Watch: Seven things we learned playing No Man's Sky

Knock up a load of bypass chips using plutonium and iron and you can generate decent amounts of units to buy new inventory slots. Makes the first few hours or so far more engaging and reduces frustration.

No Man's Sky players meet in same spot, but can't see each other

nakedlunch

As much as I recognise that this is unfair and problematic for thone without Internet, a game like this appears to be almost continually in a state of improvement and refinement. It's worth remembering the size of the team in relation to its ambition. I'm sure Sean Murray will respond to these two people meeting up but I'd wait to see until they have the servers sorted etc after the initial burst of activity to determine what is happening with MP

I went back to this for the previous expansion and fell in love with it all over again. The sense of place and setting is superb. If you haven't played it yet, it is well worth picking up and the raft of patches have ironed out most of the issues too.

Digital Foundry's top ten picks for PlayStation Neo upgrades

@Badoink absolutely right, and not really up to the usually very high standard from Digital Foundry and Eurogamer. Surely, all games would benefit in some way, if developers patch games accordingly?

Says something about the remorseless logic of contemporary capitalism that this is somehow a cause for concern. 51 million phones in 3 months is insane and surely can't be the best way of using finite resources! Do people really need to upgrade at such a phenomenal rate?

Some of the upgrades in Dying Light were similarly ridiculous. Kicking heads was behind an XP unlock - seems rather straightforward to kick a head, if you ask me.

Broforce has performance issues on PS4

nakedlunch

Just to add what others have said - had a session on this last night with a friend. It's loads of fun, but during especially frenetic moments and explosions the frame rate is appalling. I normally have a reasonable tolerance for frame rate drops, but it seriously detracted from the enjoyment. It also adversely affects your ability to survive during tougher levels/bosses. I hope this can be sorted out as it is capable of being seriously entertaining.

Video: The Order 1886 - debating the issue of value

nakedlunch

I popped into Grainger Games and was asked, in an understandably half-hearted way, if I wanted to use some store credit towards purchasing The Order for £50. On an NQT salary, £50 is a lot of money and for that kind of cash I'd expect some replayability or length to the game. It doesn't help that the general critical consensus is that the game isn't exactly a masterpiece either.

It looks like they've added just enough to the gameplay to offer some further variety without changing anything fundamental. The first was magnificent and hugely enjoyable (as well as amazingly addictive) so I'll be happy to pick this up as soon as it's released.

I couldn't see in the comments that anyone had posted a link to this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPOA17K_iUw

It's far more measured and reasonable than a lot of the comments online about the 'downgrade' and manages to account (mostly) for the disparity between the 2012 video and the latest trailer with a little gameplay footage in it. Really, until the game itself comes out and Digital Foundry get their hands on it much of this discussion is based on some pretty flimsy evidence.

FIFA 14 on Vita is another reskin

nakedlunch

This is very shoddy, as I understand it PC gamers are in the same situation with FIFA 14 too. I understand some elements of the gameplay may need to be simplified for the Vita but this is not on - a lot of money for new kits etc.

State of Decay MMO follow-up Class4 still in negotiations with Microsoft

nakedlunch

This is great news for PC gamers - I've played a good few hours now and it's extremely engrossing. Though it has plenty of rough moments technically, all of which have been well documented, I don't feel they take much away from the experience. Adding in co-op (which I understand could be implemented in this game, not just the forthcoming MMO) would make it an even more compelling purchase.

@Der_tolle_Emil That's a good point and perhaps my original post was a little harsh. Apple are certainly no angels about this sort of thing and this could be looked at. Dead Space 3 dev: "change is always scary"

@BobbyDeNiro
Totally agree with this - her comment actually comes across as slightly patronising. It's hard to shake the impression of game designed by focus groups and a back-of-the-case tickbox mentality. I love co-op gaming but I really struggle to see how co-op in the DS universe could maintain any sense of isolation and terror whatsoever.

All well and good fixing this but how the career mode crashes made their way into the final game is disgraceful. Like many others, I enjoy career mode but the game freezes part way through 2014. Assassin's Creed retrospective

nakedlunch

Although I understand the comments about the first AC lacking in variety, at the time I felt it had a scope and ambition that marked it out as something special. There's a simple pleasure in slowly scaling a tower, to be rewarded with a sweeping shot of the city once you reach the top. Simply moving about in that world was enjoyable and I hope AC3 manages to keep that sense of freedom and fluidity.

"And please remember: online gaming is just entertainment. It's not a necessity for your life or happiness."

I think this is the crucial point to take away from the article, which is particularly sensitive and well written. Perhaps it's a little simplistic but I do think when people are engaging in such long gaming binges it has to be a symptom of something not right elsewhere in their life.

PS3 exclusive Journey Compilation spotted

nakedlunch

@Katman Because it seems strange to bother posting a comment on a story you find tedious. I understand these games aren't for everyone but I personally (and I think others would agree) found them interesting, new experiences and an antidote to the combat, action and boss battles that are such familiar gaming tropes. I'd also suggest that Journey was about more than walking too!

Why you can't mod Battlefield 3

nakedlunch

I saw the iCEnhancer stuff the other day, along with plenty of other mods for games which dramatically alter the look and gameplay in pretty profound ways, and I have plenty of faith in people to be able to get their heads around BF3. It does look like a commercial move but I think providing modding tools generates a lot of goodwill among the community.

Making a Better Fable III for PC

nakedlunch

I've played all three and would agree that the third is probably the weakest. It had some excellent, inventive missions but these would be followed by a generic fetch quest. The decision making as king was weaker than I had hoped, mainly because money felt so easy to come by. Fable 3 is still far more interesting and entertaining than the majority of xbox titles but suffers when compared to it's predecessors.

Just one more go...

nakedlunch

This reminds me of a truly appalling bit of TV where Ulrika Jonsson travelled to America for some quack to tell her she had a sex addiction. Surely, this is a similar confusion of symptom with cause? Someone who is unable to manage their time spent gaming, has tantrums when the internet cuts out or violent outbursts has far deeper problems which need addressing. Like most of the debate in this country, it's concerned far more with shock than it is with a more thorough analysis of the issues.
