@Og
You're asking for the impossible, no one can be 100% sure of how the first replicators started all we can do is speculate. But speculate based on the evidence we have which is what that paper and many others do.

Science is a tentative process where what we 'know' today can be wrong tomorrow. If it's certainty you're after don't look to science.

Krebs cycle evolution

The reason why A level biology does not cover the evolution of the Krebs cycle is because it's really rather complicated and too much for anything less than undergraduate study. If you're interested the above link is a start on learning more about it but you'll probably need a bit more than A level biology to tackle it. Gould is a good place to start.

But to the thrust of your argument which as far as I can see is this:

I do not understand or can't imagine how X came about therefore God did it.

replace X with Big Bang, Krebs etc.

Now how is this any different to people many, many years ago who didn't know how the sun came up and assumed a supernatural power was responsible? It's no different, it's a God of the Gaps argument and thanks to people doing science the gaps are getting smaller.

To be clear this isn't an argument for the non existence of a God. It's an argument why lack of knowledge is not evidence of a God.

@neuroniky
Do you respect the opinions of everyone? Bin laden is seen as a prophet by many do you respect his opinions?

I don't think Catholics (or any religious people for that matter) are dumb but I do think that most have been hoodwinked. I am not a Catholic for exactly the same reason you are not a Muslim or, indeed, a Wiccan. When you understand why you're not a muslim or wiccan you'll understand why I am not a catholic.

To paraphrase a man whose name I have forgotten...

This a bit rich coming from the head of an organisation that involves ritualised cannibalism and whose flagship character and signature image is a semi naked bloke being tortured.

Ban this sick filth.

I have a favourite game and if you don't like it as much as me, or dare to say another game is as good or better, I'll scweam. I really will.

FFS.

Good review of a top game, if you like FPS's get it. Yes on a second playthrough it's not as 'clever' but if that's an issue for you play something else after completion instead, maybe that homoerotic 3rd person shooter everyone is ranting about?

Dead or Alive 4

To the fanboys (and girls too I suppose):

Look it's very simple - you're invited to comment on the article. If you disagree with the article can you please point out specifically what you disagree with?

Here I'll help start like this:

I don't agree with your criticism of 1 because in my experience of playing the game 2

replace 1 and 2 respectively.

This isn't tough. And you never know this may start an interesting conversation about the game.

I used to enjoy comment threads.

I didn't know that - I am googling now to have a look. Impressive.

Repton was good old fashioned gaming, one mistake and you're dead. Great fun.

If I remember correctly the exile advert had a number to ring after completion but I'm not sure what you won.

As an Electron owner this didn't bother me, I was very jealous of those rich kids with their BBC Micros.

I think that was a playground rumour along with the one about Louise Crocker being pregnant.

Now that's dedication - Repton always used to tempt me away from Elite after a few hours and my rating hadn't gone up. Impatience I suppose.

Cheers - I meant jumping to different galaxies my bad - I read about the button pressing 'fix' in Acorn user or somewhere but I never got it to work.

Time to connect it up to my TV again and carry on trying for 'Elite', I've been 'Deadly' for over 10 years now...

Off topic but did anyone ever get hyperspace jumps to work on Elite for the Electron?

I experienced those 50p meters too - electricity going off about two thirds of the way through Elite loading on an Acorn Electron was always a favourite. Youngsters of today moaning about loading times? Pah!

I agree as long as the screen and buttons are protected who cares what the case looks like?

Why haven't they included a battery add on like you get with most MiniDisc players? Would have been a nice to have.

How long until cheaper 3rd party headphone adaptors arrive? There is no justification for not adding a headphone socket except to get more money out of us. Yes I know you don't have to buy the damn thing but if you do you need a headphone connection.

Thanks for the info I'll do that.

I think tonight I'll return to my most recent mtw game, France only has Ille de France left and I have them surrounded, nothing better than the feeling after destroying another faction. Welsh longbowmen are great.

If the video isn't in-game it isn't very good is it? I mean I'm sure you'd be able to get a much better quality movie together as a trailer, it must be in-game and that is very exciting indeed. One of those games that I'll upgrade for I expect, especially with DoomIII soon too.

Love the game just superb but I do have a question - what chance of adding a bit of gritty realism?

By that I mean why isn't the underworld a bit more grubby and seedy like the Sopranos - drinking, smoking, crack whores etc

Nope this isn't some sad fantasy of mine honest, but it would add to the game in some ways but obviously cause your average Daily Mail readers to have an aneurysm. Which is another bonus.

Have you tried it? Until Halo I was PC only for my FPSes but gave Halo a go and it works, it really does.

I used Amazon as I just added it to a large order of books - according to the web site it was posted yesterday and should be with me today. I'm pleasantly surprised as I have TimeSplitters to try and complete over the weekend and didn't expect Amazon to be so prompt.

I went for the GC version as it's my favourite controller out of the 3 and I haven't been disappointed.

I'm more of a PC FPS fan, not really getting into a console FPS until Halo, and I'm finding the control very precise and natural. The sensitivity of the crosshairs, especially when zooming, took a bit of time to get used to but when it clicks it feels just right. Even the use of the Z trigger (in default set up) works well for me.

A quick question which may just be proving my stupidity but how can you tell which direction you're being shot from? Swearing at the screen didn't seem to help.

But it's still fun to play unlimited stamina games too, being unrealsitic can add to the gameplay.

martu

How can it be more realistic without jump? Surely that's something you might be doing irl if someone was shooting at you?

It don't think it's more realistic but do feel it adds to a different gameplay experience - Quake 3 tactics are pretty useless.
