Shadowhand, the solitaire RPG, finally has a release date

mrlaurentisdead

Love the shout-out to Pocket Card Jockey. That is a weird and wonderful game (as long as you've got the patience to endure those repetitive unskippable cutscenes before and after every race). Solitarica is wicked too!

This review claims that the game might be considered an 8/10, but also that it might be better than Spelunky.

These two things cannot both be true.

mrlaurentisdead

You're right, it's more of an early impression piece. Strange way of doing it, just stumbling upon a game and then creating an article for it.
How sad and awful that this would be considered strange, and that the existence of such a thing on this site causes confusion.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response was Rocksteady's pre-Batman crime crackdown

mrlaurentisdead

This game is very hard to play now because of its controls, which have aged very badly and aren't laid out in a sensible way (again, only by modern standards). At the time, I remember thinking it was the only good FPS on consoles, and I loved the level replayability and the insane bad guys.

Still got a lot of love for it, just don't want to ever play it again...

Alan Wake - The Signal

By showing how Alan could exist in multiple stories, worlds and realities, it demonstrated the potential of Alan Wake as a franchise after the original game failed to make that clear. There was a lot of imagination used in the story, the way it used its established characters and in the new gameplay mechanics, so it felt incredibly fresh.

It was as though Remedy finally understood their own game, even creating a fantastic boss battle to end it on, something omitted from the main game, possibly because they didn't know how to achieve that.

Finally, it combined dark horror with driving, during the farmyard scene where you have to drive between the generators in the pitch black whilst Taken claw at the car and possessed farm machinery flies through the air towards you, only giving you a fraction of a second to dodge them. It's a trope that's been in horror movies for years but no game has ever managed to capture the excitement, panic and tension before The Signal.

Crytek pulls websites after "suspicious activity" detected

mrlaurentisdead

The irony here is that Crytek don't know their own users' passwords. I am one of many who has never been able to login to their system because it won't recognise my password, even when I reset it or have them send it to me to confirm it's correct.

Oh well. Maybe the hackers can provide Crytek with the full list so they can fix this issue?

Crysis 3 multiplayer survival mode Hunter revealed

mrlaurentisdead

A mode very similar to that was in Crysis 2, but it was in the mix'n'match playlist along with a few other gamemodes so you couldn't choose to play it exclusively. It was good when it was played by people who understood it, but the vast majority of players had no idea how to play well without the nanosuit and subsequently it was one of the most commonly quit modes.

Final Fantasy 13-2 Sazh DLC release date, price details

mrlaurentisdead

@Munkeh111 Well, you could argue that it would be great if any DLC was included in the original game (apart from maybe that Metro 2033 one that totally broke it). The large character set never felt definitively part of the FF experience to me though.

Actually having two main characters only is a real boon to me in this game - a pet peeve of mine in JRPGs is having my party mixed up without my permission by plot-driven events. I want to control who I have at all times, and in FFXIII-2, that is exactly what I get.

mrlaurentisdead

Am very open to the idea of FFXIII-2 DLC, I think it's a brilliant game. Quite uninspired by playing as a different character and not keeping my crew from the main game though.

Rockstar hiring for "next-gen console" project

mrlaurentisdead

LA Noire 2 would excite me. A new IP would excite me if it sounded good. Any other R* sequel would be meh. Unless it was a return to the classic top-down GTA formula, though not sure that grab people's imagination as the most relevant use of 'next-gen' hardware.

Dead Island Ryder White DLC release date, price

mrlaurentisdead

Very silly of the person responsible to put that in the subheading. It doesn't take much. Most internet forum posters, let alone professional writers, are aware enough to think that if a character is not revealed as the villian until the end of the game to be extra careful with either spoiler alerts or saying nothing about it in the first place.

Video game rentals to eradicate pre-owned sales?

mrlaurentisdead

I normally rent a game a week. It kills it when publishers don't give you the online pass trial, like BF3. I got Need for Speed: The Run yesterday (perfect rental game cos you're done after 3 - 5 hours), and it comes with 2-days of 'Online Pass' trial, perfect for my needs.

When I got BF3 two weeks ago and couldn't even play the MP, it ruined it. I would've bought the game if I'd enjoyed it, but I'm not buying the game because of rumours that it's better than the beta. Rentals won't take off massively until renters have enough options to try everything.

Modern Warfare 3 day 1 shipments "largest in history"

mrlaurentisdead

@mcreddie "Takes alot less to kill someone in game, making it accessible for newcomers" - there is a flipside to this which tells the opposite story.

That's one of the biggest reasons why I never get into CoD or CodMeToo!s like BF3, Homefront, MoH, all the games, etc. I prefer the old-fashioned games where if sometime attacks you, you have a chance to defend yourself and fight back. Better stories are told that way IMO.

Not a criticism of the way the game plays - it does what it does, that's fine - but a personal preference of game style, and a big reason why a lot of new players get turned off.
