Ubisoft's unreleased, finished Wii U game revealed

I think a few people will be revisiting their comments from when this story came out. This was clearly not a miss for Nintendo, and yet this was ammo in another round of Nintendo is dead bollocks.

How Nintendo is reinventing the shooter with Splatoon

TonyHarrison

@ShiftyGeezer why does a secondary console have to play all the same games as your primary console? Wouldn't you just play everything on the primary console in that instance, thus negating the need for a secondary console?

Them being different is a reason to buy it, them being identical isn't.

Editor's blog: I am sexist

TonyHarrison

Social justice in 2014 isn't about healthcare or anything like that.

It's about how looking at someone is rape (thus leading to the need for a popular feminist website to have a "rape rape" tag for those actual instances of rape), or pointing out that the film 'Frozen', set in Norway in the 1800s or so, is an example of Disney whitewashing, because 1800ish Norway was full of proud PoC...

You can't just dismiss historical accuracy either. If you set out to tell the story of a specific set of people from a specific time, you shouldn't be changing it so as not to offend a special little snowflake on tumblr. History is a pretty violent thing, whitewashing it's worst examples away in a pursuit of modern equality takes away the ability to learn from it's mistakes.

These are the platforms you can play FIFA 15 on

TonyHarrison

Everyone is forgetting that EA did in fact release a Fifa game on the Wii U at launch, and guess what, it was basically a legacy version as well. So there's no concerns with regards to porting an engine to work on the console because they've already done it.

So really they can't even be arsed to promote a legacy version despite the Wii U having stronger current software sales than two of the consoles that do get graced with one.

"See those mountains?"

TonyHarrison

The problems described here aren't inherent within open world games. They're problems with individual developers who have the scale and ambition to imagine a large open space to play with, but don't have the ability to fill it in new and unique ways. Hence ubisoft using the same mechanics in all of their games.

You look at developers like Rockstar with GTA or Red Dead Redemption, or Rocksteady with the semi open world Arkham City and you see beautifully crafted worlds with a wealth of things to do.

Nintendo are in that same class. When they go big they have the talent to back it up, which is why I'm not at all worried about how they handle a huge open world in Zelda.

PS4 is doing great - but it's a different story for Sony

TonyHarrison

These 'short term' losses have basically been happening since the PS3 launched. In 2006.

That is not short term, and it hasn't been for a while.

Microsoft make billions so they're OK despite 'low' sales, and the losses that Nintendo have made in the last few years are a drop in the ocean compared to Sony's. Funny how those are the ones made a big deal of though.

Don't be surprised that just 2.2% of F2P players spend money

TonyHarrison

Take a look at the type of F2P games that are massively popular on any app store and you'll find games that do try and force you to spend ridiculous amounts of money, thus leaving you with this 2.2%. It's kind of pathetic that these companies can thrive with such a small paying customer base.

This guy just comes across as if he's sticking his fingers in his ears going 'la la la I'm not listening'.

Google Chromecast launches in the UK today, priced Ł30

TonyHarrison

Had one of these for a week in December. It worked for the first two days and then the problems started. The connection between my Nexus 4 and the Chromecast would drop constantly, at which point whatever it was I was trying to stream would eventually stop as well. Alarm bells started going there as there's no way the Nexus 4 should have an issue with Chromecast. Then it somehow started blocking the wifi connection in the house, with nothing being able to connect to the internet even if you weren't even using the chromecast. After that, it was returned.

It's a great idea but it's definitely one of those situations where I was essentially paying to be a beta tester. I only hope for those who buy one now that the kinks have all gone.

PS4 sales do the business for Sony

TonyHarrison

All of the losses Nintendo have made in the last 2-3 years combined would be less than this projected $1.1billion Sony are going to lose this year (it will probably be even worse given their previous accuracy).

Then of course, you have them losing billions upon billions more in that same timespan.

I await the 'Hirai is not Sony's problem, it's Yoshida' opinion piece which is clearly long over due.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate heading to Europe in early 2015

TonyHarrison

It doesn't go to Vita because it doesn't have the userbase in Japan to be a big hit, and Sony never cared about trying to build the brand in the west, whilst Nintendo help out with publishing and marketing costs in the west.

Basically Monster Hunter exists in opposite world where Nintendo are the best option and Sony's lack of third party relations costs fans.

Watch Dogs delayed until spring 2014

TonyHarrison

This is a big budget cross gen game, with the money being spent the most on the PS4 and X1 versions. Even if both of those consoles come flying out of the gate, they'll have at most 3million users each by the end of the year. That is not the environment to be making back your money.

So I think they're running scared of low numbers, kind of like they did when they took rayman away from the Wii U launch last year. And by doing that they weaken the line up and potentially cause the lower sales they're worried about in the first place.

Yet as I said, nobody mentioned it, aside from all the players who took no time at all to find them.

@Gedeye I've seen comparisons elsewhere between this and Trine, and I'd go along with that.

Trine was tighter than LBP, but still floaty in comparison to a truly perfectly tight platformer.

Then again, a lot of people only experience the floaty kind, so less floaty would equal tight to them.

As for the F2P debate, just take a look at the highest grossing apps charts on iOS or Google Play every so often. So with three 'big' brand FPS franchises out and delivering anything between awful and decent experiences (so nothing spectacular), and with Vita sales still struggling, I'm thinking it wasn't the best idea to make such a big deal about FPS on the go with this thing.
