2016: A year in review

crickson

I can't see how you can claim PSVR is a flop yet. They don't seem to be able to keep them on the shelves and units are still going with a big markup on the second-hand market. I tried it, and I really enjoyed it. Perhaps it is a novelty that will wear off. When I can actually flipping buy one I'll let you know.

The Eurogamer Gamescom day two podcast extravaganza

crickson

I've generally enjoyed the EG podcasts, especially the one-off shows focussing on a deep discussion of a particular game. I can find time to listen to the podcasts, even when I find it difficult to get the time to sit and watch the videos.

It'll be hard to find someone who can replicate the brevity and wit of Ellie Gibson though.

I think I remember reading the studio was in financial trouble after Remember Me. I'm very happy to see they've bounced back, as this looks like a really interesting game. Remember Me was one of my favourite games of the last gen, so looking forward to this.

Assassin's Creed 4 director wants to take the series to ancient Egypt

crickson

I had understood that the AC series aimed to take players to places and times they had not seen before in videogames. It seems this ambition has been dropped judging by that list. Personally I'd love to play a chapter of AC set duringthe French revolution. The events and characters would lend themselves well to the format.

Sony Xperia T review

crickson

Thanks for the info @vizzini but my SE Arc is an LT15i. No idea what the i means. Perhaps it means "ignored" because as far as I can tell Sony have not indicated when they will make ICS available on these handsets. The support available on the official forums has been awful and having bought SE handsets for almost the last ten years I think this'll be the last.

crickson

I've had a SE Arc for a year now. I'm broadly pleased with it, but for what problems I have had, Sony's support service has been absolutely useless. Also I am STILL waiting for the ICS update.

It's an iPhone for me next time, or Nokia if WP8 impresses.

Sony closes WipEout developer Sony Liverpool

crickson

This is a total shock to me. If you can make fantastic games like WO and be closed down - it's completely mad. If Sony had any sense they'd at the very least re-deploy the staff to other Sony studios. To make them redundant is madness.

Do we know for sure that this is the end for Wipeout?

EU PlayStation Store update 30th November

Space invaders extreme at last! I've been waiting ages to see that on the store. I loved the demo but never picked it up on UMD - it seemed like perfect 'quick hit' gaming, and swapping the disc around everytime I wanted a blast seemed like too much of a faf.

Ubisoft surveys public on future Assassin's Creed locations

crickson

There are already a zillion games set in feudal japan. The best thing about the AC series so far has been its commitment to setting games in locations and periods not seen in games before. I'm sorry not to see revolutionary France on the list, as I think it would be exciting and historically rich enough with interesting characters to weave a good plot. If they want to do London, then I think the 18th C would be more interesting than the victorian era - imagine the gadgets Newton could cook up in his alchemist lab!

crickson

I'm sorry to hear about the lower sales of R3 but pleased so many people are enjoying it. R3 is one of the best games I've played on the PS3 so far - a huge improvement on the last game. The single-player campaign is fantastic, the most atmospheric shooter I've played since Bioshock.

I hope they've tested it on East London/Thames Estuary accents for me and West Midlands accents for my gf, otherwise it wont see much use in my house!

Oh, and as far as 'moral issues' goes: people have every right to replace parts of their body with whatever the hell they want and anyone who doesn't like it can go F themselves. There, that's my considered moral opinion as a scientist.

crickson

It seems to me the big challenge still lies in the integration of the prosthetic with the body. These limbs are still worn on the outside and when they are reading the nerve impulses, generally do so by monitoring muscle movement beneath the skin. I used to be part of a research team studying biological/implant interfaces: http://tinyurl.com/3wgxkm6 In an ideal world you would connect these artificial arms and legs to the skeleton so that the forces generated by walking etc are transmitted through the bone and not the soft tissue. The limb would be permanently grafted so you'd have a socket of some sort protruding through the skin. Once in position, it could directly interface with the neural tissue like the retinal implants. Tricky problem is getting the body to see the implants as "self" and keeping bacterial away from the protrusion through the skin.

UK retail lists PS Vita at 230

crickson

@GrayFox2011: Well, yes - I do want the PSV as cheap as possible. I also massively object to Sony charging much more (and presumably making more profit) in some territories than others.
2 0

crickson

@callum9999 Then it *is* quite reasonable to claim that the PSV is over-priced in Europe. If I decide to pick one up at the end of the year I'll be doing some serious shopping around.
3 1

crickson

@callum9999 So Sony charge more in "high wage" territories simply because they think the market will bear it. And the relative strength of European currencies mean even more profit.

Understandable from a business point of view but hardly admirable.
3 1

crickson

@miseryguts 3G offers "(almost) always-on" internet connectivity. Actually, I find it really useful on my iPad but it's an open question as to whether it will offer something valuable on the PSV. And, of course, you have to pay for it...
0 0

crickson

@callum9999 The difference in 'the cost of living' is down to factors like taxation. Whether that's direct sales taxes, or indirect such as the price of fuel. As it happens, I lived in the US from 2008 to 2010. I currently work in Sweden and will be working in Paris by the end of the year. I didn't actually notice that food was significantly cheaper in US supermarkets (although restaurant food certainly can be).

There's no need to be sarky in your comment. I'm just trying to have a civil discussion.
3 1

crickson

@Goodfella & callum9999: No, I think there's a real disparity here. The difference in price is too large to be accounted for by factors like taxation differences. Possibly the higher tax rate on fuel and higher property prices reflected in higher shop rents play a role, but the difference in basic price in electronics between the US and Europe can be staggering, and the UK price seems to be slightly higher even than the EUR.

crickson

So that's 230 = 257. Looks like I'll be buying mine in unless I can get it for approx 220.
