Cities Skylines' next expansion lets you build your own theme parks, zoos, and more

Nuronv

@JensWeissflog Paradox set the standard in terms of product lifetime support that other developers should strive for. Rather than churn out sequals every other year support games people have bought and love, this also allows them to make money without having to start from scratch every few years.
As they also regularly roll parts of the expansions in to the game when they get released it also draws people back. Its win-win.

@Calib4n @Binba442

This is the other point, the LoL and DOTA2 communities perpetuate that its a dumbed-down baby game. It may be a more simplified but that doesn't mean the skill ceiling is lower.

Its more focused on PvP team fights and removes some of the weird hangups that DoTA inherited from the Warcraft 3 engine like last hits, individual character levels and items. Its just "Different" in a lot of ways, things that define what MOBAs are to a lot of people.

Timing is important with any game that relies on a large player base. Unfortunately Heroes of the Storm came out after LoL and DOTA2 had already hit critical mass. I've seen plenty of people start playing it and really enjoy it but if you already have a MOBA you love and are invested in (emotionally and financially) why would you change?

Microsoft creative director dismisses "drama" around always-online consoles

Nuronv

@djronz. It has never been confirmed that it needs to be online.

This is quoted from the SDK which caused all of the hub-bub in the first place.

"Durango will implement different power states so that it can always be powered on, but will draw minimal electricity when not in use"

"he console will be ready instantly when users want to play, and will always maintain a network connection so that console software and games are always current. With this ďAlways On, Always ConnectedĒ design, users will quickly and easily enjoy their connected entertainment experiences, with no waiting for the console to restart or install games"

It doesn't say anywhere that it is required

I wish people would stop saying "Always On" means "Always Connected DRM" , its like the internet has had a collective reading comprehension problem.

It means it is "Always On" so that it can pull updates, receive messages and have background services running. In the same way that your smart phone runs in low power mode but still receives messages, email and calls when you aren't actively using it.

The PS4 has exactly the same functionality but they didn't use the words "always on". When it is running in standby it will still be on so that you can connect to it using your Vita etc.

Age of Empires Online now entirely free-to-play

Nuronv

Exactly what they should have done in the first place. Too late for me I'm afraid. I Blogged the following during beta just before they slammed the restrictions in to it.

Age of Empire itself is free to play, all of the basic content is there for you to play without spending a penny. You could happily play the game like this and never get bothered by someone trying to sell you things. You can however spend money and buy extra civilisations and bonus units. This model seems to be channelling the spirit of Shareware. You get a good full chapter of the game for free which everyone can try, if you like it you buy more content. This is exactly how the Free-to-play premium model should be done. I hope Robot Entertainment and Gas Powered games the best of luck with this project as it deserves to do well.

And then this afterwards
Age of Empire Online finally emerged in to the wild, boy have they hacked up the free version.

A most of the payment structure which I talked about in my last Age of Empireís post is now wrong. Gas Powered games, what the hell are you guys doing there? You canít play for 5 minutes without being reminded that you are on the crippled version. You guys seem to have made the best attempt possible to butcher the game up to limit the free to play players. You canít even equip most of the drops you get it chests.

Next little annoyance I found with it was that you could only buy items from the shop using MS Points. Points which you can only buy in bulk. Bulk which is larger that a Premium Civilisation but not large enough for you to actually buy anything else with. Iíve never really had a problem with Games for Windows Live before but you guys really are a crafty bunch of jackals.

I was really hoping the AOE:O was going to be the return to form of the RTS genre. The game itself is solid, classic RTS with a spattering of RPG and gear elements. If you are willing to pay for a premium civilisation it is still well worth playing but donít fool yourself in to thinking this is free. Itís a demo that unlocks when you feed it money.

Sony Ericsson: No need for Xperia Play 2

Nuronv

I was looking for a new phone when this came out. Even on launch day the specs were behind the times, the only thing this device has going for it is the control pad.

"When you go into things like dual core versus single core, what a lot of people don't understand or appreciate is the actual benchmarking and the ability of a device to do what they do, dual core doesn't mean it's faster"
This is very true....if the parts weren't standard industry parts that are clearly not at the cutting edge any more. This isn't an exotic device with a never seen before design. Its a standard phone with a slide out joypad.

"This is PlayStation Certified, and it's been proven by all of the discussions of a very technical nature we're having with publishers"
They have talked about it and its so awesome they put their name on it!

I bought mine at the weekend. The hardware itself is up to Nintendo's usual standards and I've quite happy with it. However I can see exactly why Nintendo are having problems with it and there seems to be exactly the same feelings here. Where are the games, i mean like anything, please!

I know all consoles have fairly dry periods at launch but this is ridiculous. Even the eShop seems empty. It was summed up for me when i was looking at 3DS game trailers on it and noticed that half of them weren't even in 3D. Half Arsed Launch

Mortal Kombat has online pass - report

Nuronv

@midnight_walker
I can see where you are coming from. I thought it would be a good time to start a rental account, it would also be the first time I've actually rented a game in years. I've cancelled the rental, I've cancelled my rental account.
I would normally buy a new £40 game every month however WB games won't have any of my money and nither will any one else who keeps up with this Online Pass bullshit. Its not causing any additional load on their servers, its just plain money grabbing.
I'm expecting someone will say "If you buy it new you don't have to buy the pass, so whats the problem?". Its the principle thats the problem. Also what happens if i go to sell it a year down the line, I get less money for it as the new owner has to splash out another chunk on top of what they pay me.
