

Let us hope so, because a good bit of fucking up could do Lara some good...

"Origin Story: This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the origin of Lara Croft's transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island's mysterious past."

I'd say that pretty much nails it.

I seen the ship and immediately thought 'Borealis? OMG Episode 3?!'.

    How foolish of me.

I Better hurry up and play Underworld then. This one does look amazing.

The setting certainly sounds interesting. I enjoyed Underworld but it could have been better. It just did not seem very consistent. Some areas were great while others needed more than just a bit of polish - and the last boss fight should have been dropped completely. Hopefully the next one comes with less ups and downs than the previous titles.

Please write a better story next time. Atlantean gods really does push the credibility of the series too far - the films managed a much better job of keeping it mystical but not utterly ridiculous.

I played Tomb Raider Legend about a year ago on my 360. It was a pretty good game, although the combat was a bit rubbish at times. I was very disappointed at the ending though. The last cut scene played out, and then the credits rolled, and I thought, "what the fu....?!" There was no resolution to the story. The plot was just left hanging. I've not played Underworld yet, but please tell me the story is resolved in Underworld. Legend's ending was one of the most unsatisfying game endings I can remember for some time.

EDIT: By the way, if anyone's into the art of the Tomb Raider games, there's a great two volume hardcover book set available from the following site: link

I want "hold walk button, walk to ledge, take one jump back, take one running jump."

Things haven't been the same ever since this was ditched for looser controls, I don't care how unrealistic a world system based around blocks is, it actually kinda worked in some abstract way.
  • citizenHUNTER #13 2 years ago

Oh, yeah and empty chasms full of atmosphere and feeling of walking in the midst of history is far superior to jumping around like an acrobat and shooting an ape, or some badly realised enemy human guy. Please, no more combat besides the occasional wild animal, thanks.

The japs have got lara and they gonna fuck her up big time?

What is there to fuck up? She already has huge tits and is essentially walking sex appeal with a posh British accent. Squeenix will feel like right at home with this franchise.

    @Sabreman64

Yeah it is well worth checking out Underworld if you enjoyed Legend. I can't really recall which I enjoyed more, but both were really good. Underworld leads on fairly directly from Legend so if you are looking for story resolution, that's where to find it. It's also worth checking out Anniversary if you haven't already, as it actually ties in loosely as well, and is a very nicely done remake of the original game.

Oh, and if you DO check out Underworld, grab the DLC levels, as they are probably the best levels that are in the game. Sadly you have to pay for 'em though :(

@zubnut: Bear Grylls couldn't survive alone in a supermarket, why would he be able to survive alone on a japanese island?
  • Lionheart #17 2 years ago

    Bear Grylls game! Brilliant :D

"The japs have got lara and they gonna fuck her up big time? "

Crystal have been doing that quite happily since they got the franchise.

So a new announcement is imminent? Meh...

I thought Underworld was an awesome game, personally. Easily an 8 if not a 9. But it's a given that combat in TR games is a total bore. If they'd take a page from Uncharted and incorporate a good cover-based shooter mechanic that'd be great. Or, alternately, do away with combat altogether. But as far as exploring/ climbing/ jumping/ puzzling, the TR franchise is hard to beat IMO.

They've already rebooted Tomb Raider - (or redesigned a new Lara) several times now. Really I thought Tomb Raider Anniversary and Legend (was it called?) before that were pretty decent - infact I love anniversary. I'm not saying a reboot is a bad idea, though - they just have to make sure they stick with something or we'll just be seeing another reboot in a couple more years. I think they just need to find a direction for Lara to go in that's fresh yet familiar that they can continue to evolve rather than having to start over again.
