Inside FIFA 18's Weekend League, the gruelling mode that's consuming players' lives

philreeduk

@witchdrash Or you could argue for some it becomes an addiction...

The problem is with game companies (and tech companies like google facebook etc.) they want to maximise the time you spend invested in their product, as the longer you are there the more likely you are to make them money.

Google "the attention economy" to see just how damaging this can be to us.

Introducing the Eurogamer Summer Internship

philreeduk

@Euphiletos An intern adds value to the organisation they work for and deserve to not only gain recognition for the work they do (this intern will get a byline) but also paid for it.

This internship allows someone who is passionate about writing to not only be paid for the work they do but also build their name and contacts within the industry. That is something which is unquantifiable, but is just as essential as being paid. Minimum wage for both the work and the opportunity is to me fair.

Not to side track too much, but a campaign I am involved with and seriously interested is within my own industry called the fair internship initiative. We work really hard to ensure that unpaid internships become a thing of the past in multilateral organisations, So I do understand where you are coming from. However, the real issue is not with minimum wage vs living wage it is paid vs unpaid. More information here https://fairinternshipinitiative.wordpress.com/2016/11/24/fii-speaking-at-the-un-forum-on-human-rights-democracy-and-the-rule-of-law/

The only way I got my break into that industry was through an internship that paid me the London living wage (so I do understand your arguments around the living wage!). However, compare that with what you earn in an apprenticeship (and the two are comparable) where you are paid Ł3.40 due to the non-waged opportunities, then you see that although this isn't the furthest step they could take, it is a good start!

philreeduk

@Euphiletos The norm for most internships is unpaid... EG could easily find someone to fill this role if it was offered as such, therefore, companies that do offer even the minimum wage deserve credit. It's a low bar, but it is still better than no money at all.

Mass Effect Andromeda is another failure for trans representation

philreeduk

Well done all the sites writers in coming into this comments section and defending the article and highlighting why this is a valid and interesting critique.

Along the lines of these individuals sticking their necks out in this comment section I want to say to anyone who will read this and particularly those who use terms like "SJW's" do you know what the concept of social justice actually entails? I know what it has come to represent on sites like this. But go back, read authors such as Thomas Paine, John Rawls and Thomas Pogge and try to understand that the term encompasses a wide array of discussions about equalisation and fairness within our societies for ALL.

Social Justice did not come into existence just because a site you read had an opinion you disagree with because of your beliefs. If you disagree with arguments like the one above, try and understand why you do! Read, find out more about why you disagree so you can engage in a discussion rather than just spewing bile and hate because someone disagrees with you.

@smallblueslime A straw man argument

"A straw man is a common form of argument and is an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not advanced by that opponent"

You said "UK wages stagnating coincides almost precisely with freedom of movement and a huge labour pool available from Europe, guess that's just a coincidence according to this author".

I refuted that by providing an actual coherent argument (which you haven't fyi) and now you are saying I am using a straw man argument? Learn what these "fancy words" mean before you use them....

philreeduk

@smallblueslime So insightful... we have had enough of experts blah blah blah.

The financial forecasts are for longer term predictions. We are seeing a rise in borrowing costs due to the effect of brexit, (look at the chancellors autumn statement this week). Again another great IFS paper on this issue which sets out the different effects brexit will have on UK finances.

https://www.ifs.org.uk/uploads/publications/comms/r116.pdf

But I am sure you won't even open this link until you have put your fingers in your ears and gone NANANA NOT LISTENING TO YOU right?
14 1

philreeduk

@smallblueslime Also wage stagnation is more tied up with the financial crisis/weak recovery (which was partially down to a restriction in aggregate demand due to public service cuts). than it is to do with immigration. Check any IFS study on the topic or read the report I linked to. This idea that immigrants are taking our jobs/services etc. are just baloney.

EDIT: Also how is your comment below this one not a strawman argument in itself? This IFS publication....THE IFS IS A POLITICAL ORGANISATION.
14 2

philreeduk

@smallblueslime I mean yeah I do. I am an economist by training.

This paper (http://cep.lse.ac.uk/pubs/download/pa015.pdf) is a review of the evidence of the impact of immigration (especially EU immigration). to quote from the paper;

"Empirical research on the labour market effects of immigration to the UK finds little overall adverse effects of immigration on wages and employment for the UK-born...

The less skilled are closer substitutes for immigrants than the more highly skilled. So any pressures from increased competition for jobs is more likely to be found among less skilled workers. But these effects are small (Manacorda et al, 2011; Dustmann et al, 2005, 2013; Nickell and Saleheen, 2008)."

This by the same LSE authors post Brexit (http://cep.lse.ac.uk/pubs/download/brexit05.pdf) states that;

"EU immigrants pay more in taxes than they take out in welfare and the use of public services. They therefore help reduce the budget deficit. Immigrants do not have a negative effect on local services such as crime, education, health, or social housing"

Next time you want to make pithy comments make sure the person you are talking to isn't a trained economist or one of those damn "experts" who you have heard enough from right?!?

CS:GO gambling sites can be "rigged" for YouTuber promotion, streamer reveals

philreeduk

@HappyGator There are very few "investigative" gaming journalists, most are entertainment reporters. The tag "gaming journalist" isn't all encompassing. People like Patrick Klepek and others who have had a background and experience in this type of reporting DO break stories like this. But the ones that people get angry over are more akin to E! reporters.

Its silly to expect something from every single person who writes about games as if they were a homogenous group as your comment seems to imply.

philreeduk

It's funny how a lot of gaming culture is so insistent on traditional gaming journalists having "journalistic standards", yet this stuff (usually) flies completely under the radar. I hope this shocks the people who usually comment this stuff into actually being more aware of just how shady the whole youtube/twitch streaming community is and how unaware we all are as to how rampant this is.

Editor's blog: I am sexist

philreeduk

A very brave article Tom!

My problem with the problems of sexism in video games/ the industry is that although it is a serious issue it is a symptom of a much larger problem within our society. There are parts of our world where women are still not allowed to complete basic education, or are mutilated all because of embedded customs and norms (and for those who think this doesn't happen in the UK please see this http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/feb/06/female-genital-mutilation-foreign-crime-common-uk).

So much attention is given to this issue yet they fail to address the real injustices that affect women globally, we need to not only address this issue in this industry but within societies at large. Articles like this are a step in the right direction.

The video game industry's gender wage gap is worse than you think

@anonDev I use statistics a lot for my line of work and have looked for the data sources these guys have used (they haven't released it). To me it sounds like they have not released them on purpose as they know any statistician would rip their methodology to shreds.

I would love to see proper analysis carried out on the games industry, my gut says it would be very similar to the trends discovered in the analysis of screenwriters (which can be viewed here http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/189696?uid=3738032&uid=2&uid=4&sid=21102093549817), until someone comes up with a good robust sample and uses good sampling techniques (not just the average!) we will not know.

What annoys me is sites like EG and other places linking to studies like this so they can gain the clicks from people who want to write silly comments. yes there is a problem with wage inequality in the games industry but what is even worse is the attitudes towards gender inequality, just look at these comments to see the vitriol in peoples responses, This is unique to games and i think the larger issue.

One thing that worries me about this report is sample size, 4% of female audio developers equates to how many precisely? There are also no controls for experience education etc, before taking any conclusions from such a survey the methodology has to be scrutinized (if anyone can find it please post it here), if they have not used basic statistical techniques it could make the results spurious.
