@jiveguy: Well, if it doesn't, expect a lawsuit. Hero Games (makers of Champions) threatened Marvel with one when Marvel announced a comic called 'The Champions'.

According to Hero's website, there's an announcement from them due this weekend at some RPG con. Bet you a fiver it's this.

New "City of" games coming?

WriterUK

I think expansions and sequels is what he's talking about here... not 'City of Generic Fantasy Tediousness' or whatever you might prefer.

And 'City of Shadows' is never going to happen, because CCP and White Wolf are now one entity.

Halo 3

WriterUK

Really enjoyed Halo, except for the protracted 'let's play the same maps in reverse' stuff near the end.

Didn't much like Halo 2, especially the 'play the enemy' stuff, despite really wanting to.

Technically I hope Halo 3 will surprise us all - the multiplayer camera recording stuff sounds great, for example - but I'm not 100 percent convinced Bungie can actually make a flawless single player experience. On the basis of the last two Halos there were definite issues with each....

E3: Peter Moore

WriterUK

Very, very good interview. Well done on that extended grilling over the Japanese market. I don't think it's vital to the 360's overall success, but it's good to take people to task when they fail to accomplish something... just to see how they squirm, if nothing else.

Moore's doing a good job on the PR, in my eyes. Better than Tretton and Reggie, for damn sure.

E3: NCsoft making PSN games

WriterUK

Just to clear a couple of things up.

@ SeesThroughAll: Microsoft are publishing the PC/360 'Marvel Universe' MMO, being developed by Cryptic Studios (who developed City of Heroes/Villains). NCsoft isn't involved at all. And the licence allows Cryptic to include any Marvel characters they want, AFAIK.

@spliffhead: NCsoft doesn't have the LEGO licence - NetDevil does, as a developer. They're developing their LEGO Universe MMO directly for LEGO. NCsoft published NetDevil's last game, Auto Assault.

So in both cases developers who once worked for NCsoft are doing their thing for another publisher. Just FYI.

Avalanche (the devs) did Tak and the Power of Juju, which was a nice little underrated platformer. So this isn't that surprising. Give licences to good developers, let them work a bit of magic... et voila.

Fun fact: Avalanche are based in Salt Lake City, Utah, where you cannot walk into a bar and just buy a drink... you have to be a member (Damn Mormons!).

Football Manager Live

WriterUK

First off - huge kudos to Miles for posting in this thread. More devs should take the plunge and do likewise.

Second off, while I potentially have the eyes of Mr Jacobson, I just wanted to ask something a bit off topic to you: has SI ever thought of doing sim games in areas outside sports? (I know I know, your company name sort of suggests that's a no.) I only ask because I'd give my right leg (or left, take your pick) for a Hollywood business sim created by craftsmen such as yourself. :)

With that, I leave the rest of you to debate things like football which I barely understand... ;)

War Rock

WriterUK

As I understand it in the original Korean (I believe) incarnation of War Rock the entire game was free to play... but you had to buy items using micro payments. So there was still money involved but only if y'know, you wanted to win occasionally.

I would guess while bringing it to the West the publishers have decided that Western gamers aren't interested in/used to the concept of micropay-to-play, so went with a more familiar subs model instead.

Unfortunately that's a lot easier to measure against the free-to-play model of games like BF2. :)

Guild Wars: Nightfall

WriterUK

Lemonfist: Indeed, because I'm sure the original Guild Wars and Factions were worth, ooooh, say 7/10 and 6/10 respectively...

Brem: Look forward to reading it mate - can you tell us, in print or online?
0 0

WriterUK

Brem: Oh, I realise that opinions vary. I was just hoping to hear your opinion on this particular title as you've reviewed the previous two. If I was commissioning the review I know I'd seek out the reviewer who'd gained most experience with the series....

Don't get me wrong - Jim's a smart guy, great reviewer, but in this case I think his obvious dislike of the GW series (each to their own!) and a couple of factual errors dragged the score down. Let's face it: a 7/10 on here knocks a 'must purchase' game into 'probably not worth bothering' territory.

Besides, Nightfall is much better than NWN2 and you gave that an 8. I guess that's where you were instead of reviewing this. ;)

"It's easily the best expansion so far"

Er, but EG gave Guild Wars Factions - the previous standalone game in the series - 8/10.

That makes sense then.
