There's FIFA 18 - and there's EA Sports FIFA on the Nintendo Switch

WiseNail

I read somewhere (but not sure if it's 100% true), that part of EA's contract with FIFA specifies they must release at least one edition of the game on each major console. This sounds like it's going to end up like the Vita version, which was OK but disappointing compared to the main console versions.

Nintendo confirms Switch launch lineup of games

WiseNail

I used to be a big fan of Nintendo, but lost interest with the Wii and didn't bother with the Wii U as my enthusiasm had gone. However, the early Switch videos really got me interested again, and I was seriously considering getting one. Unfortunately the last 24 hours have been a massive disappointment on almost every level, and I can't see me picking one up now (in 2017 at least).

Love to replay the first half of Halo Combat Evolved where you're fighting a guerrilla action against the Covenant, but as a Far Cry style open world shooter on the Halo ring. Taking down Covenant held outposts, doing assassination missions etc a part of a team of ODST's.

Ubisoft, talk to MS and make it happen.

Destiny: The Dark Below review

"introducing several new story missions".

For those considering a purchase, several means three and one of those can only be played the once.

Purchased the season pass for this, and not particularly impressed for the cost. While I did quite enjoy the main game, I won't be purchasing DLC when Destiny 2 puts in an appearance unless Bungie really up their game.

Civilian massacring game Hatred courts controversy, gets it

WiseNail

Happy to admit that I've shot plenty of zombies, terrorists and aliens in my time, and had great fun doing it. However I think this game looks awful; if close ups of defenceless civilians having their heads blown away is deemed to be a good gaming experience, then I'm obviously out of step with where gaming is heading.

Microsoft to take its time with Xbox One Gears of War

WiseNail

Enjoyed 1 to 3 but Judgement felt like a rushed to market cash in, which might have been better placed as a Xbone launch title if it had a bit more development time.

Not sure where they go with the franchise as the story was pretty much over. It would probably need to be a prequel or set way in the future.

WiseNail

Graphics bit disappointing but would have got this if it was out on the PS4, as looks good fun and the release schedule is a bit barren at the moment. Know I won't lay out £500 to play it on the One though, but may get the 360 version if the quality is there.

Loved Left 4 Dead and really looking forward to this. This is what I was hoping for with the next gen, some fresh ideas and new IPs. WiseNail

I've been wondering if the reason the 360 version has not been shown is that it's pretty simiłar to the Xbone version. The two week delay could be MS hoping to encourage sales of the One, whereas if they launched at the same time people might just go with the 360 version and not buy a new console.

I guess we'll know soon enough.

In Theory: Can Microsoft produce a new, cut-price Xbox One?

WiseNail

All I really want is a games machine, everything else is secondary. The plain fact is that PS4 does this better at a cheaper price.

If MS can get some great exclusives then I'll buy a One (same reason I bought a PS3 last gen), but I've got to feel I'm really missing out to spend £429.

Kinect seems pointless to me at the moment, and it's up to MS to produce the games that prove me wrong, something they've failed to do so far last gen and this.

Epic sells Gears of War to Microsoft

WiseNail

Loved Gears 1,2 and 3 but Judgement was a disappointment. It felt like some of the management changes at Epic Games (new owners, Belinski and Ferguson moving on etc), left Judgement seeming a bit tired and more of a franchise milking cash in than anything else (armour skins etc).

Microsoft bringing it in house and passing it to a new developer may be good news, if they're serious enough about the franchise.

I've moved on to PS4 at the moment, but this plus a new Halo could persuade me to pick up a ONE as well if the quality is there.

@kassmageant couldn't agree more.

MS seem desperate to lock everyone in to the console like iTunes. Although I own a PS3, most of my gaming this gen has been 360, and I probably would have picked up an Xbox One no problem if they had avoided all this extra crap. There's no way I'd pick one up now, although I can see it flopping and an almighty price cut and climb down within 12 months of launch, by which time it may be too late.

Gears of War: Judgment Warzone mode found on the disc, and it's playable

WiseNail

@Big-Boss

I hated the changes made to Halo 4 (removal of Firefight, short campaign, poor split screen so crap couch co-op, more COD type multiplay etc), and all the signals suggested that Gears was going the same way. However, I picked this up against my better Judgement (lol) following mostly positive reviews, but you’re right it really does have an expansion pack feel to it. Still a good game, but worth closer to £20 than £40.
9 0

WiseNail

I like this game but it feels like a step down from Gears 3. Where are the multiplayer maps (the HDD install size suggests you had disc room for more), where are two thirds of the Gears universe multiplayer characters (perhaps cut to save voice over fees)?

Don’t even talk about no Locust in the main multiplayer modes plus the baffling removal of Horde. I can’t help feeling that half of the multiplayer portion of the game has been removed to sell as future DLC. That and I can’t go more than five minutes in the campaign without a stats screen popping up.

Gears and Halo are Microsoft’s two biggest exclusives, but the decisions to milk them for all their worth and CODify the multiplayer on both, are slowly destroying the biggest reasons to pick up the next Xbox rather than a PS4.

North American Wii U sales show dismal start to 2013

WiseNail

@redcrayon.

I never implied that gaming was a finite thing, and obviously new gamers are 'growing' into the hobby.

I've spent numerous hours playing games with my 15 year old son and 13 year old daughter over the years, but Little Big Planet, Minecraft and Viva Pinata had more appeal to them. They also liked the Lego games, but played them on the 360. Sure that means that they like gaming, but are unlikely to want a Nintendo machine. I doubt I'd be able to find one of my sons mates who would prefer a Wii U over either a PS4, next Xbox or gaming PC.

My daughter did like the Lion King mind you... :)

WiseNail

To me personally it's a bit more than just the lack of games putting me off the Wii U. I've always owned Nintendo consoles back to the SNES, but I really disliked the original Wii and hardly used the thing. As a result I've found that my gaming tastes have moved on to other things (Skyrim, Unchartered, The Witcher, Gears of War etc), and even if a new Mario, Zelda and Metroid were available right now, I no longer care anywhere near as much as I once did.

I'm sure they'll be great games, but my tastes have changed (I didn't bother with Skyward Sword for example) and I can't really see Nintendo enticing me back anytime soon.

Again that's only a personal opinion, but I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of Nintendo fans have just moved on to something else.

Halo 4: Spartan Ops Season 1 review

WiseNail

Highly likely that we'll see a (paid for) Spartan Ops Season 2, as I think Microsoft's aim is to make this something 'approaching' Bungie's Destinty game. However, while Season 1 had some stand out Halo type moments, there was far too much padding and switch pushing in place to make a Season 2 an essential purchase.

Wish they'd bring back Firefight to be honest. The loss of this, and Horde Mode in Gears of War: Judgement is a sad day for those who prefer co-op to competitive multiplay.

On the Xbox doesn't clearing the hard drive system cache remove all patches? Therefore you could just:

1. Play online to chapter 8.

2. Clear your system cache to delete the patch.

3. Play offline solo to exploit the glitch as much as wanted and save your game.

4. Go back to the dashboard, redownload the patch and play online again.

5. Tell the greedy EA to go fuck themselves.

Halo 4's Spartan Ops campaign will resume in January

WiseNail

A fan of all things co-op in Halo games, but find Spartan Ops a bit boring tbh. Can't help feeling it's being done to stop disc trade ins plus sell us the inevitable season 2. No split screen plus the need for live gold takes away from it's supposed co-op nature, and the awful writing and acting really drags the story down. Who knew spartan 4s were such a load of douch bags. Nice movie clips at the start though...

Nintendo on Wii U hopes, fears and why hardcore fans are its secret weapon

WiseNail

“Wii proved it's not all about power, that it's down to the games people want to play”.

Unfortunately Nintendo, after 20 years of the same thing (on both home console and handheld), I don’t want to play another version of Mario, Zelda or Mario Kart.

Sure the other consoles have a ton of sequels as well, but they’re balanced by many more new experiences such as Left 4 Dead, Dishonored, LA Noire, Portal and Dark Souls.

Any machine you produce always ends up as primarily a first party console, and I see nothing different in the offing this time.

Thanks for the memories, but no thanks to Wii U.

Bit of a worrying time for the future of gaming. It's been my hobby for 20 years, and I've purchased all the major machines in that time, but I just don't know what the next couple of years will bring.

The Wii turned me away from Nintendo, and the Wii U doesn't look like bringing me back. Sony seem hampered by a lack of money, lack of vision and internal politics, and are making me feel that my Vita purchase may turn out to be a mistake.

All I'm left with is Microsoft, who seem more interested in selling me movies than games, and are clearly driven by the desire to drain every penny from my pockets rather than any real love of gaming.

God forbid that Apple decide to come into the market...

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 review

WiseNail

Picked this up in the £25 Tesco deal, so I'm pleased that the (more respected) sites such Eurogamer and Edge have given this a decent review.

People seems to get too worked up about COD, sure it won't set the world alight but there's sometimes also value in knowing roughly what you're going to get. A takeaway can be just as enjoyable as a fancy restaurant meal, if you're in the right mood.

At least you get plenty for your money with things such as split screen, bots, branching campaign, multiplayer leagues, co-op zombie modes catering for most tastes, and proving just how far rival games such as Medal of Honor have to go to compete.

Digital Foundry vs. Halo 4

WiseNail

It does look nice, but split screen campaign has paid the price with nearly a third of the screen lost to vertical bars.

It's not a technical issue, but I also don't like the fact that you need Xbox Live Gold in order to play the Spartan Ops Co-op campaign (even solo); seems a bit sneaky on Microsofts part. Not that the servers stayed up long enough yesterday to play it much anyway...
