PS3 to get 3D Blu-ray update soon

As soon as next month, in fact.

Sony has announced a release date for the firmware update which will enable PS3 to play 3D Blu-rays.

The announcement came during a conference at big old technology fair IFA, as attended by Engadget. According to Sony, the update will be released this October.

So what will you be able to watch in 3D? Well, Sony also unveiled 3D bundles of Alice in Wonderland (terrible) and Michael Jackson's This Is It (worth it for the bit where he tells someone off "with love").

An exact release date has yet to be announced. Still, good to know there's just a few weeks before we can peel those red and green sweet wrappers off our specs. And you can never have too many firmware updates.

    This Is It must be 'upscaled' 2D to 3D? It was mostly shot on handheld HD video. Sounds like a great 'system seller'.

    Are you sure about 'Alice In Wonderland? 3D" cause that's superb news for me, if true!

    Love that i'm getting a negative because i'm just saying my personal taste in films! Note the 'FOR ME' part?...grow the hell up!

    Indeed, Alice in Wonderland 3D was completely pointless.

    I found that the BluRay or Alice in wonderland was far more enjoyable when I left the house and sat in the garden with my eyes shut and my fingers in my ears.

    I wonder if this could have anything to do with the recent hack and the blu-ray mount point?

    2D to 3D conversions are the modern equivalent of colourization. They might look superficially 3D, but I really don't understand why anyone would choose to watch the bastardized version over the 2D version let alone pay the stupid premium that goes with it. Elements are just digitally enlarged and nudged around to give the superficial impression of 3D but they end up looking more like a cardboard diorama.

    3D films should be filmed / rendered in 3D, otherwise there's no point.

    So you've spent £2k on a 3D tele and you can finally watch 2 films on it. Early adopters must be thrilled.

    Cheapest 3d tv's are about 800 for a 40 inch and there's plenty of content available with loads of films being released by Christmas. Check play.com

    @#7 There is more coming, don't worry. It's just those two Sony will bundle with a PS3 if I read correctly. Should be arround 50 3D titles out by the end of the year, more coming in 2011 offcourse (like Avatar)

    @originaljohn
    That was very prescient of them when they announced this update back in July.

    Can't wait for this 3D phase to disappear. I'd rather TV manufacturer's work on computer monitor quality sets rather than waste time with ultra quick refresh rate TVs (which is about all that's different with 3D capable TVs). High definition TVs still look poor compared to the average computer monitor. Quality and proper high definition are more important to me than wearing glasses to watch movies or play games.
