Who needs games: PlayStation 4's first year

Xephon1970

Allow me to make a prediction - next week's X1 "report card" will tell us how much better it is now, how Microsoft have done a wonderful job turning it around and look all those exclusives.

The whole article made me doubt what I've been playing these last six months.

If memory serves, the PS2 had an equally barren first year, albeit without the same competition. I wouldn't write off year 2 just yet though. Competition is good and it'll force Sony to produce more of its first party titles. Something it's always been good at. Drive Club notwithstanding.

DriveClub review

Xephon1970

Blimey, another opinion, that differs from another opinion. What's the world coming to? This is from Digital Foundry by the way...

"...development of DriveClub is an on-going process, and we are promised a range of features in the coming months via post-launch updates. The first of these adds dynamic weather to the game, adding another layer of uncertainty to driving conditions while no doubt showcasing even more of Evolution's tech - something we'll take a look at in the near future. Photo and replay modes are also on their way.

It's fair to say that we had more fun with the game than Mike did in the Eurogamer review, but there are areas where we agree that the game falls a little short: the penalties and driving restrictions can sap the fun out of the most intense moments, and perhaps there is a lack of soul and charisma at the heart of the game. But for us, the combination of the arcade-style handling and the often beautiful visuals delivers an experience well worth checking out."

EA Access gives players access to triple-A games for $5 a month

Xephon1970

@querty23 I am right now, as I own neither an Xbox One nor a PS4.

However, choice is all well and good, but it's EA alone doing this. If it had all the publishers on board, on all the consoles, then we'd really be talking about choice. Right now, the only choice is EA, or not. That's not much of a choice.
2 1

Xephon1970

I'm curious...the people who managed to get Microsoft to reverse their DRM ideas from last year, they can't be the same people who are now on board with EA Access? Can they? Are you?

It's a publisher-limited version of PS Plus - only EA games, only EA discounts and no ownership of the games if your sub expires...which, let's remind ourselves, is another sub paid to MS to access this, you know, on top of the £40 you already pay to get online and use other features.

Am I missing something here?
7 3

Xephon1970

And nobody can see the downside to this, at all? Really?

So on top of the XBL Gold sub, I'd have to pay another £30 to access some of last years' games or have five days early access to games I'd probably be getting anyway. It makes sense if you're a big fan of the whole of EA's catalogue. Otherwise, I'd wait to see how this pans out.

I guess it cuts out the pre-owned section in stores, which would still work out to be the cheaper option for many, when you consider trades as well.

It's also pretty far from being "Netflix for games", be honest.

Dishonored's two-part The Knife of Dunwall/The Brigmore Witches.

I already adored the main game having played it three times and worked for every trophy to get the coveted Platinum before the appearance of the new content. But it was more than Trophies that kept me coming back. To date, I've played the main game five times and every time I've found, seen and heard something I hadn't seen previously.

The DLC gave me another reason to play the main game once more (the fifth occasion) before diving into Daud's story. He played so similarly but differently enough from Corvo to make this DLC fresh and engaging. His was a more brutal style, yet still able to assassinate with stealth when required. And yes, I've played both episodes more than once, not just for the Trophies, but to better understand the man behind the assassin's and why he did what he did. The cross-overs and set ups with Corvo's tale were subtle and beautifully handled, the dovetailing was rewarding for those of us who'd got so much from the original story's telling.

And while I know it's not perfect, it remains one of my favourite experiences of the previous generation. The art direction, the acting, story and gameplay were clearly all lovingly crafted and I remain hopeful of seeing a new story on the next-gen consoles.

Eurogamer's Games of the Generation: The top 50

Xephon1970

I've played 15 of those fifty games and only 4 in the top ten. Mario Galaxy wasn't one of them. Not really a massive surprise though.

So many of my favourite games of this generation didn't get a look in. Probably because they weren't "cool" or were on the wrong console. No Dishonored, Uncharted, inFamous, Rayman, Assassin's Creed, Deus Ex: HR, Killzone, Ni No Kuni, Pixeljunk Monsters...

Somewhere there's a Venn diagram with "Personal Opinion", "Quality" and "Popularity" waiting to be created. I'd say wait for the end-of-generation poll, but there's a chasm of difference between popular and what each of us thinks is good.

My own ten, in no particular order:
Dishonored
The Last of Us
Journey
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
BioShock Infinite
Uncharted 2
inFamous 2
Far Cry 3
Assassins' Creed II
Portal 2

Top indie:
Fez
Limbo
The Walking Dead
Dear Esther
Hotline Miami
Retro City Rampage
The Unfinished Swan
Machinarium
The Blinding of Issaac
Thirty Flights of Loving

Ask me again in a couple of weeks and all that might change...

Games of the Generation: Journey

Xephon1970

Should say, there's spoilers in this post for those who haven't played it...

After playing it a few times with random strangers, I finally met another player who's earned their white outfit as I had. We spent the whole game together, taking our time, wandering aimlessly and looking out for each other in times of trouble.

We reached the end together...and they drew a heart in the snow. I actually choked up.

Turns out, they were Japanese and while I'll never know them, they're still on my friends list to this day.

Along with Dishonored, one of my favourite games, not only of last year, but of this generation. Simply amazing.

Assassin's Creed 4 director wants to take the series to ancient Egypt

Xephon1970

"The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China
The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England
The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution
The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan"

Those four alone sound more interesting than III and IV put together. The locations and time periods are perfect for this kind of game, but the fact they went for a prequel of sorts to III smacks of playing it safe. I hope I'm wrong about IV, but I can't wait to get away from this Kenway saga.

Isn't it odd that for the past 6 or so years, Eurogamer (along with a lot of other gaming sites) have been accused of bias towards Microsoft and the 360 and hating on Sony and the PS3?

Now that Sony have turned things around and are firing on all cylinders, the press are blamed for reporting positively on it and pointing out Microsoft's mistakes and frailties. The bias is in in your own minds, if you want blind, positive reporting on the Xbox One and Microsoft, I'd suggest you stick to the Official Xbox Magazine site. It's blinkered reports are actually amazing.

After Xbox One U-turn pre-owned is back on the table - but at what cost?

Xephon1970

Publishers need retail to sell their wares. But retail makes virtually no money from selling new games and consoles. Why? Because the industry got greedy. So retail turned to used sales as a way of making money, on both games and consoles.

Ever wondered why when you're making a purchase in GAME/wherever, they have a roll call of questions? Why they try to sell you a used copy over a new one? Why when you're buying a console they'll try to sell you as many accessories as possible and in-store insurance? Because it's the only way for them to make money from their sales - otherwise they would make nothing. And whose fault is that? Yup, the industry, it wants all the money for itself...but it needs retail to sell its wares...and so we go round and round...
